Thoughts on the Bb Pilipinas 2014 National Costumes – Contestants #36 to #40

I was so very happy to hear that this year’s Bb. Pilipinas Fashion Show at the Araneta Coliseum (March 6, 2014) was going to incorporate the National Costume competition. What a great idea from Team Binibini! I was eager to see the girls parade in Filipiniana of all kinds and dying to see the designs. This is not just about the girls, but about the beauty and significance of their costumes.

My major irritation though is that they failed to mention the designers of these beautiful creations! What would it have cost to include their names somehow during the program? Even to flash the designer’s names on screen would have been enough. What an oversight, in my humble opinion!

Nevertheless, I loved almost all the gowns and costumes and appreciated each one. In this series of blog posts, I’ll go through each costume and share my thoughts… those highlighted in RED are the gowns and girls that impressed me!

36. Krystal Alonday

36. Krystal Alonday

When Krystal Alonday, a paper napkin collector, stepped out onto the stage, she executed a clockwork turn reminding me of the pretty little doll figurines you find in musical boxes. She also made me think of those sweet little ceramic brides you find on top of wedding cakes. With Krystals hair simply styled and down to one side, she also looked like she was celebrating her debut again!

37. Vanessa Saliba

37. Vanessa Saliba

I still am not sure if I liked this spiky gown that was made of walis tambo and tingting. At least I think it was made of those two native products. Anyway, one thing is for sure is that it was one of the more eye-catching gowns of the evening. The down-side was that Vanessa Saliba looked stiff in it – but not her fault. You can’t swagger like Jagger when you’re wrapped in tinder.

*****

38. Janine Asanion

38. Janine Asanion

An earthy Singkil costume featuring the boteh design of Persia which we know as paisley. Best feature of this costume is the color combination of pink and gold which made Janine Asanion, a registered nurse, stand out even when the rest of the girls came in to form their final tableau.

*****

39. Ladylyn Riva

39. Ladylyn Riva

How could this ensemble be considered a National Costume? That was my question when Ladylyn Riva made her entrance in this sexy gold catsuit with Neptune-like shoulder wings. Maybe its a variation on the Terno? Or perhaps she is representing Lidagat, the Visayan goddess of the sea! Or Luyong Baybay, the goddess of the tides! Whatever she was representing, Ladylyn was ravishing and even had a dramatic moment when she disconnected the golden train from her outfit. A stand-out design!

*****

40. Vessica Sambo

40. Vessica Sambo

Last but not the least came I.T. student Vessica Sambo in a tattered Terno. She was bright-eyed and bushy-tailed as she negotiated the stage, confirming to the audience that she is indeed one of the prettiest newbies in Bb. Batch 2014! This gown would be perfect for a shoot on the beach… I can almost see a bare-foot Vessica looking hot and thirsty draped on a rock next to the brilliant sea while wearing this red hot number…

An Honest Critique on My Favorite Web Interviews in Bb. Pilipinas 2014

My favorite web interviews in Bb. Pilipinas 2014!

My favorite web interviews in Bb. Pilipinas 2014!

Sorry, I got into the web interviews only now even if they have been available online for a couple weeks or more. But I really prefer to look at the girls first before seeing how they speak since Bb. Pilipinas is first and foremost a beauty pageant. To my mind that means physical beauty and physique will always come first with intelligence and communication skills as the runners-up, if you get what I mean.

My Top 10 favorite web interviews (those highlighted in RED are my super-duper-favorites):

#4 Parul Shah

Funny Parul with your O.A. facial expressions during the play-acting part! You best asset IMHO is that wide beauty queen smile which is the hallmark of many Miss U winners. Just be careful girl because your eyes got shifty once at the start of the interview. It’s okay to look away from the camera but just not in a shifty way. You were so relaxed when you were play-acting but you started the interview a little cool. I love your warm, flirty side so flaunt that from the very start of all your interviews. I also didn’t quite like your hair in the vid. I much prefer the glossy tumble of curls that you sometimes sport… but based on what I’ve seen so far, I think you can win a crown if you play your cards right!

#8 Pia Wurtzbach

Pia, you still seem serious. Angelic, for sure, but still serious. And when you get serious, you frown a little. Just a little, but still, a frown is a frown and you want to avoid facial lines on your forehead during interviews. So I think you should smile more while talking because you tend to speak with a serious expression and only break into a smile every now and then or at the end of a sentence. Maybe you should avoid talking about how serious you can be?  And then focus on bringing out the bubbly Pia whom I have met and seen in previous Bb. events. There’s a big chance of you winning a crown so bring on the sunshine sweetheart!

#9 Joy Antonette Diaz

Truly, you made me laugh with your funny puns and hilarious attempt to sell a mustache pen! I wanted to buy one by the end of your video. I thought you were so well put together and had one of the best interviews. But is there a way to soften your twang? Maybe modulate your voice a little, lower it a bit or something? I think it’ll be worth the effort to learn how to have softer (but still strong) speaking voice. But overall, your web interview was quite impressive!

#13 Kris Janson

Love you so much Kris, you’ve got a winning face, a warm personality and a smart way of speaking. I have my ‘eye’ on you for one of the crowns! But just be careful with your subject-verb agreement. I know grammar is not that important in pageants; the main thing is to be able to express yourself well and make sense, right? But if you can improve in any way, then go for it. Just so you know, your eye trick freaked me out (in a good way) and I loved that little thing about airports you mentioned in your intro! Great web interview!

#18 Ellore Punzalan

You have been consistently delivering in Bb. Pilipinas 2014, Ellore! Choosing to speak mostly in Pilipino (and speaking it intelligently) during the web interview was a nice touch and your tula was SO ADORABLE! Para akong nanonood ng Batibot, ahaha! And, when you shifted to English at the end of your video, you still sounded awesome. In fact I wanted you to continue talking! Keep up the good work…

#22 Bianca Guidotti

I like your naturalness Bianca, and your feminine sweetness. You had GREAT answers without sounding ‘pa-cute’. Your fashionista jacket and casually tousled hair added to your lovely picture. Just watch out because sometimes you frown when you’re speaking. Oh, and thank you for speaking in Portuguese! That skill is truly one of the biggest arguments for you to be put on the throne and sent to Portuguese-speaking Brazil for the Miss Universe 2014. Of course that’s aside from your lovely face (a make-up artist for ABS-CBN who did your make-up once, told me you were so gorgeous) and whip-like body which electrified me during the press presentation!

#25 MJ Lastimosa

Ah. A face that is worth a crown. MJ, you’re just really lovely but allow me to give some pointers. To be honest, you sounded like you were giving a monologue. I know what you said came from the heart, you just delivered it in a way that sounded too practiced. These might sound like tough words but better are the wounds of a friend than the kind words of an enemy, right? Next comment – your answer was a little too long and you were dangerously close to rambling. Avoid that. The trick is to stop talking at the point where they want to hear more from you. And lastly, just a minor thing, work on your articles and count/non-count nouns for better grammar. On the positive side, your gestures were wonderful and your wide smile and varied expressions while speaking gave much sparkle to your beauty. You had GREAT content, a wonderful message and looked absolutely ravishing!

#27 Hannah Ruth Sison

My dear Hannah, you really should enter theater. Your face is extremely expressive and was very engaging in the web interview! Oh, you also reminded me a bit of sex kitten Vivian Velez, one of my favorite Pinay beauties. You laughed a little and I thought that so cute and natural. During the singing part, you looked like a vamp. My advice is to be consistent because in the web interview, you started out flat but when it got to the question part and the final invitation to the pageant, you were so much fun. Dapat, from the start pa lang of all interviews, ganun ka na! And your styling here was fabulous – curls at the bottom of your hair and you in that little black bustier… niiiice! Can you be like this ALL the time?

#28 Carla Lizardo

You gave a very intelligent web interview, Carla, I liked it much. You speak confidently and smoothly, a reflection of how much you’ve grown since you began working as a journalist/anchor for PTV4. Dinig na dinig ang professionalism at sincerity mo. Now is there a way we can get you to flirt a little more? Not in a bastos way ha, but in a charming and engaging way…

#35 Yvethe Santiago

I think out of all the girls, you are the one to beat when it comes to flirting with the camera! You have it down pat. But don’t let that get to your head. I noticed that in your web interview you referred to yourself in the third person. Be careful because the judges might think you’re narcissistic. Please read more about people who refer to themselves in the third person here.  I don’t wish to offend but I am a firm believer in criticism that is meant to help people improve. Besides, I do hope to see you win a crown, Yvethe. I’ve followed your career since you joined that pageant in Korea a few years back and I see you have grown into a fierce/fab pageant competitor. I have heard rumors too that many of the front-runners in the pageant are afraid of you… but again, don’t let that get to your head. And since it seems that you are close to a crown, remember this: The best time to learn humility is before a victory!

Janicel Lubina Hopes to Win Top Model of the World 2014!

After the Philippines’ raging success in pageants last year (2013) the question is – can our girls keep on harvesting crowns abroad?

Well, with ABQ favorite Janicel Lubina set to compete in the Top Model of the World 2014 in Egypt, we might just get our first international victory for 2014!

Janicel Lubina, the reigning Slimmers’ World Miss Bikini Philippines (2013) flies off on March 27, 2014 to El Gouna, a popular tourist destination by the historic Red Sea. She will face more than 50 contestants from around the world. Coronation is on April 11, 2014!

I know many of you ABQ readers were wondering what ever happened to the bikini pageant in China that Janicel was supposed to compete in last year. Well, she’ll be sent to the Top Model of the World instead; Ms. Caroline de Venecia the Philippine franchise-holder of Top Model of the World tied up with Slimmer’s World and decided to send Janicel to the beauty tilt in Egypt.

Its a better opportunity for our girl IMHO, considering the trouble we have with China. Because Egypt is a nation friendly to the Philippines, it’s a better venue. Add to that our heavily weighted ‘sash factor’ and good track record in Top Model of the World, Janicel could very well win the crown.

Best-performing Filipinas in the 21-year-old pageant include Michelle de Leon who won the title in 2007, Lorena Pangan who was 3rd runner-up in 1995, Cherry Ann Chavez, a semi-finalist in 1997, Justine Gabionza who was 4th runner-up in 2002, Rosita Defino who won Miss Congeniality 2008, and Christi Lynn McGarry who made it into the semi-finals in 2010.

So why do I loooove Janicel? The 19 year old Palawena has very pretty Filipina features and is simply stunning on stage. To be honest, she makes my jaw drop and my eyes pop wide open!

Coming from humble beginnings, Janicel Lubina is a pageant prodigy winning provincial titles at the tender ages of 17 and 18 before winning her biggest title to date – Slimmer’s World Miss Bikini Philippines 2013.

Now 19 and better than ever, the 5’8″ part-time model is thrilled for a chance to represent the Philippines internationally. The opportunity is extra-special for Janicel Lubina because she’ll be turning 20 on April 1, 2014 and will be celebrating her birthday for the first time in a foreign country!

Take note that her team just as formidable as she is – Wanderlust swimwear will be her bikini partner, Edwin Uy will design her opening competition attire and finale cocktail dress, Philipp Tampus is her evening gown designer, Ariel Alvarez is doing her national costume while Kim Gan is supplying the rest of her wardrobe.

Janicel Lubina’s stylists and trainers include Domz Ramos for fashion, Gio Flores for make-up, John Cliff Dima-ala for hair, Gelbert Aplal’s Rouge Studio and her Kagandahang Flores family.

Bon Voyage Janicel, bring home the crown!

Kris Tiffany Janson, Bb. #13 like a dream in a pure white terno by designer Cary Santiago

I think it was clear as daylight for pageant fans that Bb. 13 Kris Tiffany Janson would win the Best in National Costume award. The way she looked in that white sampaguita-inspired terno by Cary Santiago! And how she daintily twirled that little parasol! She looked like a living doll that had just stepped off a wedding cake…

Unfortunately, only one winner out of 40 fabulous girls in costume was chosen leaving me wanting more. If I had my way, I would’ve selected a 1st and 2nd runners-up; they would’ve been Bb. 8 Pia Wurtzbach and Bb. 15 Kimverlyn Suiza, respectively.

Bb. #8 Pia Wurtzbach (left) and Bb. #15 Kimverlyn Suiza

Pia Wurtzbach’s National Costume, which could also have qualified as an evening gown entry, was a breath-taking Albert Andrada work of art. The way Pia carried it, her styling and emotion on stage made my heart leap a few times.

As for Kimverlyn Suiza (right), her terno, which was designed by Richie Bondoc had this fabulous aristocratic feel that suited Kim’s fabulous aristocratic beauty. She truly belongs to the haute couture set.

Anyway, here are a few more snapshots of Kris Tiffany Janson in her winning National Costume at Bb. Pilipinas 2014:

Beauty Queen Dianne Cervantes to Undergo Surgery to Remove Bullets

Dianne Cervantes, Miss Philippines Fire 2006

Dianne Cervantes, Miss Philippines Fire 2006

UPDATE as of 7:50pm March 26, 2014. IT LOOKS LIKE OUR PRAYERS ARE WORKING. I RECEIVED A SMS MESSAGE  FROM LORRAINE SHUCK SAYING THAT DIANNE IS LOOKING GOOD AND IS RECOVERING AT THE MOMENT.

As soon as I arrived at my hubby’s studio this morning, our office head Connie asked me, “Do you know Dianne Cervantes, the beauty queen? Because she was shot three times in the head and is fighting for her life!” Read the  story here.

Left photo by Regie Fernandez.

The news chilled me, so I quickly turned on my laptop to check the news and it is horrifyingly true. One of our own beloved beauties was gunned down last night, March 25, 2014, near her home by an as-yet- unknown assailant. Dianne Cerventes was reportedly on a motorbike as a passenger when the lone gunman shot her down. News reports say she is in critical condition at the UST hospital. The driver of the motorbike she was on, survived.

My question is why would anyone shoot her? I can only surmise that there might be a political angle to the attack since Dianne Cervantes serves as a councilor in Hagonoy, Bulacan. Or there could be a personal situation that she is going thru at the moment. Right now, all we can do is guess as the police continue to investigate.

According to Lorraine Schuck, head of the Miss Earth franchise, Dianne Cervantes will undergo surgery today, March 26 in an attempt to remove the three bullets lodged in her head. The operation will be a delicate one but if the doctors can do surgery on her then it must mean that the bullets are in reachable areas and for this blogger it means we have hope that she will survive. Keep her in your prayers today and in the coming days.

2014 has been a tough year for beauty queens and pageant fans – Monica Spear who was Miss Venezuela 2004 and Miss Universe 4th Runner-up 2005 was shot dead in a robbery attempt in January this year. Genesis Carmona, another Venezuelan beauty queen with the title Miss Turismo Carabobo 2013 was also shot dead while she was attending a demonstration.

Francis Dianne Tolentino Cervantes competed in Miss Philippines Earth twice. In 2004 she entered the Top 10 and in 2006 she won the elemental title – Miss Philippines Fire 2006. She represented Central Luzon.

We are all praying for you Dianne!!!

My Picture-Story of Miriam Quiambao and Ardy Roberto’s Wedding…

My husband and I were honored to be guests at the wedding of beauty queen Miriam Quiambao and author Ardy Roberto in Tagaytay last March 25, 2014. It was supposed to be a garden wedding but due to the strong on and off drizzle, we moved into the pavilion of Ville Sommet where the two love-birds said thier I-Do’s. All the ladies I spoke to were thankful for the move because heels do NOT get along with gardens , LOL!

Turns out that Ville Sommet is gorgeous venue for weddings and important life-events. It’s got a sprawling garden covering a hilly terrain. Here is Miriam Quiambao making her bridal entrance in a wedding gown by designer Francis Libiran:

Miriam Quiambao walks down the stony steps of Ville Sommet as makes her grand entrance...

Miriam was glowing as she came down the steps into the pavilion where the guests and her betrothed, Ardy Roberto waited impatiently. Everyone was dying to get the first glimpse of the bride and this is what she looked like… more beautiful than when she won the nation great honor during Miss Universe 1999…

Miriam Quiambao offers a beautiful smile as the guest erupt in cheers!

Miriam Quiambao offers a beautiful smile as the guest erupt in cheers!

I got close to Miriam when I asked her to be my prayer partner when I was going through a personal battle. We were only acquaintances then, but she did not hesitate to give me her full attention at a time when I needed a friend most. She is truly every inch a woman of God.

Right before recieving his bride, Ardy Roberto quickly hugs his Dad. Meantime, Miriam Quiambao wipes away a tear ...

A quick hug with Dad before recieving his bride…

When the bride is making her way down the aisle, I always try to keep one eye on the groom to see how he’s doing. In Ardy’s case, he was blushing like a glass of rosé. He eventually turned beet red when Miriam entered the pavilion. What is it about this part of the wedding that often brings out so much emotion? Above, Miriam wipes away a stray tear as a mesmerized audience looks on.

A light moment as Ardy and Miriam face the altar...

A light moment as Ardy and Miriam laugh at a joke made by the officiating Pastor…

There was so much smiling and laughter at this wedding! Miriam was so natural and care-free while Ardy was beaming from ear to ear. I could almost hear their hearts beat as one.

Some of the Ninongs and Ninangs – Left Peter Kairuz of the 700 Club Philippines with his wife Christine. Right – Mr. Pure Energy Gary V and his wife Angeli…

Peter Kairuz (leftmost dude) of the 700 Club Philippines is one of my favorite people in the world! He said a beautiful prayer for Ardy and Miriam that touched my heart. Gary V. also sang for the lovely couple. A friend at the wedding told me that she always hears his songs played at weddings but this was the first time she’s seen him sing live at someone’s nuptials. Nakakakilabot talaga when Gary V. takes the stage!

Miriam and Ardy spent the whole time exchanging glances...

Miriam and Ardy spent the whole time exchanging glances…

The singer Cher once asked in a song, “Do you believe in love after love?” I certainly do! This is the second marriage for both Ardy and Miriam. Miriam’s marriage ended in divorce years back while Ardy lost his wife to Lupus last year in January. But God is faithful and turned their mourning into dancing again!

Ardy Roberto making his nuptial vows to Miriam Quiambao as his son Joshy inserts himself into the picture, LOL!

Ardy Roberto making his nuptial vows to Miriam Quiambao as his son Joshy inserts himself into the picture, LOL!

During his vows, Ardy said something that really struck me. He said that when he was a young man he believed that God worked in mysterious ways. But now that he’s older he realizes that the Lord is really not that mysterious. Why? Because God lives up to his promises and that makes Him predictable. You might not know the timing but God always delivers.

I also felt so touched that Ardy mentioned his late wife Tingting and how devastating it was when she passed on. Yet in his days of mourning God impressed on his heart that he would love again. Ardy also shared the story of when he asked his son Joshy if it was okay to find a new mommy and the boy said YES!

Now it's Miriam Quiambao's turn to pledge herself to Ardy...

Now it’s Miriam Quiambao’s turn to pledge herself to Ardy…

Miriam read her entire 8-page vow at the wedding as the crowd listened intently. The one thing that touched me deeply was when she said that what impressed her most about Ardy was that he was such a devoted, faithful and loving husband to his late wife. Because of that she is certain that he will love her fully and make her happy.

Isn’t it wonderful when you embrace the past of someone and love them unconditionally?

Ardy Roberto (middle) with my hubby Ron T. and little Joshy

Ardy Roberto (middle) with my hubby Ron T. and little Joshy.

That’s my wonderful hubby in the pale suit. He took almost all the photos in this post. How do I know Ardy Roberto? Well, we were schoolmates in Benedictine Abby in the mid-80s. He was two or three years ahead of me. Do you know that in those days he was a classical ballet dancer? Ha! Bet you didn’t know that!

It's time for the exchange of rings...

It’s time for the exchange of rings…

Take a close look at Miriam’s face in the top photo. She’s grinning from ear to ear because she realizes that the ring is a little too tight for Ardy’s finger. But she was persistent and managed to get the band securely around his ring finger. Miriam says she’s been making Ardy work out at the gym so maybe he’s gained some extra muscles in his fingers? Aahahaaha!

Miriam and Ardy pour out giant vials of colored sand to symbolize the union of their lives...

Miriam and Ardy pour out giant vials of colored sand to symbolize the union of their lives…

This is a new trend in weddings called the “Sand Ceremony” where the bride and groom pour out differently colored sand into one clear vase to symbolize the union of their lives from two individuals to one couple. Miriam chose pink sand while Ardy had light blue. How adorably cute. The colors made me think of babies!!! LOLZ!

And now they are ONE!

And now they are ONE!

Finally, Ardy and Miriam are pronounced man and wife (or husband and wife, if you prefer that). Miriam gives the most beautiful smile in the universe and Ardy makes a victory fist! But because I am very worldly (don’t tell my pastor ha?) this is not the highlight for me. It’s what happened NEXT: The Locking of LIPS!

13) Miriam Quiambao and Ardy Roberto's wedding kiss!

The most important part of the wedding! THE KISS!

Ardy and Miriam, can I just thank you for that fabulous wedding kiss? I have been to many weddings in the Philippines but always feel like the kiss part is always bitin. The girl is too shy or the boy doesn’t know how to pucker up properly. Then it lasts for half a second. Sigh.

But the Ardy-Miriam wedding kiss was nothing like that! It was a long kiss with enough passion to make all the girls kilig but not so much as to cause discomfort among the old schoolers, aahahah! These two can conduct kissing classes for couples about to get married!

Post kiss moment...

Post kiss moment…

Yes, there were many Twilight moments like this where all they could do was stare and drink each other in. But it wasn’t cheesy, folks! It was heart-warming and most beautiful!

And now they are one family! Miriam, Ardy and Joshy Roberto!

And now they are one family! Miriam, Ardy and Joshy Roberto!

One of my favorite moments during the wedding ceremony was the exchange of vows between Miriam and Joshy. When you think about it, she’s not just marrying Ardy, she’s also taking Joshy into her life! It was so cute to hear Joshy say a loud YES to Miriam being his new Mommy!

What a gorgeous couple! Miriam and Ardy!

What a gorgeous couple! Miriam and Ardy!

This beautiful photo was on every table napkin in the pavilion. On the reverse, each guest is asked to give advice to leave behind for the couple. But this naughty girl decided to just keep the photo. It was too gorgeous to leave behind. I’ll just put my advice here in my blog nalang – To Miriam, be the number 1 cheerleader of Ardy and never plead a headache, hehehe. To Ardy, be the number 1 cuddler of Miriam and make sure to always tell her she is the most beautiful woman in the whole wide UNIVERSE!

Me with Ardy and some guests at the wedding!

Yey! There I am in my Honolulu garden dress which is close to my heart because my Mom bought it for me. Anyway, Im with Ardy Roberto in the top left photo, Kata Inocencio (my mentor) in the top right one. At the bottom left I’m with one of my favorite actresses, Coney Reyes and in the bottom right photo I’m with Ruffa Gutierrez and two other PRETTY girls… FUN!

Finally! They are back after their short break and we can all take photos and enjoy the wedding banquet which included Puttanesca, Mixed Veggies, Green Salad, Ox Tongue, Lamb Chops, Roast Chicken, Ribs, Pannacotta, a Chocolate Mousse Cake and Wine for all!

Look carefully at the background and you’ll see Anthony Pangilinan with his beautiful wife Maricel Laxa with their daughter. They were the emcees for the entertainment portion. They were also the Cord Sponsors during the wedding proper. Can I just say that Maricel Laxa looks fabulously fabulous? She is worthy of a beauty queen crown, IMHO…

I don’t recognize everyone in this photo but here’s who I do know – Left to right – Phoemela Barranda, a cute guy and then a cute girl. Then there Garlic Garcia, Miriam Quiambao Roberto, Ardy Roberto, Crystal Belo, a pretty girl, Ruffa Gutierrez (who was stunning in her bronze gown) and then lastly, another pretty girl in blue. If you recognize anyone please leave me a note in the comments section, por favor!

Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful and endures through every circumstance...

Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful and endures through every circumstance…

What a beautiful wedding full of smiles and stories of God’s redemption and love. I am excited to see Ardy and Miriam embark on a new life together with Joshy. It won’t be an easy journey as marriage is guaranteed to be rocky ride, but with God as the third cord in this union, Ardy and Miriam are destined to become one of the most beautiful and inspirational couples in the Philippines.

PS… watch out for Miriam’s book coming out soon. And of course, Ardy will be sure to write volumes on his new love!

ABQ’s Top 15 Binibinis for 2014 !!!

$
0
0

Choosing my Top 15 in this year’s Bb. Pilipinas 2014 was a painful chore not unlike waxing my legs or visiting the dentist. But only because I had a hard time choosing from among this year’s collection of 40 gorgeous gals! It seems like our nation’s success in winning beauty titles the past few years is attracting the most stunning and accomplished young Filipinas to the world of competitive pageants.

Note that I did not directly forecast anything for the Tourism title because I have deep misgivings about it and feel that its an empty title. Since I have much to say about this, I’ll save it for a different post. Meantime….

…on to my fearless forecast of 15 Top Binbinis for 2014!!!

READ THIS STORY ON YAHOO PHILIPPINES!

MY TOP 5:

My Top 5 Girls - clockwise from upper left - Kris Tiffany Janson, Pia Wurtzbach, Parul Shah, Hannah Ruth Sison and Yvethe Santiago

My Top 5 Girls – clockwise from upper left – Kris Tiffany Janson, Pia Wurtzbach, Parul Shah, Hannah Ruth Sison and Yvethe Santiago

1) Parul Shah for Miss Universe Philippines.

Several reasons why I think Parul is perfect for the Universe Philippines title – she’s got that wide crescent moon smile that is the hallmark of many MU winners. This Fil-Indian charmer has a sexy, tight body and flat, muscular abs – the build Miss Universe tends to favor. This is the 2nd time for Parul to join Bb. Pilipinas after making it to the semi-finals last year.

2) Kris Tiffany Janson for any crown.

A universal beauty, Kris Tiffany Janson will do well in any international pageant. This Cebuana has that signature doll-look that pageant fanatics adore, she is very articulate, a real charmer and has a bikini-worthy body. I’ve heard many pageant critics say that out of all the girls in this batch only Kris Tiffany Janson is sure to win a crown.

3) Yvethe Santiago for any crown

Yvethe is another beauty who can do the nation proud in any of the international tilts. She is a mannequin and a beauty queen rolled into one fabulous body. She combines fierceness with sweetness. Zing!

Yvethe is such a rising star and is the favorite of many pageant fans. But there are some who feel she is still too young. One observer suggested that the Bicolana should place as a runner-up to give her one year of training before joining again just like Janine Tugonon did a few years back. But we’re not the judges to make that decision. Let’s see what happens on coronation night March 30!

4) Pia Wurtzbach for International or Universe

This is Pia’s second time in Bb. Pilipinas (she was the lone runner-up last year) and we all know that the former actress is gunning for the Universe title. But I think she’ll also be good for Bb Pilipinas International. Her winning assets are her striking beauty, generous curves in the right places, great communication skills and fierce catwalk.

5) Hannah Ruth Sison for International or Intercontinental

I think this Bb. Pilipinas 2nd-timer is one of the most underrated beauties in this year’s batch. Maybe it’s because she tends to fluctuate between fabulous and flat. But when she is fabulous, Hannah Ruth is a winner! All she has to do is get the styling right and bring out her bubbly, sweet self.

My Middle 5 Choices

My Middle 5 Girls - clockwise from upper left - Bianca Guidotti, MJ Lastimosa, Julian Ellore Punzalan, Aurine Flores and Joy Diaz

My Middle 5 Girls – clockwise from upper left – Bianca Guidotti, MJ Lastimosa, Julian Ellore Punzalan, Aurine Flores and Joy Diaz

I believe that these five girls are the biggest threat to my Top 5 favorites. All of them are just as polished and crown-worthy so there is no relaxing for a moment. Competition is just too stiff!

6) Bianca Guidotti

There is a huge possibility that Bianca will grab the Universe title on the argument that she partly grew up in Brazil and speaks their language. Brazil will be host country for the Miss Universe this year and if we send a girl who can connect with the people there, we’ll certainly make waves. Another plus – if you watch her web interview, she’s smart, very natural and relaxed with no pretense whatsoever. I also find her body to be perfect for Miss U purposes – very tight and firm but still feminine. Keep an eye on this girl.

7) Ellore Punzalan

Just like Bea Santiago, Miss International 2013, Ellore has this amazing presence when she’s on stage. Her Filipina beauty is very alluring, her anaconda-like body moves with fluid grace and she is a sharp communicator in both English and Tagalog. The titles she might snatch from under the noses of the front-runners would be Universe, International or maybe Intercontinental.

8) MJ Lastimosa

From what I know, MJ only qualifies for the Universe title because of issues with age. Does she have a chance at that title? I think so but it’s an uphill climb with rivals like Parul, Kris Janson, Yvethe and Bianca Guidotti who will certainly make it difficult for her to ascend to the crown.

Now if there were no age problems, I do see her as a possible successor to Mutya Datul for the Bb. Supranational title. Intercontinental too would suit her. It’s MJ’s third attempt at a Bb. crown so wish her the best!

9) Julian Aurine Flores

I am in love with the pretty face and bubbly personality of Julian Aurine! She was incredibly funny in the web interview too and had that Miss U vibe about her. But can she win that or any other crown? It will be tough but if she manages to impress the judges then I think she’d be good for Supra or Intercontinental.

10) Joy Diaz

One of the smartest girls in the group, Joy Diaz gave a brilliant performance in the web interview. The US-bred Filipina was asked to sell a ‘moustache pen’ and I was ready to order a few hundred pieces one the strength of her crazy spiel. She gave the kind of answer you hope to get from a Miss Universe contestant!

My Last 5 Choices:

My Last 5 Girls - clockwise from top right - Nicole Marie Manalo, Kimverlyn Suiza, Carla Lizardo, Joy Gangan and Laura Lehmann

My Last 5 Girls – clockwise from top right – Nicole Marie Manalo, Kimverlyn Suiza, Carla Lizardo, Joy Gangan and Laura Lehmann

11) Kimverlyn Suiza

Kim’s main appeal is her elegant beauty which makes me think of classic ivory cameos. Her kind of beauty might not be the trend in pageants but the Nagcarlan native is lovely to behold and is well-spoken. I certainly wouldn’t mind it if she won a crown.

12) Nichole Marie Manalo

Do not overlook this beauty. She’s got an arsenal of weapons hiding somewhere up her sleeve or in the heel of her shoe. The blood of beauty queens runs in her veins – her sisters are Pamela Bianca and Katherine Manalo both Bb. Pilipinas titleholders. So watch out for this one…

13) Carla Lizardo
I am really happy to see Carla doing so well in Bb. Pilipinas. The TV anchor is giving it her best shot and I think she’ll score big points with judges in the Q&A not just for her smarts but for her lovely face which is even more attractive up close and sans make-up.

14) Laura Lehmann

Laura Lehman’s strongest asset apart from her pert look and firm bod are her accomplishments at such a young age. One of them is the pursuit of a triple degree in Psychology, Neuroscience and Spanish Studies.

15) Joy Gangan

Joy is my sentimental favorite. I love her story of growing up as a farmer girl in Isabela.
She is a doll from head to toe and would be a great successor to Mutya Datul for the Supranational crown however, Joy lacks the vivaciousness that made Mutya an international winner. But no matter, with more time and training I’m sure Joy’s bubbly self will come out!

Last Minute Thoughts Before Coronation Night…

All ready for tonight!!!!

All ready for tonight!!!!

It’s hard to believe that nearly 30 years ago I was on that stage in Araneta Coliseum fighting for the very same crown that all 40 Bb. Pilipinas 2014 candidates are gunning for. Things were so different then. We couldn’t wear false lashes or butt extenders, LOL! Surgical enhancements were shocking then. And we all wore one-piece swimsuits, aahaha!

But you know what? I often find myself liking it now better. I love the professionalism that our pageant industry has been able to achieve. Having a pretty face and slim body is not enough. These girls spend months improving their skills for the catwalk, the camera and the Q&A. Training in the gym and proper nutrition are now part of their preparation. And personality development has become their science.

In many ways I am also impressed by the join-and-join-again trend. It surely wasn’t in fashion during my time! You joined only once or twice at the most. But to me, it shows that our girls can stand up again after a setback and that going thru loss only makes them stronger.

Speaking of loss, my deepest prayer today will not really be for our winners. I’ll save my prayers for them later. But today, I cherish in my heart the girls who will have to face disappointment tonight. So this is what I have to say to them…

Remember, that a pageant will NEVER define who you are, unless you allow it to. So if you lose, do not call yourself a loser. You are not!

At the same time, losing SHOULD make you feel bad, it SHOULD make you go down on your knees and cry. And yet like a good soldier, learn how to carry your battle scars with pride!

And please, don’t deny yourself a time to mourn. Mourning is part of the healing process. But get back up and find the path that God has set out for you. Whether it be to join again or to move on to something new. Just move!

And always, ALWAYS remember, even in the face of mockers and self-doubt: you ARE special and you ARE beautiful and you ARE loved. So be strong girl and keep fighting!

MJ is our newly crowned Miss Philippines Universe 2014!

MJ is our newly crowned Miss Philippines Universe 2014!

It is past 3 in the morning as I type this and I’m as tired as a limp rag but a very happy one!

I just got back home from the victory party of MJ Lastimosa, the girl who risked it all for one last shot at the Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2014 crown (officially called Miss Philippines Universe 2014) and won it!

I have so much to say about this but the main thing is that I AM VERY HAPPY for MJ’s victory because her’s is a story of redemption and vindication.

While I rejoice for MJ Lastimosa, my heart is breaking for the lovely Pia Wurtzbach. We really thought she was going to win the Universe crown after she had gotten several special awards. But even if she ended the night without a crown, she was gracious all the way to the end. Not once did she betray any disappointment on her face. A true beauty queen.

I have SO MUCH MORE to say but I’m just too tired to tell you so I’ll save it for tomorrow when I’ve gotten my beauty rest.

And after you scroll down thru this, you better get your beauty sleep too!

Pia Wurtzbach's self-intro at Bb. Pilipinas 2014

Pia Wurtzbach’s self-intro at Bb. Pilipinas 2014

I had a strong feeling that there’d be one major disappointment for pageant fans in the coronation results of Bb. Pilipinas 2014. That’s why I wrote this post (click here to read) in anticipation of it. I just didn’t think it would be Pia Wurtzbach. I really thought she’d wake up today with her face splashed all over the newspapers.

It is hard to believe that this girl did not win a title. Pia Wurtzbach during the swimsuit competition at Bb. Pilipinas 2014.

While I was leaping for joy over MJ Lastimosa’s coronation, I couldn’t help but feel like her victory party was a little empty without Pia Wurtzbach there to celebrate with us. At the party, I tried hard not to think of the pain Pia must have been going through – the pain of being a runner-up last year and then nothing this year. The pain of being touted as sure to win then going home with tail tucked in.

Pia Wurtzbach won 2 special awards – from Jag and PAL – leading fans to believe that she’d win a crown…

Ironically, it seemed like Pia was walking in the footsteps of MJ Lastimosa herself – if you remember when MJ first joined Bb. Pilipinas, she placed as a runner-up. MJ joined a second time, was expected to win but left the stage with no crown, just a semi-final placement. It was such a painful loss for MJ (read the story here) that she vowed never to join again. But then she changed her mind and tried one more time and finally won the plum crown.

MJ Lastimosa eclipses Pia Wurtzbach as she moves forward to be crowned Miss Philippines Universe 2014. The crowd erupts in madness. In the back, Pia graciously maintains her composure in the midst of loss.

But will Pia Wurtzbach do an MJ and join a third time? It’s too early to say. When I visited Pia’s Instagram this morning, this was her post-Bb. Pilipinas 2014 message to her friends and fans -

GRATEFUL that I was able to experience what it’s like to be a part of the pageant world. When I placed 1st RU last year, I gave all my time, effort & love to my job. I had so much fun! I just tried again because I wanted to know of this was really meant for me. But how do you know if you don’t take chances, right? I’m glad I made it this far. No doubt that I learned so much from it. I’m a better person now than I was a year ago. Thank you to my mentors from Aces & Queens for teaching me everything I know & transforming me! & to my supporters for pushing me & encouraging me. THANK YOU!! Time to turn the page & move on to a new chapter!;)

Here is the screen shot of Pia’s Instagram with the message above.

Pia Wurtzbach’s post Bb. Pilipinas 2014 message to her fans…

It was such a relief to read this because as I said, I’ve been avoiding thinking about how she must feel. I just cannot bear the thought of someone as beautiful as Pia, all dolled-up then left out of the party. But her Instagram message, at least to me, proves that she’s okay. In fact, she sounds like she’s more okay than us, her fans! Pia is like a boxer who is quick to stand up after being knocked down for a few seconds.

But now she’s got me wondering… what did she mean by, “Time to turn the page & move on to a new chapter!;)” ?

Could it mean the end of her pageant career? Or will she do an MJ, join again and finally win? Let’s see what happens. At the moment I am just so glad that our sweet and dear Pia was quick to post such a comforting message to all of us who are worried about her. It truly is a mystery how some who experience loss still have the strength to comfort others.

Let me leave you with this thought from author Chuck Palahniuk – “It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything.”

Be free and beautiful Pia and hope to see you in fighting form in the next stage of your life…

More gorgeous photos of our newest Bb. Pilipinas queens! All of them taken during their first press conference as beauty queen winners. The press conference was held at the Balay in Cubao today at 3pm. Here’s what I saw at the event…

Hannah Ruth Sison, Bb. Pilipinas 2014 2nd Runner-up

Hannah Ruth Sison, Bb. Pilipinas 2014 2nd Runner-up

Hannah Ruth Sison was the first to be called out. The 2nd Runner-up of Bb. Pilipinas is a favorite of this blogger and I had her pegged for a crown. But 2nd Runner-up is a great honor and will give her priceless training then she can join again if ever. But if she goes for another round, she’ll have to do it next year since she’s already about to age out at 25. I love this Makati lass for her expressive eyes!

Laura Lahmann, Bb. Pilipinas 2014 1st Runner-up

Laura Lahmann, Bb. Pilipinas 2014 1st Runner-up

Stunning in white, Laura Lehmann is the 1st Runner-up in the batch. This girl has the kind of beauty that grows on you. She is quite the pageant newbie, receiving her flowers then forgetting to stop and pose for the photographers! We had to call her back to the front. Hard to believe that this softball player has had numerous injuries including broken limbs and a total of 125 stitches!

3) Parul Shah, Bb. Pilipinas Tourism 2014

3) Parul Shah, Bb. Pilipinas Tourism 2014

ABQ will ALWAYS be a Parul Shah fan! When she was announced as Bb. Pilipinas Tourism 2014, she broke into the most beautiful smile and to me, she seemed so very thankful for the crown. While I had her touted for the Universe title, I too am thankful she has this crown and the opportunity to compete internationally. Her advocacy is volunteerism and was active during relief ops for Bohol and Tacloban last year.

4) Yvethe Santiago, Bb. Pilipinas Supranational 2014

4) Yvethe Santiago, Bb. Pilipinas Supranational 2014

One of the big favorites of pageant fans, Yvethe Santiago was bright-eyed and busy-tailed at the Victory Presscon in Balay. The winner of the Bb. Pilipinas Supranational title, I am confident that she can pull off a back-to-back win in the Supranational beauty pageant to be held in Europe later this year. The Philippines currently holds the title through Mutya Datul.

5) Bianca Guidotti, Bb. Pilipinas International 2014

5) Bianca Guidotti, Bb. Pilipinas International 2014

The thing I love best about Bianca Guidotti, our Bb. Pilipinas International 2014 winner is her authentic smile. There is a very obvious difference between a trained beauty queen smile and a smile that comes from the heart of a beautfiul woman. Hers definitely comes from the heart. Keep on smiling Bianca and pray that Bea Rose Santiago will crown you as the next Miss Interantional 2014 in Japan! A back-to-back win is NOT impossible!

MJ Lastimosa, Miss Philippines Universe 2014

MJ Lastimosa, Miss Philippines Universe 2014

Glowing and smiling ear to ear, MJ Lastimosa walked in to the applause of the press. How we all love her story! She joined Bb. three times – the first time she won runner-up, the second time she only entered the semis and was crushed by the loss. The third time, she risked it all and won the right to compete in Miss Universe 2014! The next time things don’t work out for me, I’ll think of you, MJ, and keep fighting!

L-R Laura Lehmann (1st RU), Yvethe Santiago (Supra), Bianca Guidotti (International), MJ Lastimosa (Universe), Kris Janson (Intercontinental), Parul Shah (Tourism) and Hannah Ruth Sison (2nd Runner-up)

L-R Laura Lehmann (1st Runner-up), Yvethe Santiago (Supranational), Bianca Guidotti (International), MJ Lastimosa (Universe), Kris Janson (Intercontinental), Parul Shah (Tourism) and Hannah Ruth Sison (2nd Runner-up)

Mirror, mirror on the wall… who’s the prettiest of them all? I can’t choose because they are so gorgeous! I can see them all doing well and even winning in their respective international pageants!

I believe that I am worthy. I believe in myself and I guess that’s the best armor that I have and the best weapon that I have. Even if I don’t have a previous winner to be there for me to tell me what Intercontinental is all about, I know that Bb. will be there they know what I need to bring home the crown. – Kris Tiffany Janson, Bb. Everything is still starting to sink in. I think I share the same feeling with the rest of the queens. We’re not yet used to all the attention we get when we go out. It’s not the same as it was before but we are trying to learn new things. Thanks to Bb. Pilipinas for helping us get through it. – Yvethe Santiago, Bb. Pilipinas Supranational 2014

Im very very happy about the outcome (of the pageant). I guess especially because… a lot of people were saying its one of the best batches Bb. has had. I think what makes it better is that this batch… is one of the most friendly batches. We’re all friends and there’s no bitterness or cattiness. They’re like my ‘ates,’ I love them! -  Laura Lehmann, Bb. Pilipinas 2014 1st Runner-up

“I just want to explain that there was a faux pas during the Bb. Pilipinas coronation last Sunday because these two ladies (Bea and Mutya in the front) were supposed to parade with their national crowns but nobody gave them their crowns, I wanted to make up for it. Because (while) these ladies (in the back) are the current winners, (Mutya and Bea) are STILL Miss Supranational and Miss International for the coming months. So I want them to know that I apologize for what happened.” – Madame Stella Marquez Araneta, head of Bb. Pilipinas Charities Organization

Since Mutya and Bea weren’t able to pose with the winners while wearing their official crowns during coronation night, Mme. Stella did a delayed tableau to make up for things. Mutya and Bea were visibly touched by the gesture. SMA loves her girls no matter what some bashers may claim.

(Joining a 3rd time) was a last-minute decision for me. That was around late December (2013). I was hesitant. I was praying a lot, am I going to join or not. A lot of friends were telling me, when I was in the states, that they adjusted the age limit in Bb. Pilipinas. It was a tough decision, one of the toughest in my life. I’m not the usual risk-taker but now I can say that I am a risk-taker. Some people made me realize that I have it. That I have the qualifications to be a Miss Universe. – MJ Lastimosa, Miss Philippines Universe 2014

Oh no! Our representative to the Top Model of the World 2014, Janicel Lubina is still in Manila. She was supposed to have left on March 27, 2014 to compete in the modeling competition which will be held in El Gouna, Egypt. Here’s the SMS message sent to me by her PR:

Waiting for her visa to be released by interior ministry in Cairo. Travel agency on standby to book her to Cairo ASAP. The major concern is that she should arrive in El Gouna (in time) to qualify for competition proper beginning Sunday (April 6, 2014). We are hoping for the best.

ABQ hopes that the Egyptian embassy helps expedite the process. Cairo is a twelve hour flight from Manila then to El Ghouna it’s a 6 hour drive by car. But there are flights available to El Gouna form Cairo so that would be the best choice because we’re running out of time.

Let’s all pray for Janicel Lubina who is also the reigning Slimmer’s World Miss Bikini Philippines… she is ready to compete and has a big chance at the Top Model of the World title! Sayang naman if she can’t go!

Janicel Lubina could very well give us our first international crown for 2014 so let's pray she gets her visa!

“Mom, I hope MJ wins!”

About 22 hours before this North Cotabato/Davao beauty was crowned, I was chatting with my daughter Diandra on Skype. Diandra has ALWAYS been a major major fan of MJ. When MJ lost in 2012, my baby girl and I were so upset. Anyway, I was telling my daughter about how gorgeous the girls were this year and she said, “Mom, I hope MJ wins!” Well, she got her wish! The Biggest Spoiler of the Night?

One ABQ reader asked me this question: Most of the other forums (if not all) and pageant-related blogs including yours were not able to pick MJ as their universe. she’s not even in your top 5 knowing that she is a pageant veteran. Can you tell us your reason?

While I do adore MJ and have written many many times on why I love her, I did not think she’d win because I felt there were politics going on and that there were certain biases against her that would diminish her chances. But I was wrong!

Here’s the best explanation from one of my readers, Jay the Pogi, who felt exactly the same way:

In the end…… MJ was the biggest ‘spoiler’ of the night…. she is the girl that we all thought can win but will most likely not win… she is that girl who has all the qualities of a winner- but we all thought may not get it for whatever reason.

I have to say Im guilty of this mistake…. but was still hoping for MJ to get just about anything for the finals… and then she won MUP 2014, even Shamcey was crying :-) you can feel that everybody is happy even those who felt that she will not win MUP… and because we all wanted to be wrong……. and we were all happy to be wrong :-)

MJ on her Haters…

Well, what is life without haters? They will always be there so might as well embrace them. Because they are wasting their time reading something about you. It means that you’re running through their head. – MJ Lastimosa, Miss Philippines Universe 2014

Best in Swimsuit Winner!

For the first time ever, MJ Lastimosa wins the Best in Swimsuit award. The first time she joined Bb. Pilipinas in 2011, the award went to Queenierich Rehman. When she joined again in 2012, the swimsuit honor went to Nicole Schmitz. This year, MJ won the award and it sure is much deserved!  I think when she goes to the Miss Universe 2014 (it was supposed to be in Brazil but that’s been cancelled) she will score big in the swimsuit competition.

Note that Binibini Batch 2011 has given us 3 Miss Philippines-Universe titleholders – Shamcey Supsup, Janine Tugonon and now MJ Lastimosa. 2011 was truly a super batch!

MJ’s Winning Q&A

That MJ Lastimosa would end up with judge Gabriela Isler as her ‘questioner’ – was that luck or destiny? Since I think very little of luck, I believe MJ was destined to get Gabriela who is our reigning Miss Universe 2013. The question was also very graciously answered by MJ.

Question from Miss Universe 2013 Gabriela Isler: March is the women’s month. For you, what is the greatest advantage of being a woman?

Bb. #25 Mary Jean Lastimosa: The greatest advantage of being a woman is being able to compose herself. Just like here, we’re standing in front of thousands of people, not knowing if you’re going to cheer for us or boo us. But we try to compose ourselves. We keep the emotions and show the beauty that is in us and tonight, thousands of people are standing here, celebrating the beauty of women.

What I really liked about her answer is that it’s not a common one. I have never heard of anyone else choosing ‘composure’ as the greatest advantage of being a woman. (Correct me if  I’m wrong, guys!)  But it is so true. I agree that our ability to keep calm and composed in the midst of uncertainty (and even danger) is one of the greatest advantages of being a woman. We know how to hold our own!

MJ’s Winning Moment!

MJ Lastimosa’s winning moment was precious and my wonderful hubby Ron caught it all on cam! When they announced her name, the audience went into a roaring wild frenzy. I was jumping in my seat and my co-blogger Domz (check out his blog here) was screaming at the top of his lungs. We hugged in joy and joined the crowd in cheering for MJ’s vindication and win!

“Now I can say that I am a risk-taker!” – MJ

MJ Lastimosa was a crowd favorite that night garnering thunderous applause every time it was her turn on stage. I think people were amazed that she had decided to give Bb. Pilipinas a third and last try so the applause was not just for her stunning beauty but for her bravery as well. I heard rumors that some people close to her told her to forget about Bb. Pilipinas because it was too late, she would not win. But she also had friends that encouraged her to give it one more shot. It was the latter group that convinced her to try again.

– MJ Lastimosa at her first press conference as Miss Universe Philippines 2014.

A Haunting Moment…

In this scene we see Pia Wurtzbach in the background, still smiling in the midst of her loss. What is haunting to me is that Pia here is living up to the very same words that MJ had just spoken that evening – that the greatest advantage of being a woman is being able to compose yourself. Such wisdom from MJ and such strength from Pia. I love them both so much! (Click here to read Pia’s post Bb. Pilipinas message.)

The New Queens Rejoice!

The queens are caught in different modes of joy – MJ Lastimosa is overwhelmed as Kris Tifanny Janson (Intercontinental) happily envelopes her in a sisterly embrace. Bianca Guidotti (International), in the dark blue gown is beaming from ear to ear and about to join the hug. On the left is Parul Shah (Tourism) who looks so pleased while Yvethe Santiago (Intercontinental) in light blue gestures to runner-up Laura Lehmann as if to say, ‘let’s join in the group hug and celebrate!’

Wait! No pictures til I get my crown back!

I was so busy taking photos that I did not realize there was a moment when MJ Lastimosa had her crown off. I just love her gesture here asking for a quick break until the crown is back on her head. In the foreground are the rabid photographers who rushed the stage to take their group shot. I was one of them, LOL!

This is like 3 years in the making! During the competition I would always imagine myself winning the Universe crown and nothing else. But I didn’t expect the feeling would be this happy. Finally, God heard my prayers! – MJ Lastimosa, Miss Philippines Universe 2014

Mary Jean Lastimosa, Miss Universe Philippines 2014

26-year-old North Cotabato native Mary Jean Lastimosa is an entrepreneur. A personal advocate of staying fit, she successfully established her own slimming center in Davao.

Growing up in a war-torn province, she developed values of determination and courageousness, and this is something she brought to her personal life, her career and her journey to the Bb. Pilipinas crown.

Bb. Pilipinas Unvierse 2004 Maricar Balagtas is her inspiration for joining the pageant again because Maricar joined three times before winning. Whenever MJ feels down, she looks to Maricar and thinks that if she was able to do it then so can she.

On her free time, she loves working out at the gym, traveling, modeling, dancing and surfing social media websites.”

Can MJ Win Miss Universe?

Why do I think we have an excellent Miss Universe rep in MJ Lastimosa?

Firstly – the Miss Universe Organization was here in Manila in the person of MUO President Paula Shugart when MJ won. Even if Paula did not sit on the board of judges, Gabriella Isler, the reigning MU winner was a judge and to my mind it’s impossible that they would be here and NOT have a hand in choosing the girl they felt would do best in this year’s Miss Universe.

The next reason – MJ Lastimosa has been tempered by loss. She has been humbled by it. She knows what defeat tastes like. And to her, this crown was three years in the making; almost like a college degree! Three years plus the risk of losing again is a HUGE investment. So I believe MJ is going to cherish her win and work hard for the Miss Universe 2014 crown. I do not doubt it!

Third reason – She is a complete beauty queen package. Her stunning body, Latina-flavored beauty and gracious way of answering questions will surely catch the attention of judges at the Miss Universe.

Lastly – she is backed by Filipino pageant fans who love her and you know just how crazy they can be! Expect a full-force of supporters online that will show their fierce love for MJ. Such a huge following will be difficult to ignore by the organizers of Miss Universe.

I do believe that we have a big chance of winning the elusive Miss Universe crown this year!

What I’ve been asking from my supporters are prayers because I’ve believe that’s the most powerful thing in the universe. Janicel Lubina’s Egypt Visa Denied Due to “Security Risk”?

Hmmm… How bizarre. Janicel Lubina was reportedly denied a visa to Egypt due to security reasons. Perhaps she is a security risk kasi all the candidates in Top Model of the World will lose the crown to her? KALERKY to the max!

Egypt thinks this girl is a security risk. In many ways, this blogger AGREES!

Egypt thinks this girl is a security risk. In many ways, this blogger AGREES!

I’m so annoyed by this piece of news but will not let it get my goat. Egypt is still on my bucket list as a vacation destination but will keep in mind that some of their consuls are…. Well, you can supply the adjective because baka ma-deny din ako ng visa! Hahaha!

Here is the official statement from Janicel Lubina and her camp:

Top Model of the World Philippines Inc. the official franchise holder of Top Model of the World in the Philippines informs the public, with a heavy heart, that our country’s official delegate, Ms. Janicel Lubina, will no longer be competing in the Top Model of the World competition on April 11, 2014 in El Gouna, Red Sea in Egypt after she was denied a visa by the Egyptian embassy due to “security reasons”. We were all in high hopes that her visa would be released in time, hence the Send-off Presscon last March 25, since there was no hint of a visa application rejection.

All efforts have been exhausted to solve the problem and even Detlef Tursies, President and Owner of World Beauty Organization, the organizers of Top Model of the World pageant, pulled some strings to contact the Consul from the Philippines but to no avail.

Top Model of the World Phils. Inc tied up with Slimmers World International, organizers of Miss Bikini Phils. Pageant only in sending Ms. Janicel Lubina to the Top Model of the World Inc. since she is the reigning Miss Bikini Philippines. However, all preparations leading to her supposed participation in the said international pageant are all from our end and Slimmers World International holds no responsibility on the issue.

We understand the public’s sentiment re: Janicel’s non-participation in the competition because she would have been a strong contender and perhaps, would have won for our country our very first Top Model of the World title had it not been for the non-issuance of visa. We will surely learn from this experience and we pray for your continuous support to our official delegates in the coming years.

1) Andrew Wolff, Mr. World Philippines 2012 and Mr. World 2012 1st Runner-up

Last year, Cory Quirino promised us a full-blown pageant for the Mr. World Philippines 2014 competition and it is going to happen in the second week of May 2014!

She made the confirmation yesterday, April 8, 2014, in a press conference at the Atrium of Glorietta 5 in Makati. Aside from that, Ms Cory also announced that Ayala Malls will partner with Mr. World Philippines and will officially host the screenings of applicants at their malls.

2) L-R Arnold Vegafria (Chairman of Mr. World Philippines Search and Production), Cory Quirino, Rowena Tomeldan of Ayala Land and Mr. World Philippines 2012 Andrew Wolff

Our last representative, Andrew Wolff, who was hand-picked in 2012, donned the Philippine sash and won 1st Runner up in the Mr. World competition held in Kent, England. The competition is held every two years.

Because of Andrew’s success, Ms Cory is turning the search into a full-blown on-stage competition. She is hoping for 15 to 20 official candidates to vie for the Mr. World Philippines 2014 title. The winner will receive cash prizes, gift certificates, endorsements AND the chance to represent the Philippines in the Mr. World 2014 competition to be held in Torbay, London on June 15, 2014 !!!

“It is not a beauty pageant,” Andrew Wolff insists. He addss, “it’s also not about the prettiest face or the best 6-pack. It’s a competition that tests a man’s character, creativity, sincerety and ability to communicate. You have to be well-rounded.”

Apart from the above, Mr. World takes physical fitness seriously. It’s contestants have to face special challenges in the area of sports and even extreme sports. This is apart form challenges in style, talent and multimedia.

But what kind of man is Mr. World Philippines looking for?

Cory says, “all you have to do is look at Andrew Wolff’s character and you’ll know the kind of man we’re looking for. He must have a fiery spirit, with guts, brains and intellect. He can be full Pinoy or mixed, it doesn’t matter as long as he can represent the Philippines well and become the most desirable man in the world!”

Mr. World Philippines 2014 is open to all single men from ages 17 to 27 at least 5’9″ tall. Visit the Mr. World website here and the Facebook of Mr. World Philippines here. You can also get more information from the Miss World Philippines site here.

Screening for the 2014 competition begins after Holy Week. Coronation will be in the second week of May and will be telecast live. The official TV network partner and final dates of the Mr. World Philippines 2014 competition will be announced in the coming days so please visit ABQ for updates.

Judging at the Trash to Class Fashion Competition of Miss Philippines Earth 2014!

Sorry dear reader for this late update. Got busy with work then with cleaning house over the Holy Week break. I also had to take care of family things. In spite of it’s lateness, I hope you still appreciate this post…

Congratulations to the top 3 winners of Miss Philippines Earth 2014′s Trash to Class Fashion competition held at Patio Victoria in Intramuros last April 9, 2014! I had the honor of being one of the critic judges, thanks to MPE for the invite. I was instructed to be candid about my comments on the outfit but it was hard to nitpick; I ended up praising almost every outfit and girl that came out on stage. I’m now pinching myself for not being more forthcoming, but I promise to be tougher next time, aahaha!

Anyway, I also had a blast with my two co-judges – Eric Pineda and Nat Manilag who helped me along since it was my first time to be a critic judge in a fashion-based competition involving waste or recycled materials.

Winners of the Trash to Class Fashion Competition, Miss Philippines Earth 2014 - L-R Bianca Paz (Gapan), Daine Querrer (Tanauan) and Jammie Herrel (Cebu City)

Winners of the Trash to Class Fashion Competition, Miss Philippines Earth 2014 – L-R 2nd Runner-up: Bianca Paz (Gapan), Winner: Diane Querrer (Tanauan) and 1st Runner-up: Jamie Herrel (Cebu City)

All three girls above garnered high scores from me. I liked their outfits and felt that they all fit into the eco-theme of Miss Philippines Earth and yet at the same time were elegant looking. As for catwalk skills, all three girls did a stunning job, Diane Querrer in particular looked every inch the regal queen.

**********

Lets look at each of the Top 3 outfits:

BRONZE – Bianca Paz of Gapan City

Bianca Paz representing Gapan City

Bianca Paz representing Gapan City wins BRONZE in the Trash to Clash Fashion Competition of Miss Philippines Earth 2013

Bianca Paz gave us some Hollywood glamor when she stepped out in a cocktail dress made out of lambat (fishnets) and styrofoam plates. Loved the way the corset part made her cleavage go boom! Five over five tiaras!

Bianca is a pageant veteran with a stint in Bb. Pilipinas 2009. She also won 3rd Princess twice in Miss World Philippines, first in 2011 and then again in 2013. This time around in Miss Philippines Earth, I think she has a big chance of fulfilling her dream of becoming a national crown winner.

*****

SILVER – Jamie Herrell of Cebu City

 Jamie Herrell of Cebu City

Jamie Herrell of Cebu City

Unlike the other two winning Trash to Class outfits, it’s easy to tell what this one is made of! Jamie Herrell is wearing silvery plastic plates with a few plastic spoons poking out. It is something I imagine Lady Gaga wearing to someone’s kiddie party. This eco-dress just proves that keeping things simple and straightforward can win you a medal.

The lovely Jamie, if you don’t know yet, was a contestant in Miss Resorts World Manila 2013.

*****

GOLD – Diane Querrer of Tanauan City

Diane Querrer of Tanauan City

Diane Querrer of Tanauan City wins GOLD at the Trash to Class Fashion Competition of Miss Philippines Earth 2014

Looking at this picture you would never guess that Diane Querrer, who is representing Tanauan City, is wearing the very same things clogging our drainage systems in Metro Manila. White plastic bags, straws, kulambo and defective rubber mats! But even more astounding than that is Diane’s quick rebound from the embarrassing disqualification she had to face at another pageant several weeks ago. Read more about it here.

IMHO, Diane did the right thing and moved on fast. This is her second attempt, btw, at Miss Philippines Earth. She was a contestant in the year 2011.

Every now and then, it happens in pageants. The wrong winner is called or in this case, not all the winners were called!

In a funny faux pas, beauty queen Karla Henry, the emcee at the Press Presentation of Miss Philippines Earth 2014 failed to announce the 10th girl in the Miss Hana Top 10 list. She stopped at girl #9 – Bianca Paz of Gapan.

But the audience yelled out to correct her. After momentarily reviewing the script, she cracked a joke saying – “Paumanhin po, di ako magaling sa math… maganda lang ako.” (Sorry folks, I’m not good at math, I’m just pretty.)

Which drew much laughter from the crowd! We all know how smart you are grrrl! Smart AND funny!

Anyway, it turns out that Ross Misa of Makati (whom we remember well as the 1st Princess in Miss World Philippines 2012) was the 10th girl!

When she heard her name called I saw her heave a sigh of relief. And I don’t blame her; Hana Shampoo is the co-presentor of Miss Philippines Earth this year and would naturally pick the girls they think will place high in the pageant.

The Miss Hana Top 10 minus Ross Misa of Makati

Finally, the COMPLETE Miss Hanna Top 10 - L-R - Ross Misa of Makati, Jamie Herrel of Cebu City, Janelle Ty of Davao, Monique Manuel of Dinalupihan Bataan, Bianca Paz of Gapan, Diane Querrer of Tanauan, Angelie Crizelle Ocampo of Santa Rita Pampanga, Melanie Cristine Balagtas of Sydney Australia. Crystal Star Aberasturi of Liloan Cebu and Carmen Baena of Melbourne Australia

Finally, the COMPLETE Miss Hanna Top 10! Ross Misa of Makati is at the far left. After her are Jamie Herrel of Cebu City, Janelle Ty of Davao, Monique Manuel of Dinalupihan Bataan, Bianca Paz of Gapan, Diane Querrer of Tanauan, Angelie Crizelle Ocampo of Santa Rita Pampanga, Melanie Cristine Balagtas of Sydney Australia. Crystal Star Aberasturi of Liloan Cebu and Carmen Baena of Melbourne Australia

Later on, I got to chat with Ross Misa and she asked me if I saw her almost trip when her name was belatedly announced. I said that I certainly did! She must have been so relieved at hearing her name that she was literally thrown off balance. But she regained composure faster than you can say ‘Miriam Quiambao‘ and walked forward to join the 9 other Miss Hana Shampoo winners. WHEW!

Ross intimated to me that this will be her last time to join a beauty pageant. She’s already joined Bb. Pilipinas 2010 (she placed in the Top 10) and Miss World Philippines 2012 (1st Runner-up) so now she’s giving MPE a try but not really because she wants to. She says that her Mom is pushing her to try one more time.

Well, it will be a tough battle for Ross Misa with the caliber of beauties that MPE has this year however I wouldn’t be disappointed at all if she won. She’d make a great representative for our nation to the Miss Earth 2014.

After the Press Presentation at the poolside of Solaire, we all had lunch at Eclipse, one of the restaurants in the casino resort where we also got to hobnob with the 49 contestants of Miss Philippines Earth 2014. Well, it became an even prettier place with the 49 official candidates of Miss Philippines Earth 2014 parading around in their Ricky Abad bikinis! Here are the photos I took… the girls that stood out are highlighted in RED…   ENJOY!

Catherine Catbagan (Binalonan, Pangasinan) – Don’t underestimate this 24-year-old sexy Morena beauty; she is a charge nurse at Dagupan Doctor’s Villaflor Memorial Hospital!

Thessa Marie Saavedra (Camiling, Tarlac) – This fair lady is a registered nurse who discovered that pageants were her ‘thing’ after she placed 1st Runner up in a college beauty contest. She’s now 24 years old.

Monique Manuel (Dinalupihan, Bataan) – A second-timer at MPE, Monique is getting more attention than when she first joined in 2009. She entered the Top 10 then. I can see her placing even higher this time around with a strong possibility of entering the runners-up circle. Monique is a commercial model and host for TFC Pinoy Destinations. She’s 25 years old.

Bianca Paz (Gapan) – This standout beauty has joined national pageants several times, never winning the main title but usually placing very high. This is her first foray into MPE and I feel that this could finally be her crown. Fresh, relaxed and as tall as a tower, she would be a worthy winner. This 25-year-old pageant denizen is a fashion designer in her own right.

Marjorie Acuna (Gerona, Tarlac) -  I would love for her to be my doctor; Marjorie’s warm smile will surely make me feel better in seconds! Currently, she works as an Intern for the Tarlac Provincial Hospital. She’s 25 years old.

Ma. Teresa Ocampo (Laoag) – Can’t imagine why anyone would want to be as white as a vampire when you can be as deliciously dark as Ma. Teresa ! This 25-year-old MPE eco-warrior is a passionate theater actress.

Jenn Kristel Gonzales (Mariveles, Bataan) – I am captivated by the curves of Jenn – just look at how her back arches so effortlessly! Her warm and inviting smile will come in handy when the 20-year-old Tourism students graduates and starts working in that field.

Leslie Ann Pine (San Leonardo, Nueva Ecija) – One of the sweetest faces in this crop of MPE beauties, Leslie is a natural charmer. You’ll love the 20-year old business student even more when you discover that she left her studies and family in Santa Monica, California to come to Manila to study here.

Angelie Crizelle Ocampo (Sta. Rita , Pampanga) – When I scan a crowd of pageant contestants I always look for the faces that really stand out. Angelie Crizelle’s lovely visage was one of those that grabbed my eyes in this bevy of beauties! She’s also pretty hot when posing for the cam. The 20-year-old Kapampangan lass is a staffer of Senator Lito Lapid.

Mabel Joy Verceles (Vigan) – I love your hair flip Mabel Joy! This Ilocana titleholder has joined several provincial pageants and the training shows. She’s 22 years old and works as a Marketing Officer.

The Ten Eco-Warrior Beauties from Northern Luzon

The tall ones in this batch are Bianca Paz of Gapan and Sta. Rita, Pamapanga’s Angelie Crizelle Ocampo. As you can see they’re all wearing the same shoes so that gives us a better idea of their height. Although height seems to be not as crucial in winning pageants these recent years, it’s a major point of interest for serious pageant followers.
