Parul Shah has Best Abs in Early Swimsuit Shots of Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Girls!

Now that we have a final FINAL list (we hope) of contestants in Bb. Pilipinas 2014, ABQ can proceed with it’s scrutinization process. FYI, there is no such word as ‘scrutinization’ but I’m sure you totally get what I mean.

My ‘scrutinization’ thoughts below are based on the early swimsuit shots of the Top 40 contestants found on the official Facebook of Bb. Pilipinas:

Parul Shah

Parul Shah

Pageant followers will recognize this beauty, Parul Shah, as one of the Top 15 semi-finalists in last year’s Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant. She is back to give the pageant one more shot and based on this photo above I can clearly see that Parul Shah has the best body for Miss Universe purposes.

Her abs are extremely firm, legs evenly chiseled and arms well-defined but overall is still very feminine.  This is the kind of body that Americans love and scores high in Miss Universe. If I could bestow a special title on Parul, it would be Best Abs and Body.

But even if she carries the most competitive physique (IMHO) will she win the Bb. Pilipinas Universe title? This year’s crop is formidably gorgeous and the battle is no easier than it was last year. In fact, this might very well be the hardest-to-judge batch ever in the history of the pageant. Much will depend on how Parul Shah performs in the coming days.

MJ Lastimosa (left), Aiza Faeldonia (middle) and Hannah Ruth Sison (right)

Oh my golly, I can’t decide which among these sirens have the best curves but after much argument with myself, I have come to the conclusion that these three beauties have equally stunning curves and carry ideal beauty queen bodies. Pang-International or Supra ang level nila.

MJ Lastimosa (on the left) is back in Bb. Pilipinas for the third time. I think I like her look now better than when she competed two years ago and the year before that. There have been rumors that her body is ‘fixed’. Now let me defend her by saying that if the rumors are true, then she is like our beloved Venezuelan beauty queens who are almost always surgically changed. And such surgeries are not outlawed anyway so whatever the truth is, my eyes tell me that she’s got a winning body.

The girl in the middle, Aiza Faeldonia is actually a ‘recall girl’. No originally part of the Top 40, she got called back by Bb. Pilipinas after two contestants were dropped. But look at her long-ness! Her arms and torso stretch from here to eternity. Even her bellybutton is long! And I so love her tiny ribcage.

Hanah Ruth Sison, meantime, seems to be showing off her best asset. And how I just love it! Her beautiful derriere smiles upward to the heavens. And look at the perfect letter S that her body makes from shoulder to tailbone! Napaka-sexy niya talaga but not in a bastusin way. Hannah Ruth Sison, who was part of Bb. Pilipinas 2013 Gold Edition and was one of my wildcard choices then, is obviously back with a vengeance!

Angelique Celine de Leon (left) and Kenneth Santiago

Angelique Celine de Leon (left) and Kenneth Santiago

The next two girls that I like are Angelique Celine de Leon and Kenneth Santiago who have very different shapes yet both I find attractive!

Angelique (better known as Angee) has beautiful posture and gentle curves with a generous hip-line. This Media Relations Associate for Summit Media looks like she’s a corporal in the military with her powerful stance.

Kenneth meantime, might have a boy’s name but looks nothing like one! Her deep curves give her a wasp-like waistline.  Her limbs are sinuous and her small shoulder frame gives her a delicate aura.

Top Row – Joy Marie Gangan (left) and Janine Asanion. Bottom Row – Julian Aurine Flores (left), Vessica Sambo (middle) and Mae Liezel Ramos.

Joy Marie Gangan (top left), the farmer-girl who won ‘Best Asia Model’, a special award in the Best Model of the World 2012 competition is blessed to have the DNA that gives her body naturally beautiful curves. But I find her a little bit soft. I think she needs to build a little muscle tone. These days, it’s not enough to have a naturally beautiful shape. You need to work at improving it. Nevertheless, Joy Gangan is an amazing beauty and I have high hopes for her!

The last time we saw Janine Asanion (top right) was in Miss Philippines Earth 2013 representing San Marcelino.  Janine was in my Top 15 favorites and successfully entered the Top 10 on coronation night. She continues to capture my attention with that Ipanema tan of hers that fair girls like me would die for! Though she is slightly thick-waisted, the rest of her body flares out enough to make her look proportionally perfect. Swimsuit choice gets 5 Tiaras from me!

I can see that Julian Aurine Flores (bottom left) has a generous chest line, something that is highly favored in beauty pageants. I also like the way the hips of this college beauty queen zoom out then in.

Vessica Sambo (bottom middle), the current Reyna ng Bulacan did not win Best in Swimsuit during her provicial pageant for nothing! She’s got a lovely body with hips that curve out a little too dangerously. Partnered with the classic shoulders of a living mannequin, she’s got a great physique!

Mae Liezel Ramos (bottom right), who was Miss Camarines Sur 2010, has that slightly odd body with wiry straight shoulders and praying mantis arms but looking at the bigger picture, I just like her body. Her pose is cute yet her stance gives off a sporty feel. Me likey!

Yvethe Marie A. Santiago (left) and Pia Wurtzbach (right)

Yvethe Marie A. Santiago (left) and Pia Wurtzbach (right)

Yvethe Marie Santiago (left) our Miss Bicolandia 2012 has gentle curves and an overall look that screams – “I am a beauty queen!” I featured her before in this blog when she competed in a pageant abroad called Miss World University in 2010. She took home the Best in National Costume award.

As for Pia Wurtzbach, I would have put her higher in my list but I am disappointed over the odd fit of her swimsuit in this photo. It looks like her top is a little too tight and then her bottom is a little too loose – you can see the wrinkles on the cloth. But this does not diminish my feelings that the girl who placed 1st Runner-up in Bb. Pilipinas last year could very well win one of the crowns THIS year! I can see her as Bb. Pilipinas International, perhaps even Universe. It would be disappointing to see her win Tourism but if she wins that title and competes in China, I know she will bowl them Chinese judges over!

L-R - Ednornance Agustin, Nichole Marie Manalo, Emma Tiglao and Shauna Indra Curran

L-R – Ednornance Agustin, Nichole Marie Manalo, Emma Tiglao and Shauna Indra Curran

Can I just say that it’s quite annoying for me that Ednornance Agustin (left) does not have a white background photo like the rest of the girls? Makes me wonder about the circumstances of her joining. But no matter, I love her shoulder bones but find her arms just a shade too thin. She can afford to gain some density in her biceps and triceps. But the rest of her looks fine and dandy to me! FYI,  Ednornance competed in Mutya ng Pilipinas 2013 but did not place.

Nichole Marie Manalo (in dark blue), who comes from a family of top ranking beauty queens has the kind of generous hip curve that I like similar to that of Janine Tugonon our Bb. Pilipinas Universe two years ago. A little bit more trimming and Nichole is très parfait!!!

Emma Tiglao (in pink) meantime could do the opposite and gain some poundage. I can see her ribs. But otherwise, her natural shape is very comely. She’s also leveled up in terms of styling since she first competed in Mutya ng Pilipinas 2012 where she finished well as 1st Runner-up.

Shauna Indra Curran, Miss Baguio City 2011, has a nice fulsome figure. I like the way she stands as she shows off her best! The half-Scot, half-Ifugao beauty is quite the fitness freak: she loves hiking and has even conquered Mt. Pulag. The last time I saw here was when she was hosting and modeling in Runway for Hope 2013.

Thoughts on the Talent Show of Bb. Pilipinas 2014…

$

For Bb. Pilipinas hopefuls the question is usually this: If I join the Talent Show will my performance help me gain more attention and perhaps a better chance at one of the crowns?

My guess is this: you might get the extra attention but not not really extra points for the crown.

But I do believe that if you can REALLY perform and wow an audience, it’s worth the effort. Why? Because Bb. Pilipinas head Stella Marquez Araneta is almost always a judge at the Talent Show and we all know that she is very involved in choosing winners come coronation night. So if you can shine in her eyes, then go!

What about candidates who don’t really have scintillating talents but choose to perform anyway? Well, they do so at their own risk. In my opinion, if you don’t have anything great to show then don’t. Besides, we’ve had contestants who abstained from the Talent segment but still won titles.

Now what is my overall assessment of Bb. Pilipinas batch 2014′s performance in the Talent Show?

IMHO, previous batches were better but out of the 12 contestants who performed in the activity center of Farmer’s Plaza this year, there were 3 standouts – Hannah Ruth Sison and Angelique de Leon who are my top 2 favorites followed closely by MJ Lastimosa.

Bb. #27 Hannah Ruth Sison (left) sang For the First Time in Forever from Frozen while Bb. #31 Angelique de Leon danced to a medley of Beyonce songs

Bb. #27 Hannah Ruth Sison (left) sang For the First Time in Forever from Frozen while Bb. #31 Angelique de Leon showed us her street-dance moves to a medley of Beyonce songs

Out of the 12 contestants who chose to compete, these two beauties above had the most applause-worthy performances; Bb. #27 Hannah Ruth Sison, who sang like a schoolgirl in love and Bb. #31 Angelique de Leon who did an ass-busting hiphop dance number.

Hannah Ruth Sison, who is a repeater from last year’s Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant, sang a sweetly giddy version of the song “For the First Time in Forever” from Frozen. She might not be a trained professional, but Hannah has a lovely singing voice and can hit her notes well. She covered the stage like a Broadway performer but with the unrehearsed rawness of a budding talent. And I can’t help but mention that among all the girls she had the most beautiful set of thick tresses that trailed down her shoulders.

Angelique de Leon meantime did a fierce street dance number to a medley of Beyonce songs, complete with the crotch-grabbing action that RnB performers seem to enjoy doing. An expressive dancer, Angelique punctuated her moves with tough-girl sneers and an occasional artistic grimace. She slid across the stage showing off not just her sharp groove but her well-sculpted arms as well.

Between Hannah and Angelique I’d give Hannah the edge simply because her ‘girly’ performance is more suited to the beauty queen image. But don’t get me wrong; I really enjoyed Angelique’s dance because it was unconventional and done really well.  I just wonder what was going on in the mind of Madame Stella (she was present as a judge) when Angelique would grab her crotch…  SMA is famous for her conservative approach but has been known to be unpredictable in her choices.

Bb. #25 MJ Lastimosa performs the 'La Jota de Paragua'

Bb. #25 MJ Lastimosa performs the ‘La Jota Paragua’

The contestant who got the loudest cheers from the audience was MJ Lastimosa, Bb. #25. This is MJ’s third time to compete in Bb. Pilipinas and the girl has accumulated a slew of followers. I wouldn’t be surprised if pageant fans would vote her the most loved non-winner in Bb. Pilipinas. However, ‘non-winner’ might not be the best term to describe MJ since she did place as runner-up in 2011.

Anyway, I loved MJ Lastimosa’s performance of a dance called ‘La Jota Paragua’ which was introduced to the Philippines by Spaniard settlers hundreds of years ago. Paragua happens to be the old name of Palawan. I am 99% sure that MJ strategically chose this dance to please Stella Marquez Araneta who is Columbian and married to a Spanish Filipino scion.

I must say that MJ’s deft handling of her ‘manton’ or shawl as she spun and stamped around the stage was very engaging. Her red gown also deserved to win best costume out of all the girls who competed in the Talent Show.

Here are photos of the other contestants who presented their skills in the Bb. Pilipinas Talent Show 2014:

Bb. Pilipinas finally presented to the press it’s 40 Official contestants in this year’s beauty tilt. The event was held today, Feb. 19, 2014, at the grand ballroom in Sofitel Hotel, formerly the Philippine Plaza. And from what this blogger witnessed, we’ve got another strong batch of contestants and more worthy beauties than crowns to give away.

Here are my thoughts on the first five contestants. The names highlighted in RED are my top favorites. Those in GREEN I find intriguing.

Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Contestants 1 to 5

Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Contestants 1 to 5 (but they’re in reverse order with #5 being on the far left and #1 being on the far right)

Bb. #1 Julian Aurine Flores - 23 yo - Manila

Bb. #1 Julian Aurine Flores – 23 yo – Manila

#1 Julian Aurine Flores’ biggest asset is her charming face. Then there’s her beautifully proportioned body and hint of sculpted abs. I’ve noticed that Bb. Pilipinas often picks a real stunner to be the opening girl but if you ask those who’ve experienced being contestant #1, it’s not easy. The big worry is that judges might forget you by the time they are done with the last contestant. But from what I’ve seen, that won’t be much of a problem for this Hotel and Travel Management graduate. Her kittenish beauty is simply unforgettable!

*****

#3 Mary Ainjely P. Manalo - 21 yo - Pasay

Bb. #2 Mary Ainjely P. Manalo – 21 yo – Pasay

Candidate #2 Mary Ainjely P. Manalo wore a fringed bikini that suited her slight frame perfectly, enhancing her curves. A pert beauty with a sharp look, Ainjely recently became a registered nurse but has forsworn her work in order to chase her dream of becoming a beauty queen.

*****

Bb. #3 Joanna Angelica M. Romero - 23 yo - Bicol

Bb. #3 Joanna Angelica M. Romero – 23 yo – Bicol

Making it as an official Bb. Pilipinas candidate is a big thing for hotelier Joanna Angelica M. Romero, our candidate #3. Although she has had to put her Sales and Marketing job on hold, joining the pageant will hopefully take her one step closer to her dream of becoming a national beauty queen. What I love about Joanna is her flawless white skin!

Bb. #4 Parul Shah - 25 yo - Pangasinan

Bb. #4 Parul Shah – 25 yo – Pangasinan

When I saw Parul Shah last year at the send off of Bea Santiago to the Miss International 2013, she had intimated to me that she was going to try Bb. Pilipinas one more time. Last year, Parul Shah made it into the Top 15 but to my disappointment, did not win any of the crowns as I had felt she deserved. Perhaps it wasn’t her time then…

What do I like about Parul Shah? First things first, her smile! She’s got that beaming beauty queen smile which I also saw in Shamcey Supsup when I first laid my eyes on her. Next, I simply adore her exotic looks which she inherited from her Indian father. Then there’s her unbelievable body with the tightest abs and the sexiest derriere making her a ravishing thing to look at from the front AND back. And when she works the catwalk, she knows how to churn those hips!

Parul is also well-educated – she studied in Dubai and Baguio, is a registered nurse and speaks 5 languages – Hindi, Arabic, Gujarati, Ilocano, Filipino and English.

Bb. #5 Hanna Mariz D. dela Guerra - 21 yo - Mandaluyong

Bb. #5 Hanna Mariz D. dela Guerra – 21 yo – Mandaluyong

Really pretty in person and in photos, contestant #5 Hanna Mariz D. dela Guerra showed off a magnificently ripped body on stage. I just found her hair a little too poofy but apart from that, she’s good to go! I know it’s kind of hard to believe that such a beauty can be geeky: Hanna is an Information Systems grad who works as a technological consultant. She also happens to be Miss Mandaluyong 2011.

Bb. #6 Anabel Christine G. Tia - 25 yo - Misamis Occidental

Bb. #6 Anabel Christine G. Tia – 25 yo – Misamis Occidental

It was brave of candidate #6 Anabel Christine G. Tia to style her hair in a high bun while wearing a bikini. The current trend is to have your tresses tumbling all over your shoulders during swimsuit presentations. But Anabel Tia has always been the kind of girl who likes to take calculated risks. Even joining Bb. Pilipinas was a big dare for the art teacher/restaurateur who flew all the way to Manila just to try her luck in the pageant!

*****

Bb. #7 Aiza Faeldonia - 24 yo - Sultan Kudarat

Bb. #7 Aiza Faeldonia – 24 yo – Sultan Kudarat

Two things about candidate #7 Aiza Faeldonia that give her the edge above the rest: her fabulous cheekbones and her violin-shaped body. While she is pretty when she smiles, she turns into royalty when she closes her lips and drops her eyes. At 5’9″ this HRM grad is a towering presence on stage and a formidable opponent for anyone who hopes to win a crown in this year’s pageant.

Bb. #8 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach - 24 yo - Cagayan de Oro

Bb. #8 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach – 24 yo – Cagayan de Oro

Hot to the millionth power! Contestant #8 Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach is BACH! And she’s hotter than ever as you can see above. This is take 2 for Pia Wurtzbach who placed as 1st Runner-up in last year’s Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant. A positive thinker, Pia did not despair when she left the stage without major title in 2013. Instead, she made up her mind to give it one more shot.

The actress/model would indeed make a great representative for the Philippines if she wins one of the 4 crowns up for grabs – she’s got a picture-perfect smile, curves in the right places and the smarts to handle the toughest pageant question!

*****

Bb. #9 Joy Antonette Diaz - 22 yo - Dagupan

Bb. #9 Joy Antonette Diaz – 22 yo – Dagupan

Don’t let the delicate aura of contestant #9 Joy Antonette Diaz fool you. She’s tougher that you think. With a degree in Political Science and plans to pursue Law, Joy aims to become a family lawyer in future. But before she finishes her education she wants to slug it out in this court of beauties. While she traces her roots to Dagupan, Joy grew up in the US. She is back in the Philippines to learn more about Filipino culture. Watch out girls, this one is a beauty with lots of brains!

****

Bb. #10 Shauna Indra Salina Curran

Bb. #10 Shauna Indra Salina Curran – 22 yo – Baguio

Contestant #10 Shauna Indra Salina Curran seems to be awfully proud of her ethnicity – you’ll often catch her bragging about being half-Scottish and half-Igorot. How intriguing, doncha think? The first time I saw her was during “Runway for Hope 2013″ a fashion show that raised funds for Yolanda survivors. Shauna was hosting and modeling at the time.

The one thing I really like about this girl is her very interesting face. An exquisite beauty that has yet to blossom. A rose bud whose petals are still closed tight. As for her physique, I think she can work on shedding some excess weight in order to be more competitive in pageants. If Janine Tugonon could do it, I’m sure the lovely Shauna can too!

I also love her gift for hosting – she’s a radio jock! During the Talent Show of Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Shauna Curran gave us a taste of her hosting skills as well as her singing! Click here to see more…

And from what this blogger witnessed, we’ve got another strong batch of contestants and more worthy beauties than crowns to give away.

Here are my thoughts on contestants 11 to 15. The names highlighted in RED are my top favorites. Those in GREEN I find intriguing.

Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Contestants No. 11 to 15

Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Contestants No. 11 to 15

Bb. #11 Laura Victoria Lehmann - 20 yo - Makati

Bb. #11 Laura Victoria Lehmann – 20 yo – Makati

#11 Laura Victoria Lehmann‘s official Bb. Pilipinas bio says that she has some 125 stitches on her body being a member of the Philippines softball team. But pray tell, where is the proof of that? Look at how smooth her skin is! Perhaps the scars are all hiding under her tiny purple bikini? Oh, I’m just teasing! I’m sure Laura has had painful experiences with needle to skin but is blessed with an epidermis that heals perfectly.

Contestant #11 is another example of beauty and brains – before joining Bb. Pilipinas she was busy chasing three degrees in the US: Psychology, Neuro Science and Spanish Studies.

Bb. #12 Sarah Jireh C. Asido

Bb. #12 Sarah Jireh C. Asido – 23 yo – Balagtas, Bulacan

Not all Filipina beauties are petite and thin. Contestant #12 Sarah Jireh C. Asido proves that we can be tall and shapely as well! What I really like about Sarah is her open smile which says, “I’m proud to be Bulakenya!” And, for a Social Studies teacher in high school, she walks pretty damn well. Kudos to her trainers!

Sarah Jireh Asido participated in the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Talent Show; click here to see what talent she presented.

She also represented Quezon City in Miss Earth Philippines 2013, click here to see more.

*****

Bb. #13 Kris Tiffany M. Janson

Bb. #13 Kris Tiffany M. Janson – 24 yo – Cebu

I first noticed just how striking #13 Kris Tiffany Janson was at the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Talent Show where the pretty financial analyst was wearing a belly dancing outfit accessorized by a gold headband trimmed with coins . If you click here to read my story on that, you’ll see a photo of her with the most breath-taking expression! She was holding up a red veil and giving the audience this imperious ‘you-are-in-trouble’ look. But the ones who are truly in trouble are her rivals in the pageant. This Miss Cebu 2009 titleholder seems serious about her campaign for a crown!

*****

Bb. #14 Emma Mary F. Tiglao

Bb. #14 Emma Mary F. Tiglao – 19 yo – Mabalacat, Pampanga

I am completely intrigued by the longness of contestant #14 Emma Mary F. Tiglao. She is a pleasure to watch on stage. I think of giraffes and gazelles on the move on an African tundra. Speaking of creatures, Emma is an animal lover and a former Miss Zoomanity winner. I think it’s her up-tilted catlike eyes that make her face so interesting to look at. Even her name Emma Tiglao has a beauty queen ring to it.

Click here to see what she performed at the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Talent Show!

A very intriguing beauty indeed, I came across this tourism student first in Mutya ng Pilipinas 2012. She was contestant #24 then (click here to see) and was ‘neneng-nene‘ with her cute be-dimpled smile. In spite of her extreme youth then, Emma placed high in that pageant – 1st Runner-up.

But look at her now! She has managed to shed her childhood and bloom into an alluring beauty!

*****

Bb. #15 Kimverlyn O. Suiza -

Bb. #15 Kimverlyn O. Suiza – 25 yo – Marikina

I think the greatest asset of contestant #15 Kimverlyn O. Suiza is that there’s no one that looks like her. Her uniqueness combined with her queenly attractiveness makes her unforgettable in the eye of the pageant observer. Being tall and very fair adds to her solitary beauty and because of the aforementioned, I’m almost certain she’ll make it into the semi-finals, at the very least.

A former TV producer for a top-rating show, Kimverlyn cut her teeth in last year’s Miss Philippines Earth where she represented Nagcarlan and eventually placed as an elemental winner – Miss Philippines Air 2013 (pageant fans consider that to be 1st Runner-up).  This blogger was able to predict her placement at the time.

A formidable presence in Bb Pilipinas 2104, let she how Kimverlyn Suiza fares as she competes with 39 other opponents for the chance at one of the 4 titles!

Bb. #16 Zahara Mae O. Soriano - 19 yo - Pasig

Bb. #16 Zahara Mae O. Soriano – 19 yo – Pasig

Contestant #16 Zahara Mae O. Soriano bears a strong resemblance to Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1993 Dindi Gallardo so it’s no surprise that Dindi happens to be her favorite beauty queen ever! I first saw this pretty Tourism graduate at the Long Gown event of Slimmer’s World Miss Bikini Philippines 2013 where I was a judge. She was contestant #24 then. I hear that she also won the Best in Swimsuit honor at the Miss Resorts World Manila last year. Zahara’s beauty queen looks, flawless skin and bikini-worthy bod are her strongest suits!

Bb. #17 Diana B. Arevalo

Bb. #17 Diana B. Arevalo – 25 yo – Calapan, Oriental Mindoro

She’s once… twice… three times a Binibini! And I love her!

Diana B. Arevalo is a 3-peater in Bb. Pilipinas. She was contestant #5 in 2011 and contestant #11 in 2011 and now she’s contestant #17. Looks like her number is going up! In her two previous attempts she entered the semi-finals so I’m certainly hoping she can, at the very least, match that and enter the semi-finals this year.

Her best asset is the years of experience she’s had in the pageant circuit as well as her work as an OFW for a major hotel in Macau. Having a contestant who knows what life is like for the hundreds of thousands of Filipinos working abroad and sending money back home shows that Bb. contestants are truly from different sectors of society.

On the physical side, I’m liking her slim but shapely form and pert, buck-tooth look. She’s restyled her hair and I totally approve!

Bb. #18 Ellore Noelle Punzalan

Bb. #18 Ellore Noelle Punzalan -  26 yo – Las Pinas

Contestant #18 Ellore Noelle Punzalan is back for another shot at the Bb. Pilipinas title.  She was contestant #22 last year and entered the Top 15 apart from garnering the Bulletin Readers’ Choice award then. The last time this blogger saw her was at the Runway for Hope 2013 fashion show where she wore a Jontie Martinez gown.

Although Ellore Punzalan was not a favorite of mine in last year’s Bb., she has risen in my eyes with her much improved walk and styling. The legs of this med student rival those of an antelope and I marvel at her lean midsection. And she’s got this way of smiling that speaks a thousand words. I’m certain she going to give it her all since she’s already 26 and nearing her retirement age in pageant competition. You go girl!

Bb. #19 Mae Liezel J. Ramos

Bb. #19 Mae Liezel J. Ramos – 23 yo – Camarines Sur

This charming Filipina beauty is no pageant virgin. Contestant #19 Mae Liezel J. Ramos has been competing since her teens and holds the Miss Kaogma Festival/Miss Camarines Sur 2010 title. She’s also placed as runner-up in several province pageants and was an official candidate in Miss World Philippines 2011.

Her Pinay beauty and long anaconda-like legs are the first things that grab my attention. I also love it that she’s an achiever with a degree in nursing who is studying to be an Internist.

Bb. 20 Kenneth Santiago

Bb. # 20 Kenneth Santiago – 21 yo – Nueva Ecija

Being called ‘Ken’ yet looking like Barbie is a blessing for contestant#20, Kenneth Santiago! Chances are, it’ll be the first question asked by judges during the closed-door interview and if she’s smart, Kenneth will use it as a chance to warm up to them. She could get extra valuable points that way.

So why is she called Kenneth? Because her Dad wanted a boy when she was born. But looking at her now, I wouldn’t want anything or anyone else!

A Pinay beauty in the 2014 Bb. collection, Kenneth Santiago has a pleasing visage and an endearing smile. She’s also a sharp businesswoman who has been able to establish a shoe business by selling her designs online and in stores across the city.

Candidates 21 to 25: Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Press Presenation

Bb. Pilipinas finally presented to the press it’s 40 Official contestants in this year’s beauty tilt. The event was held on Wednesday, Feb. 19, 2014, at the grand ballroom in Sofitel Hotel, formerly the Philippine Plaza. And from what this blogger witnessed, we’ve got another strong batch of contestants and more worthy beauties than crowns to give away.

Here are my thoughts on contestants 21 to 25. The names highlighted in RED are my top favorites. Those in GREEN I find intriguing.

Bb. Pilipinas 2014 contestants 21 to 25

Bb. Pilipinas 2014 contestants 21 to 25

Bb. #21 Racquel D. Kabigting

Bb. #21 Racquel D. Kabigting – 22 yo – Mariveles, Bataan

Contestant #21 Racquel D. Kabigting is the Amazonian in this year’s Bb. Pilipinas batch of beauties. The civil engineering student is head and eyes above the other 39 girls with her 6-foot frame and I’m expecting her to get extra points for it too! Her height is not just useful for pageant competition but also for search and rescue work. Racquel is a member of the Bataan Rescue Unit and can give you CPR in a heartbeat.

Bb. #22 Mary Ann Bianca G. Guidotti

Bb. #22 Mary Ann Bianca G. Guidotti – 24 yo – Taguig

Supporters and fans of contestant #22 say that Mary Ann Bianca G. Guidotti is perfect for the Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2014 crown because apart from her fair beauty and 5’10″ whip-like body, Marianne speaks Portuguese. That’s the language of Brazil where the Miss Universe 2014 will be held. I can already imagine this degree holder in European studies wowing local Brazilians with her fluent Portuguese if she indeed goes to Miss U. But is the ability to speak Portuguese going to give her the edge above the other beauties in Binibini Batch 2014? We’ll have to wait and see on coronation night, March 30, 2014!

Bb. #23 Nichole Marie R. Manalo

Bb. #23 Nichole Marie R. Manalo -  24 yo – Paranaque

For Pinoy pageant fanatics, #23 Nichole Marie R. Manalo is royalty! She is directly related to 3 national beauty queens: Miss International Philippines 1968 Nini Ramos, Bb. Pilipinas World 2002 Katherine Ann Manalo and Bb. Pilipinas Universe 2009, Pamela Bianca Manalo. Even her mother, the former Norma Ramos was the first to win the Miss Caloocan crown in 1970. Whoa! What a pedigree. The envy of all beauty queen dreamers!

mother, the former Norma Ramos, was the first Miss Caloocan titleholder in 1970. – See more at: http://www.malaya.com.ph/business-news/entertainment/nichole-manalo-follows-footsteps-her-sisters#sthash.0eyxZUb0.dpuf

But will her pedigree have a bearing on what the judges think? I’d really hate to see her walk off stage without a crown come March 30. But the competition is stiff, pedigree or not, so Nichole can’t rest on her laurels; she’s got to outshine them all or… well… I don’t even want to go there!

As for me, I find Nichole Manalo to be a riveting beauty with her harp-like curves, flawless skin and feminine appeal!

*****

Bb. #24 Ednornance Agustin

Bb. #24 Ednornance Agustin – 23 yo – Davao

What an odd name. Ednornance. Sounds like a noun or a state of being. Well, more like a state of angelic being if you ask me! This dark angel is truly intriguing, appealing and mesmerizing. I love her long-ness, her wonderfully tanned skin, the tilt in her almond eyes…  I could go on and on!

But let me tell you about the first time I saw Ednornance Agustin. It was at the screening of Mutya ng Pilipinas 2013 where the freelance model made the cut as candidate #23. I loved her head shot in that pageant! Although she was unplaced, she performed well and I’m glad to see her back on the pageant stage!

*****

Bb. 25 Mary Jean Lastimosa

Bb. 25 Mary Jean Lastimosa – 26 yo – North Cotabato/Davao

In this particular competition, contestant #25 Mary Jean “MJ” Lastimosa doesn’t smile just for the sake of smiling; she smiles with the freedom of someone who has come to terms with painful loss. In the year 2011 MJ was 2nd Runner up in Bb. Pilipinas. When she joined again in 2012 many expected her to win but alas, she never went beyond Top 12. I was saddened by her loss so much that I wrote a lament for her.

But lets leave all that and focus on the positive – MJ Lastimosa is back for one more shot at Bb. Pilipinas Universe crown but she also qualifies for the Tourism International and the Supranational as well. At 26 she has aged out for International. I can see her winning Universe with her bombshell body and brilliantly white smile but she’s got an uphill battle with rivals like Pia Wurtzbach, Parul Shah, Joy Gangan, to name a few.

As for Tourism International, if she wins that, I know that she’ll knock out the judges in China with her law-breaking waistline and hopefully, they’ll be wanting to claim her instead of our islands, LOL! Even for Supranational, MJ could be a worthy rep and successor to Mutya Datul and even give us a back to back win. I really do hope to see this girl crying for joy on coronation night…

Bb. Pilpinas 2014 Contestants 26 to 30

Bb. Pilpinas 2014 Contestants 26 to 30

Bb. #26 Hanna Sheena I. Manuel

Bb. #26 Hanna Sheena I. Manuel – 22 yo – Tuguegarao

Contestant #26 Hanna Sheena Manuel comes to the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 beauty pageant armed with a title: Bb. Cagayan Turismo 2013. This financial management student has an interesting look, on the ‘artistahin‘ side. I liked her styling during the Presscon but when they poof her hair up it makes her look odd – like a young girl with old lady hair. I prefer her hair to be flatter on the crown with body as the tresses tumble down her shoulders, She’s got a really pretty face with lots of feminine appeal, the youthful kind, so please keep her away from anything that’ll make her look older. Other than that, I think Sheena is a wild thang!

*****

Bb. #27 Hannah Ruth Sison

Bb. #27 Hannah Ruth Sison – 25 yo – Makati

What a relief it was to see contestant #27 Hannah Ruth Sison on stage at the Presscon. For awhile, we were all worried that she was going to have to back out due to her current endorsement with Globe Telecom. The problem is this: Araneta Coliseum (the home venue of Bb. Pilipinas) is allied with Smart so closely that the Coliseum has been renamed the Smart Araneta Coliseum. Smart is of course the #1 competitor of Globe.

But I am SOOOO thankful that all companies involved have pushed aside their rights in view of the greater good because Hannah Ruth Sison might just be one of our next queens with the way she is performing in the pageant.

This is actually her 2nd time to join (she was contestant #19 last year) and I really believe that the reason she didn’t do well (she didn’t place at all) was because the multimedia teacher was overshadowed and out-maneuvered by Bea Rose Santiago. They could pass for sisters but Bea had far more experience and could work the stage much better. To make matters worse, they were assigned consecutive numbers so Hannah Ruth Sison was stuck in the shadow of a winner.

But 2014 might be Hannah’s year to outshine others. We could see her vindicated. I can see the International crown on her head, as worthy successor to Bea Rose who won the title last year and went on to win on the international level in Japan. Of course this is just how I feel. Lets see if I match the judges final verdict come March 30, coronation night!

Bb. #28 Carla Jenina Cabrera Lizardo

Bb. #28 Carla Jenina Cabrera Lizardo – 24 yo – Pasig

It was really good to see contestant #28 Carla Lizardo on stage after that big scare. What scare you say? Well, she did not make the cut as an official Top 40 contestant but then two days later Bb. Pilipinas called her up asking her to come back because two contestants had to step down, reportedly due to height issues. It must have been a jaw-dropping surprise for this former varsity badminton player to be called back!

Now that Carla Lizardo back in the game, let’s look at her strengths – Carla has solid pageant experience winning Mutya ng Pilipinas Intercontinental in 2010 and placing in the Top 12 of Miss World Philippines 2012. She’s got a great body paired with fabulously silky skin. And she’s no airhead; Carla’s a journalist and anchor for PTV4.

My only beef is this – her stylist has to stop putting her hair up in a bun. They also need to lessen her eye make-up because it takes away from her natural beauty. IMHO, a softer look with hair falling in swirling dark clouds would be the ideal look for this hottie!

*****

Bb . #29 Krischelle DG Halili

Bb . #29 Krischelle DG Halili – 23 yo – Tarlac

Hm. She makes me think of Athena Imperial, our Miss Philippines Earth 2011. Or sometimes actress Eula Valdez. Either way, contestant #29 is Krischelle DG Halili has a striking face like her two look-a-likes. Oh, I just have to say that the DG in her name is intriguing. Does anyone know what it stands for?

Anyway, KC (as she is fondly called) is a UST beauty taking up medicine after finishing a degree in nursing. She has a budding gift for writing, see for yourself on her Tumblr Blog. But I wish she’d find time to write more stuff. Her most charming feature are her expansive eyes that glow like dark scarabs in the night.

*****

Bb. #30 Joy Marie Gangan

Bb. #30 Joy Marie Gangan

Built like a doll, contestant #30 Joy Marie Gangan is one of the most competitive girls in this year’s batch. She’s tall, stunning, shapely and knows how to work a stage to her advantage. She’s also an experienced pageant winner having represented the Philippines in the Best Model of the World 2012 which was held in Turkey. Joy Gangan went home with the Top Model special award.

Another advantage: this lithe lass is only 19 years old. She has years of productiveness ahead of her! If she doesn’t grab a crown this year, there’ll be time for winning in the future. But at the same time, she shouldn’t be an overconfident hare because there’s no better time to win than now.

On more thing. This stunner from Isabela grew up plain and simple as a farmer girl in the province. Her rags to beauty story is a powerful pageant asset but Joy Gangan needs to learn how to be more loquacious like her kababayan Mutya Datul. She doesn’t have to learn perfect English; all she needs is to learn how to express her heart and mind as sincerely as possible. I can see Joy taking over the Bb. Supranational title from Mutya, they seem to come from the same mold. But she has to overcome her shyness and start roaring like the lioness that she is.

Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Contestants 31 to 35

Bb. #31 Angelique Celine I. de Leon

Bb. #31 Angelique Celine I. de Leon – 23 yo – Mandaluyong

#31 Angelique Celine I. de Leon (how she reminds me of our 2013 queen Janine Tugonon! ) comes to the Bb. Pilipinas pageant as an accomplished young woman. She has held post as an SK Kagawad, was a gold medalist in the discus throw and was once 180 lbs but found the resolve to lose weight. And now, this is what she looks like!

The media relations associate is also a gifted hip-hop dancer; she showed off her moves at the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Talent Show, complete with the traditional crotch-grabbing that mark such performances. (I am outwardly scandalized but secretly delighted by this, LOL!)

I think her best asset apart from the above-mentioned would be her fierce determination to win which you can see in every step she takes.

*****

Bb. #32 Jeslyn Santos

Bb. #32 Jeslyn Santos – 21 yo – Hagonoy, Bulacan

What a pretty face she is! But Jeslyn Santos, #32 is not just that. She’s a broadcomm grad and a volleyball silver medalist. Height-wise (she’s somewhere between 5’8″ and 5’9″) Jeslyn fits the beauty queen mold. She’s also got good experience in competition: she is the winner of the Bb. Bulacan State University and placed as a runner up in both the Lakambini ng Bulacan 2011 and the Reyna ng Bulacan pageant in 2013.

While Jeslyn has the goods, her challenge will be how to outshine the pageant veterans who seem to be dominating in this year’s contest. The good news is Bb. doesn’t necessarily favor repeaters or winners from other franchises so this could be Jeslyn’s chance to shine!

Click here to see Jeslyn Santos at the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Talent Show!

*****

Bb. #33 Gabrielle Erika Tilokani

Bb. #33 Gabrielle Erika Tilokani – 22 yo – Mandaluyong

Although she doesn’t really look like former Bb. Pilipinas International 2010 Krista Kliener, contestant #33 Gabrielle Erika Tilokani reminds me or her in an odd way. Perhaps they have the same aura or style? I’ve heard pageant fans call Gabe, who is Fil-Indian, an ‘unconventional’ beauty, whatever they mean by that, but Gabe looks like a fighter to me and will give it her all to win or at the very least, place high. We saw her last compete on the Mutya ng Pilipinas stage in 2011 where she did well enough to enter the Top 10 alongside Bea Rose Santiago. She also placed as a runner-up in Miss Mandaluyong 2009.

Click here to see what Gabrielle Tilokani did for her segment in the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Talent Show!

*****

Bb. #34 Leonalyn D. dela Cruz

Bb. #34 Leonalyn D. dela Cruz

Style her in any way and contestant #34 Leonalyn D. dela Cruz will look fabulous! I think that’s one major key to being successful as a pageant competitor – the gift (or ability) to look great in any type of styling. What’s also exciting about Leonalyn is that she’s is accomplished in her own right. She is a CPA, works as an auditor and takes time to teach at a university. Add to that, she’s currently studying her Masters in business administrating and even hopes to study law after that. But for now, she’s dropped that part of her life to pursue her dream of becoming a beauty queen.

*****

#35 Yvethe Marie A. Santiago

#35 Yvethe Marie A. Santiago

I first came across this gorgeous gal, #35 Yvethe Marie A. Santiago, when she competed in Korea in the World Miss University 2010, a competition for college students. She won the Best in National Costume honor. I blogged about that and you can check it out in this post. Her other major pageant achievement is winning Miss Bicolandia 2012.

I love this girl but sometimes find her make-up too thick, specially around the eyes. Yvethe’s greatest asset is her youthful looks that shine naturally so, IMHO, she can do with eyes that are not so dark. Although she is less polished than the pageant repeaters, Yvethe is shows lots of promise. With the right styling, more oomph and deft handling of questions, she may just pull the rug right from under us.

Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Contestants 36 to 40

Bb. #36 Krystal Alonday

Bb. #36 Krystal Alonday – 21 yo – Paombong, Bulacan

I have always found #36 Krystal Alonday completely alluring. The first time I saw her was a few years back at the press presentation of Miss Earth Philippines 2012 which was held in MOA. In this blog post I said that she reminded me of Venus Raj. Krystal Alonday was representing her hometown Paombong, Bulacan at the time. Although she didn’t place in the pageant, she found a place in my heart and was one of my favorites.

Her last job before taking the leap into Bb. Pilipinas 2014 was for an international bank. I love her dusky, understated beauty. And it’s refreshing to see someone who doesn’t over-perform when on the catwalk. Digging a little deeper, I found out that she takes ministry seriously and volunteers as teacher for street children in her province. This lovely Bulakenya has also won two local titles – Mutya ng Paombong 2010 and Bb. Bulacan World 2011.

*****

Bb. #37 Vanessa N. Saliba

Bb. #37 Vanessa N. Saliba

Contestant #37 Vanessa Saliba was one of the pretty faces that used to grace Wiltime Bigtime on TV. They called her Vanessa ‘beeeeee happy’ Saliba on the show. But now she’s left that program and is taking a step up (I’d like to think it’s a step up) into the world of pageants!

Vanessa’s best weapon is the experience she has as a performer/dancer on Wil Time. But she’ll have to train longer and harder to match the walking skills of our best competitors. If she doesn’t win in this pageant, not all is lost because this sweetheart is only 18 years old and with her strong determination to succeed, Vanessa Saliba can only continue to rise.

Click here to see a photo of her at the Talent Show where she did a belly dance!

*****

Bb. #38 Janine A. Asanion

Bb. #38 Janine A. Asanion – 25 yo – Zambales

#38 Janine A. Asanion is a crossover contestant from last year’s Miss Philippines Earth. One of my favorites at the time, Janine made it into the Top 10. She was representing San Marcelino. Now she’s giving Bb. Pilipinas a shot and I think she can enter the semi-finals at the very least.

While I like this licensed nurse from head to toe, she still needs to work on toning her body a bit more. Granted, she’s naturally slim  but I’d love to she some muscle on this babe! But I must say that she’s great on the catwalk and is skilled with her turns and poses.

*****

Bb. #39 Ladylyn Riva

Bb. #39 Ladylyn Riva – 26 yo – Aklan

Ladylyn Riva, our Bb. #39 Ladylyn Riva has been climbing up the pageant ladder entering the semi-finals in Miss Bikini Philippines 2013, placing 2nd in Miss Resorts World Manila 2011 and bagging the Miss Casino Filipino 2013 title.

But can the lady perform just as well in Bb. Pilipinas? It’s her 2nd time to join the pageant after an unsuccessful candidacy in 2011. But how she’s improved since then! She’s far more confident and walks with more aplomb. But she still has 39 other serious rivals for the BB. Pilipinas crowns and it will be a tough battle for her. But she does have a driving force — Ladylyn Riva is competing in memory of her grandmother who recently passed on.

*****

Bb. 40 Vessica Sambo

Bb. 40 Vessica Sambo – 21 yo – Malolos, Bulcan

Vessica is actually an accident. Not the girl but the name! Thanks to someone who misspelled her suposed-to-be name ‘Jessica,’ our candidate #40 is now known as Vessica! But it is no accident that she is in Bb. Pilipnas 2014. With her cat-like eyes, dimpled cheeks and glorious height of 5’10″, Vessica Sambo is destined for the pageant stage!

And her star is rising fast with many observers naming her a favorite newbie. But this IT student is actually not new to pageants. Vessica is the current titleholder of Bb. Bulacan.

From what this blogger saw at the press presentation, she’s got a bikini-worthy body with beautiful long-ish curves and hips that flare out ever-so gently. Viva Vessica!

Ako na ang “Queen of Student Films”!

$

I’ve decided to crown myself as the ‘queen of student films’ since I’ve been busy doing so many of them over the past 2 years! AAHAAHAHAHA!

With Marita Zobel (top) and Tommy Abuel, my co-actors in the student film "Nenita"

With Marita Zobel (top) and Tommy Abuel, my co-actors in the student film “Nenita”

The most recent one I did was called “Nenita” where I played Rosalia, the daughter of Nenita, a widow struggling with the loss of her dearly beloved husband who passed away leaving her all alone in their home. I try to convince her to live with me but she resists, clinging to a past that will never come back.

Nenita is played by none other than veteran actress Marita Zobel nee Blanche who began her career with LVN Studios in the late 50s. Her husband Victoriano is played by FAMAS awardee Tommy Abuel. They made me cry  during the scene when Tommy’s character visits Marita’s in a dream. These two actors are simply amazing. And when they’re off cam, they love to chat and share stories! I had a BLAST!!!

Too bad though that most of these student films can’t be uploaded to Youtube due to certain restrictions set by their colleges so I won’t be able to show you the final product.

Anyway, I’m getting the experience I need to reach my dream of entering mainstream television. I am so desirous of acting in a soap or teleserye and so I’m working my booty off by acting in as many indie and student films as possible that fit my sexy but conservative image. (CHOS! AAAHAHA!)

That’s one reason why I haven’t been blogging as often. When I returned from my US trip in mid-January I was deluged by projects including Oedipus the King (I’m Queen Jocasta while Vince Ferraren is King Oedipus), Ageless Anonymous (an indie film), an anti-aging endorsement which has to remain a secret for now, and a few student films.

Me in 'Ageless Anonymous'. What do you think of the turban?

Me inthe indie film, ‘Ageless Anonymous’. What do you think of the turban?

Anyway, keep me in your prayers. All this hard work has eaten into my rest and blogging time but with your prayers God will help me find time for both.

Most Jag-Worthy Bodies in the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Fashion Show!

$
0
0

Okay, I’ll spit it out. Parang mas mahirap itago ang mga ‘flaws’ pag naka-jeans compared to bikini. What do you think?

While I love and respect all body shapes, a great physique that looks fabulous in jeans, a bikini or a gown means plus points when competing in a pageant. But aside from physique, stage presence is equally, maybe even more important than one’s shape or facial beauty. Don’t forget, being a Bb. goes beyond the body shape!

So I made my top choices with the above in mind:

My Top 3 Jag-Worthy Bodies go to:

#35 Yvethe Santiago, #18 Ellore Noelle Punzalan and #4 Parul Shah.

35. Yvethe Santiago

35. Yvethe Santiago

O mai golay! This is the best I have ever seen of Yvethe Marie Santiago. Loved the hair flip she gave at the start of her catwalk. She was stunning, fierce, wild… lahat na ng adjective for a beautiful wild creature of the jungle, nasa kanya na! Styling was excellent, emotion was brilliant…  and what can I say except that I absolutely hate Yvethe Santiago for being able to fit into those micro-jeans! LOL!

*****

18. Ellore Noelle Punzalan

18. Ellore Noelle Punzalan

The ‘elloring’ Ellore Punzalan gave a cool catwalk in a pair of Jag jeans that seemed inhumanly small. Even more astounding is that she fit perfectly in them! One of the best bodies in the bunch, Ellore is also very studied as a mannequin and knows how to make walking on stilts seem like a breeze. Bravo!

*****

4. Parul Shah

4. Parul Shah

Curvy but with rock-hard abs, Parul Shah is shining brighter than ever! If she was holding back last year when she first joined Bb. Pilipinas (she made it to the semis) this year she’s giving out more of herself. But I’m convinced that this dark beauty from the east is still hiding some extra oomph somewhere in that gorgeous body of hers. When will I see Parul giving 100%? Don’t hold back girl…  your victory depends on it!

*****

MAJOR SPECIAL MENTION:

#21 Raquel Kabigting

21. Raquel Kabigting

21. Racquel Kabigting

Now THIS is how to walk with drama on the catwalk. Racquel Kabigting made me think for a moment that I was watching Fashion Week in Milan! But I found it odd that she was the only one in a swimsuit; I wonder why. I really would like to see her in jeans just like the other girls. Nevertheless, she was visually stunning so I’m giving her Raquel Kabigting a MAJOR special mention here…  her legs deserve it!

*****

My next 7 jean-worthy standouts are:

#1 Julian Aurine Flores, #8 Pia Wurtzbach, #13 Kris Tiffany Janson, #14 Emma Tiglao, #23 Nichole Marie Manalo, #25 MJ Lastimosa and #30 Joy Gangan (yes they are listed in ascending numeric order because I can’t seem to choose whom I like the most among them!)

1. Julian Aurine Flores

1. Julian Aurine Flores

Bb. Pilipinas 2014 opens with the fresh-faced Julian Aurine Flores whom I simply adore. I know it’s difficult being first on stage but Julian has the kind of beauty that sticks to you like an LSS song (minus the irritation, of course, lol!) Built with just the right feminine proportions, Julian Flores topped her walk with a dreamy smile.

*****

8. Pia Wurtzbach

8. Pia Wurtzbach

On ecan never accuse Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach of holding anything BACH! She’s definitely on the prowl for the crown and has all her claws out for the victory. But don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying Pia Wurtzbach is the catty kind. She’s just inherently competitive. If there’s one thing that will propel this girl onto the throne, it would be her fierce attitude which was on full display as she showed off her pair of Jag jeans in the Araneta Coliseum. S-E-X-X-Y!

*****

13. Kris Tiffany Janson

13. Kris Tiffany Janson

Ultra-feminine. All-girl. Zero-testosterone. Kris Tiffany Janson came out in powder-puff blue which suited her aura of pure girly-ness. And if you say there is no such thing as ‘pure girly-ness’ then this girl just invented it! A definite stand-out during the Bb. Pilipinas 2014 Fashion show!

*****

14. Emma Tiglao

14. Emma Tiglao

You can never go wrong with skinny jeans with legs like that! Emma Tiglao continues to capture my attention with her smooth walk and pageant-perfect styling. The cream-colored jeans on her sun-kissed skin made me think of my favorite Venti brewed coffee with half & half!

*****

23. Nichole Marie Manalo

23. Nichole Marie Manalo

For all her sweet looks, Nichole Marie Manalo is a scary rival. Definitely NOT to be underestimated. Could it be that her kind of beauty appeals to a wider base of fans? That her beauty is less divisive than some of the more popular girls? Whatever gives her that extra appeal, all I can say is that I really love her look and her undulating wineglass curves…

*****

25. MJ Lastimosa

25. MJ Lastimosa

Ooooh, yes, lovely choice of Jag wear for the curvy MJ Lastimosa who was greeted by loud cheers from her many fans in the audience. She has become a symbol for many of those who are chasing elusive dreams. This is her third time to join Bb. Pilipinas and her last hurrah. But there is no sign of worry on her brow, just ‘fabulosity’!

*****

30. Joy Gangan

30. Joy Gangan

For me, Joy Gangan has a Mutya Datul vibe going on… she also reminds me occasionally of Jennifer Barrientos. Joy came out with her long-legs, sailing without a bend in her knee and with a smile that seemed to say, “wala lang, happy lang ako!” What I like about this beauty is her flat belly with rounded hips that jut out slightly.

Thoughts on the Bb Pilipinas 2014 National Costumes – Contestants #1 to #5

I was so very happy to hear that this year’s Bb. Pilipinas Fashion Show at the Araneta Coliseum (March 6, 2014)  was going to incorporate the National Costume competition. What a great idea from Team Binibini! I was eager to see the girls parade in Filipiniana of all kinds and dying to see the designs. This is not just about the girls, but about the beauty and significance of their costumes.

My major irritation though is that they failed to mention the designers of these beautiful creations! What would it have cost to include their names somehow during the program? Even to flash the designer’s names on screen would have been enough. What an oversight, in my humble opinion!

Nevertheless, I loved almost all the gowns and costumes and appreciated each one. In this series of blog posts, I’ll go through each costume and share my thoughts… those highlighted in RED are the gowns and girls that impressed me!

1. Julian Aurine Flores

1. Julian Aurine Flores

The pretty Julian Aurine Flores carried this simple carmine Terno with delicate appeal.  The indie music fan never fails to open each Bb. event on a strong note. While I love her when her tresses are down, her exquisite face is not diminished when her hair is pulled back into a bun. Carmine suits her and the the golden Sarimanok design accentuated the gown without overpowering Julian’s presence. A gown you can wear proudly to any formal event!

2. Mary Ainjely Manalo

2. Mary Ainjely Manalo

Another very wearable silvery-white Terno with elegant basket-frame wings that give this creation it’s own uniqueness without going overboard. I must add that this is the best performance I have ever seen from the pert-faced Mary Ainjely Manalo! Good choice of gown which the mountain-climbing beauty presented with gentle grace.  Every now and then, she would remind me of one of my favorite beauty queens, Patti Betita.

3. Joanna Angelica Romero

3. Joanna Angelica Romero

When Joanna Angelica Romero stepped out in this billowing black Mestiza gown, I first thought of Snow White’s evil nemesis – her step-mother, the Witch-Queen, aahaaha! Doesn’t this gown look PERFECT for any wicked woman? But on the contrary,  Joanna Angelica doesn’t have that kontrabida look and is in fact very sweet-looking. Nevertheless, the former varsity basketball player carried this gown with enough edge to look darkly foreboding.

4. Parul Shah

4. Parul Shah

Perfect choice for the dusky Fil-Indian beauty – a costume traditionally worn in the Singkil dance of the Maranaw people from the South. Parul Shah, who is fluent in Hindi, Arabic and Gujarati, had the most stunning costume among the girls who chose Muslim-inspired numbers. She was like liquid gold rolling down the catwalk. A better performance in this year’s fashion show for Parul who is a second-timer in Bb. Pilipinas. Saluté!

5. Hanna Mariz dela Guerra

5. Hanna Mariz dela Guerra

If you look closely at this photo you will see that Hanna Mariz dela Guerra‘s soft beige Terno has a sheer net covering her upper chest up to the bottom of her neck. For me, this gown symbolizes the conservative Filipina who is not flashy and instead captures your heart with her simplicity and elegance. While it must have been difficult for this Ateneo de Manila grad to upstage the glittery costume that came before her, she moved confidently and gave the audience in Araneta Coliseum best smile!

6. Anabel Christine Tia

6. Anabel Christine Tia

Anabel Christine Tia came out on stage as bright at the morning sun in this pretty tribal dress carrying baskets of Filipino veggies. Boy, did this Misamis Occidental lass make me crave for Pinakbet! Now if a vegetable seller came up to me looking like this, I think I would buy all of her produce, as well as the outfit… :)

7. Aiza Faeldonia

7. Aiza Faeldonia

An earthy beauty, Aiza Faeldonia is at her best when she is decked in dramatic wear. There is something about her cheekbones and the way she lowers her eyes that give her a princess-of-the-south aura. Well, she IS from the south – Sultan Kudarat to be specific. This Cher and Cherie Gil look-alike was fabulous in this Muslim-inspired costume but I did not quite like the spear-tip on her crown. It made me think of Katipuneros for some odd reason…

8. Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach

8. Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach

I kept whispering, “beautiful” as Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach walked like a living dream on the stage of Araneta Coliseum. One of best creations of the night, this beige Terno stood out for it’s crisscross stripes and thick but subtle bead work. Very sexy. Very elegent. Very breathtaking. Her loose chignon complimented her look as she left behind her traditional fierceness replacing it with a queenly glow. For ABQ, the former actress turned beauty queen was one of the highlights of the show!

9. Joy Antonette Diaz

9. Joy Antonette Diaz

This modernized Maria Clara gown has a captivating silhouette and needs no glitter to stand out! The American-bred Joy Antonette Diaz who traces her roots to Dagupan was a Joy to watch as she sowly worked the stage. If I were ever invited to the Oscars (dream on girl!) I’d wear something just like this!

10. Shauna Indra Curran

10. Shauna Indra Curran

How appropriate that this half- Igorot lovely would don an Igorot-inspired costume! Shauna Indra Curran‘s other half is Scottish and she is just downright beautiful. Going back to her costume, I’m enamored by the beads she is wearing, and quite like how they look on her ankles. Nice Igorot dance move too with the hands and mincing steps…

11. Laura Victoria Lehmann

11. Laura Victoria Lehmann

Laura Lehmann is lovely is this elegant beige Terno. You can’t see it in this photo but the gown worn by this Psych, Neuro and Spanish Studies student exposes the back almost completely so while it’s traditional in the front, it’s quite sexy from the back…

12. Sarah Jireh Asido

12. Sarah Jireh Asido

This gold-accented fuschia gown worn by Sarah Jireh Asido boasts of interesting layers on the back of the skirt. It looks like something Imelda Marcos would wear. Sarah carried it well and looked ravishingly Filipina as she negotiated the catwalk in the Araneta Coliseum…

13. Kris Tiffany Janson

13. Kris Tiffany Janson

No, she is NOT a porcelain doll. Kris Tiffany Janson is definitely human and one of the prettiest faces to come out of Cebu in recent years. My seatmates and I could not take our eyes off her as she sailed down the stage twirling her parasol from time to time before a fawning audience. I wouldn’t be surprised if this financial analyst wins Best in Long Gown. Oh, I must note that although it isn’t really seen in the photo above, the skirt of her gown is partially sheer offering a subtle outline of her shapely legs…

14. Emma Mary Tiglao

14. Emma Mary Tiglao

Among the young girls in this year’s batch, Emma Mary Tiglao is one of the more stunning ones and is indeed lovely to behold on stage. The 19-year-old animal lover paraded down the catwalk in an eye-catching Terno marked by creeping gold coral and vector 3D designs. The only thing that bothered me was it seemed hard to walk in with it’s huge cardboard-stiff serpentina hem. But looks-wise this is a gown that I would consider a wardrobe investment.

15. Kimverlyn Suiza

15. Kimverlyn Suiza

To my eye, this modern Terno had a distinct French feel, thanks to the leather gloves with exposed fingers and the elegant fold of cloth beneath the bodice spreading out to the sides. This gown is not an easy one to carry but Kimverlyn Suiza looked perfect in it thanks to her classy European look and haute couture moves. Fabulosa!

16. Zahara Mae Soriano

16. Zahara Mae Soriano

Zahara Mae Soriano‘s light pink gown made me think of debutantes, cotton candy and my dog’s adorable tongue, aahaaha! A very elegant piece that I can imagine wearing to the next SONA of the president. Love the silver fern detail on the front and the warm, fuzzy skirt…

17. Diana Arevalo

17. Diana Arevalo

While I love this gown for it’s queenly cut, I find the crown a little too big. It would be appropriate though if Diana Arevalo was on stage to crown a successor or marry a king. One more thing – the gown poofed out ever so slightly in the tummy area (very obvious when viewed from her side) but if the designer can tuck it in, the gown would be perfect!

18. Ellore Noelle Punzalan

18. Ellore Noelle Punzalan

Two things that made Ellore Noelle Punzalan stand out during the National Costume Competition – her sinuous moves and her sexy flat abs. Whatever drama her outfits lacks, Ellore can easily supply! She moved her limbs like an 8-armed goddess and took smooth loping steps to the front of the stage. Loving this girl and expecting bright shiny things to happen to her!

19. Mae Liezel Ramos

19. Mae Liezel Ramos

I didn’t think that the Chinese-looking costume on Mae Liezel Ramos was very ‘national’ until it dawned upon me that a big part of our culture and history is tied to the Chinese who migrated to the Philippines and made this country their home. Hats off to the designer for choosing a Fil-Chinese theme; it is right to honor them. With that said, I found the gown a bit confusing with all the details and my eye was not sure where to look. Also, her shoes were too small; I could see her toes sticking out. But still, a good creation overall that would be a gem to wear on Chinese New Year!

20. Kenneth Santiago

20. Kenneth Santiago

Sometimes all you need to stand out in a crowd is creative simplicity. This monochromatic Terno covered in pleats might seem plain if put on a hanger, but on stage and worn by a beauty like Kenneth Santiago, it delivers the right message. Might I just mention that this former varsity badminton player looked so much like one of my favorite beauty queens – Chiqui Brosas – as she did the Pasarela down the stage!

21. Racquel Kabigting

21. Racquel Kabigting

I had lots of problems with this gown, first and foremost was that Racquel Kabigting had to keep kicking the front part of the extremely stiff hem in order to move forward. Not a practical or safe gown to walk in. But Racquel, you were really amazing because you made it look easy. Secondly, there were too many things going on design-wise so I didn’t really know where to look. But I SOOO get the message of the costume – respect our natural resources, use them wisely and be proud of them. If I’m not mistaken, the main material of this gown is coir…

22. Mary Anne Bianca Guidotti

22. Mary Anne Bianca Guidotti

Mary Anne Bianca Guidotti, a pageant favorite if we are to go by the adoring comments in support of her in various pageant blogs and forums, was demurely understated in a red gown with gold filigree. It is a feel-good gown that made me think of Christmas presents and holiday cheer! How I would love to wear this at a December party in the White House… (only in my dreams, aahaha!)

23. Nichole Marie Manalo

23. Nichole Marie Manalo

The gown worn by government hospital nurse Nichole Marie Manalo is the kind that doesn’t really make a big impression upon first glance, but it GROWS on you. Like moss. And mossy forests is what I thought of with the green hue of the fabric and intricate detailing on gown’s bodice.  In fact she seemed to me like a wood nymph off to attend Oberon and Titiana’s party…

24. Ednornance Agustin

This light henna gown on Davaoeña Ednornance Agustin is something I would expect to see in Fashion Week. While I initially thought that there were too many textures and patterns going on, the thing that pulls this gown together, saving it from confusion is the monochromatic theme. So basically I was thinking NO to this gown at first, but after gazing upon it I realized that it is a striking work of modern art and deserves a YES from this blogger…

Nothing less than a stunning silhouette from MJ Lastimosa who looked like a winner in this baby yellow Terno. Confession: I thought of Ara Arida in her yellow Miss U gown when MJ came out. But I prefer THIS gown that MJ wore, so much more….

26. Hanna Sheena Manuel

26. Hanna Sheena Manuel

In this particular photo, Hanna Sheena Manuel reminded me of former Pitoy Moreno model Crispy Santamaria who was one of Imelda Marcoses’ favorite models. The girl from Tuguegarao  walked daintily, almost shyly, in an emerald Terno looking every inch a Filipina Mestiza. Beautifully simple!

27. Hanna Ruth Sison

27. Hannah Ruth Sison

One of my favorite costumes for the evening was a barong-like dress done in early 1900s style displayed by the effervescent Hannah Ruth Sison. All she needed was a flouncy hat to complete the 1900′s look but… Pinoys are not into dressy hats so never mind, aahaha! Anyway, I really like this pastor’s kid and fear that she is not getting enough attention from the press and pageant fans. So I do hope to God that the judges see what I see in her…

28. Carla Jenina Lizardo

28. Carla Jenina Lizardo

A partly-beaded Terno, white as snow, with a matching abanico – good choice for the porcelain beauty of Carla Jenina Lizardo. The PTV 4 anchor looked like an ice princess, yet the coldness of her costume ended where her warm smile began. And I must add that I loved the serpentina tail of her gown for it’s cut and opacity…

29. Krischelle Halili

29. Krischelle Halili

Could the legendary Sarimanok be the inspiration for this multi-colored gown? That’s what I was thinking when Krischelle Halili took her turn on stage. Loved the hues on the dress and the way it would lead my eye up and down the figure of this wrestling fan. The flurry of what looked like faux feathers on her skirt was also a nice touch.

30. Joy Gangan

30. Joy Gangan

The leggy Joy Marie Gangan, who grew up on an Isabella farm, came out in tribal-wear with a thick train of dark feathers that caressed the stage as she strode down the catwalk. It would have been fun if she were carrying a spear – somehow, the outfit reminded me of hunting. One thing though I noticed is that this pretty face sticks to one kind of smile. Hoping to see a bigger range of emotion on Joy who is a favorite of mine…

31. Angelique Celine de Leon

31. Angelique Celine de Leon

Now this is a dress with PIZAZZ and shows just how much FUN it is in the Philippines!!! Angelique Celine de Leon matched the dress with her own verve as she flitted across the stage. It’s hard to image that Angelique is a hiphop performer because she moved more like a classical dancer during her portion. Apparently, she’s graceful in many different ways!

32. Jeslyn Santos

Gabrielle Erika Tilokani in a delightful Santacruzan-style gown accentuated with a sun crown.  This skilled sign language specialist looked like a statue of saintly woman come alive and was positively radiant with her sweet smile! The gown, meantime, made me think of the purity and devotion of the Filipina.

This gown is actually photogenic, if gowns can be so. I did not like it much when I saw it live on stage in Araneta Coliseum but now, looking at it here, it’s actually got it’s own elegant charm. My problem with it was I thought the ruffles were too big. But just how big should ruffles be? There seems to be no law on this, aahaha! Anyway, Leonalyn de la Cruz, CPA, was looking a diva with her up-do, pale lips and dark, heavy-lidded eyes…

While I preferred her fiery performance during the Jag portion of the Fashion Show, Yvethe Marie Santiago still turned heads as she took the stage in her National Costume – a deep red Terno marked by soft tufts and a pleated bodice. I don’t know what was lacking; maybe I prefer her fierce… maybe I like her better when her hair is down and her styling is younger… not quite sure but I was looking for more and did not find it. Nevertheless, I am keeping my eye on this Daraga, Albay beauty whose name is being whispered among the press as a possible crown winner.
