Right now we are looking at between 25 and 28 contestants. That number could go up to 30 but we won’t know for sure until Wednesday when the list will be officially announced at the Press Presentation to be held at Solaire.

Janicel Lubina - Slimmer's World Miss Bikini Philippines 2013

Janicel Lubina – Slimmer’s World Miss Bikini Philippines 2013

I first heard that Janicel Lubina was planning to attend the screening of Miss World Philippines 2013 as early as the coronation of Mutya ng Pilipinas 2013.  (Janicel was in attendance at Mutya since observing pageants is part of her training). Her handler, Thom Favila approached me in the make-up room and asked what I thought. I said, “Basta, magpaalam kayo sa Slimmer’s World. Get their blessing first before Janicel goes to the screening.”

You see, Janicel Lubina is the reigning Slimmer’s World Miss Bikini Philippines (2013).  But, from what I know, Cory Quirino, National Director for Miss World Philippines, decided to call Slimmer’s World to ask if she could invite Janicel Lubina to the MWP 2013 screening. With a dash of her famous “Cory Magic” she was able to secure the permission of Slimmer’s World.

As a result, Janicel Lubina was able to make the final screening and the news is she passed. Although the news is unofficial, I can vouch for the information since I was one of the judges on the screening panel for MWP this year. Handler Thom Favila also made the announcement on Facebook that Janicel passed screening.

Now here’s where the complication comes in. If janicel Lubina wins Miss World Philippines 2013, she will earn the right to represent the Philippines in the coming Miss World 2013 to be held in Indonesia. Unfortunately, her other international pageant, the Miss Bikini International 2013 (which will be held in China) coincides with Miss World 2013. There is no way she can do both competitions.

So far, an official solution has not been announced since it would be premature to do so. If Janicel doesn’t win Miss World Philippines then there is no problem. But if she does, here is a solution that I think would work well: if Janicel Lubina is the next Miss World Philippines winner, then she should compete in Miss World and Slimmer’s World should get Janicel’s first runner-up to compete in China, in her place. Just my two cents.

So there… I hope this answers all the questions pageant fans have and puts to rest all nasty rumors that have been flying around… IMHO it is to be commended that Slimmer’s World and Miss World Philippines are cooperating for the benefit of contestants and the reputation of the Philippines as a pageant power-house!

Psoriasis Warrior Pammy Velasco Axed from Beauty Queen Reality Show!!!

Pammy Velasco... looking like a queen!

Pammy Velasco… looking like a queen!

If you’ve been following Studio 23′s pageant-cum-reality-show called “Gusto Kong Maging Beauty Queen,” then you know that Pammy Velasco, the poster-girl for Psoriasis, has been booted out. But what was more heartbreaking for me as a guest judge was not her forced departure but her reaction to it. “Okay lang sana kung natanggal ako sa Talent o sa Fitness episode,” she told me between sobs right after our taping, “but I was removed sa Beauty in Truth episode! Eh, nagpakatutoo naman ako. Sobrang masakit, hindi ko matanggap.”

This is how her Beauty in Truth (Q&A) segment ended:

Joyce Burton Titular: Look into my eyes and tell me the truth. what would you choose; to wake up tomorrow to be the winner of Gusto Kong Maging Beauty Queen or to wake up tomorrow and have the most beautiful skin and no more pain?

Ms. Joyce Burton Titular: I salute you with your cause.

Even on the strength of that answer, Pammy was dropped out of the show. The night she was axed, Pammy broke down and would not stop crying. Not because she was removed but because she felt the judges were saying she was a liar.  Being a softie, I was so bothered by her reaction that I took it upon myself to reconnect with her. A few days after her exit from “Gusto Kong Maging Beauty Queen” we had coffee and I got to know Pammy Velasco a little better.

Our coffee date...

Our coffee date…

PSORIASIS WARRIOR

First of all, she is a warrior who has been battling a disease called Psoriasis for 8 of her 21 young years. Many people think its a skin disease but Psoriasis is actually an immune problem with a nasty side-effect: Splotchy, scaly, itchy skin. Thus the confusion.

There are different varieties of Psorias. In Pammy’s case, it manifests as white splotches all over her body much like the common fungal an-an. Psoriasis is not contagious but it is, typically, a lifelong condition.

Pammy Velasco... adorably cute... and truly beautiful!

Pammy Velasco… adorably cute… and truly beautiful!

Pammy says the Psoriasis began when she was only 13 years old. “The day after I joined Miss Intrams sa school, nagising ako with itchy rashes all over my body. Psoriasis na pala yun!” Her life completely changed as she sought treatment and relief as well as social acceptance. Thankfully, her family and her close friends at Laguna College in San Pablo, stood by her side, specially when people would laugh at her or avoid her because of the rashes.

Look carefully at her arm. Pammy says when she is stressed out the rashes come out on her face and can be very red and itchy.

Look carefully at her arm. Pammy says when she is stressed out the rashes come out on her face and can be very red and itchy.

BAWAL ANG PROBLEMA

Pammy says, “Masama sa akin ang ma-depress kasi the rashes get worse. So, iniiwasan kong maging masyadong malungkot. That’s why I said in the Q&A sa show na wala akong malaking problema kasi I have to avoid stress for health reasons.”

But one can only avoid the travails of life for so long. When Pammy was dropped out of the show, she suddenly found herself face to face with depression. “That night hindi ako makauwi. Hindi ko masabi sa Mommy ko na natanggal ako. So I went to my friends in Laguna.” But Pammy didn’t let herself wallow too long in sadness. After finally telling her Mom the bad news, they both came to the conclusion that Pammy was axed because her life was not “ma-drama enough.” And sad to say, there’s some truth to that; these reality shows are all about the drama.

But this is not to put the show down. In fairness to “Gusto Kong Maging Beauty Queen,” the show has its plusses, the biggest one being – it gives non-traditional beauties a chance to shine and share their struggles.  And in Pammy’s case, she was able to raise awareness about Psoriasis. “Wala akong regrets sa pagsali sa “Gusto Kong Maging Beauty Queen.” From the online audition to all the challenges, I gave 101%, kahit minsan feeling ko hindi ko kaya. That’s why I cried so hard because I did my best and yet I was removed.”

Pammy Velasco has no regrets joining Gusto Kong Maging Beauty Queen. She's the contestant in the white gown in this photo.

GUSTO KONG MAGING FLIGHT ATTENDANT!

But is there life after “Gusto Kong Maging Beauty Queen”? Pammy says, “Definitely, yes! Busy ako with photo shoots at may ginawa akong music video for a song called ‘Goodbye Summer’ by Gayuma, a band from Laguna Batangas. Ako yung lead sa video and you can see the trailer on You Tube, just search the title and band.”

Click here to see the trailer but be warned, you won’t see Pammy’s face, just her back.

The most exciting thing now for Pammy is her plan to pursue her dream of working for an airline. “My dream job is to become a Flight Attendant but I know my Psoriasis will be a problem. Gusto kasi nila yung makinis diba? Pero hindi ako natatakot. I will still give it a try. I have an interview with PAL coming up and I’ll tell them that if my skin is a problem, I’m also open to working as a ground attendant or ticketing officer. I really hope I make it!”

And so the next season begins for Pammy Velasco, one of the sweetest souls I’ve ever met. She’s the best thing that happened to me in “Gusto Kong Maging Beauty Queen” and in my heart and mind she will always remain a Beauty In Truth!

Nicole Marable at the Miss World Philippines 2013 screening with no vestiges of the rumored pregnancy…

A few days ago, this blog received this message in the comments section:

Hi guys! Nicole marable was pregnant and due July what happened???? I swear we saw her sa Eastwood. Schoolmates namin sya u.e. we heard she got nose job then pregnant. We did not believe until we saw her so pregnant but now pageant again???? Hindi ba bawal may anak?

I ignored the comment and left it unpublished since this blog doesn’t specialize in rumors, however, respected pageant blogger Norman Norman has come up with what seems like damning evidence showing there could be truth to the rumor. Looking closely at the photo above which was taken on July 29, 2013 , you would never think that Nicole Marable gave birth to a boy named David Clyde Marable sometime end of May or early June 2013 as the claim says.

If the pregnancy and birth are true, then Nicole Marable will have to resign her candidacy in Miss World Philippines and surrender her Miss Makati 2013 crown; she is the city’s current titleholder and won the honor a couple of days before the photo above was taken.

I contacted MWP to inform them about this latest development and at the moment their first concern is the well-being of Nicole Marable. The issue will be looked into today and hopefully an announcement will be made soon.

In Norman’s blog he posts photos of Nicole with what seems like a big baby bump and asks a few tough but very valid questions. Click here to read his post.

Meantime, the Miss World Philippines 2013 contestants are set to check-in to Solaire, their official residence today.

Aia de Leon: Rejected by The Voice?

Singer Aia de Leon (left) and blog author Joyce Burton Titular

I know this is not quite my topic but I am a good friend of Aia de Leon and as far as I’m concerned, she’s an honorary beauty queen and one of the most amazing singers that I know. She was at my wedding and I hope to be at hers one day.

The song ‘Idlip‘ which she wrote was actually inspired by my son Wolf after she found him fast asleep on the sofa inside the DJ’s booth at NU107. At least that’s what she told me.

Come to think of it, this might not be so off-topic after all since all beauty queens and pageant contestants can learn a thing or two from Aia when it comes to facing rejection.

This article can also be seen on my hubby Ron’s project Radio Republic.

Music Fans have been abuzz on Facebook and Twitter all day, shocked with the news that Aia de Leon, the former lead singer of Imago failed to impress judges at the Filipino edition of The Voice. None of the judges – namely Apl De Ap, Sarah Geronimo, Leah Salonga and Bamboo Manalac – turned their chairs to signify a yes vote.

Aia de Leon sang “The Way You Make Me Feel,” a Michael Jackson song which is reportedly one of her personal favorites. But many felt that the song did not bring out the best in Aia’s voice. One disappointed fan of the singer said, “She should have chosen something more emotional with birit. Mas nakaka-impress kasi un.”

Heart of Gold... Aia de Leon at one of my charity events. We were decorating an orphanage in Pasig for Christmas

Heart of Gold… Aia de Leon at one of my charity events. We were decorating an orphanage in Pasig for Christmas

Another observer had this to say, “I think she over-performed the piece, the blind audition levels the playing field for unknown ordinary singers and a big risk and disadvantage to the already-popular singers.”

Meantime, her former band mates in Imago all expressed their dismay. Drummer Zach Lucero posted this on his Facebook: “Sayang.. I think it would be nice if Aia got in..I think she sang well, that Michael Jackson song is a fave of hers, she usually sings that in a slower tempo, oh well..I don’t think the show took anything away from her..if anything it just shows how hard it is to judge a singer based on 1 song.”

The singer herself seems to be unruffled by the setback with this posting on her Facebook Fanpage:

There is a big difference between NON-VICTORY and DEFEAT. Non-victories are challenges you take but did not quite hit the obvious target. It is in these Non-victories that make me realize, respect and salute my unique set of gifts. It is these Non-victories that finally jolt me from the side streets I get lost in, perhaps stuck in, point the north of my own destiny. It is in these trenches that a new sense of bold will forges in my spirit. Allowing me a brand new pursuit armed with an uncensored passion. To truly enjoy and devour music. As it should first and foremost be.

Defeat on the other hand is when you hit the end game button, the power off, the pistol in your head.

When you say- you’re done. An overwhelmed me thanks you for your suppost and love for the time of my non victory. Ironically the sweetest non-victory I ever had. My love to you all.

Remember, even in candy crush: NO ONE STAYS IN ONE PLACE FOR LONG. Unless of course you uninstall the friggin’ Saga. Much much love and gratitude.”

What Aia de Leon will do next is anyone’s guess. But one thing is for sure, if we’re to go by the trending on social media, being rejected by The Voice has only made her more popular than ever. With the spotlight on Aia and public sympathy on her side, now could be a great time to release an album.

Mutya Datul, Miss Supranational Philippines 2013

Mutya Datul, Miss Supranational Philippines 2013 at her send-off!

ABQ had the chance to attend the Bb. Pilipinas send-off party for Mutya Datul at the Gloria Maris Banquet Hall (formerly the Gateway Suites) in Gateway, Cubao. And after seeing Mutya in action at the send-off, I’m convinced that she is going to stun the judges and organizers at the Miss Suprantional 2013 beauty pageant in Minsk, Belarus.

As in!

I don’t know about you, but I think her type of beauty will be ‘ma-benta‘ in Belarus which is right in the middle of the European continent. I think the Europeans will love her, particularly her catwalk abilities which are meteoric to say the least. Another big asset: Her Maria Clara face is beautiful not just from afar but also up-close. Pageant fans in the audience kept saying that Mutya Datul’s type of beauty is pang-Universe, International and World. But right now, her mission is to enjoy the Miss Supranational 2013 beauty pageant and in the process, win the crown for the Philippines!

The Queens in attendance at the send-off included the Bb. PilipinasGold 2013 Court of Beauties – Pia Wurtzbach (1st Runner-up), Cindy Miranda (Tourism), Bea Santiago (International) and Ara Arida (Universe). Also in attendance, Shamcey Supsup (Ms Universe 2011 3rd Runner-up) and Elaine Kay Moll (Miss Supranational Philippines 2012). Elaine is Mutya’s predecessor and successfully placed 4th in Miss Suprantional 2012 in Poland.

A light moment between the queens…

Seeing how close all the current winners are to each other shows that Bb Pilipinas has been very successful at keeping the spirit of camaraderie and support among the queens. Every year, I look forward to the messages from each of them to the queen who is being sent off to her international pageant.

Mutya will need all the advice and words of encouragement she can get because this will be her first trip out of the Philippines. She said that this is actually two answered prayers – to travel abroad and to represent the Philippines in an international pageant! Wow, this trip is like hitting two birds with one stone!!!

Many Filipinos are not aware of the Supranational beauty pageant so here’s a quick background: the Supranational is run by the Panamanian group World Beauty Association but held in Europe since it came into being in 2009. In spite of its newness, the Supranational has attracted some 94 nations this year making it one of the biggest international beauty tilts in the world.

5) Bb. Pilipinas Tourism 2013 Cindy Miranda encourages Mutya (right) at the send-off party.

Last year, the Philippines won the Supranational 3rd Runner-up title after 5’11” stunner Elaine Kay Moll (in photo below) wowed the judges in host nation Poland. Will this year’s representative, Mutya Datul surpass that achievement? This blogger thinks so and believes that Mutya Datul might even win the Supranational 2013 crown!

Last year's Miss Supranational Philippines Elaine Kay Moll gives her message to Mutya.

Last year’s Miss Supranational Philippines Elaine Kay Moll gives her message to Mutya.

Ang concern lang kay Mutya (and I said this before when she competed in Mutya ng Pilipinas and lost) is her communication skills. She struggles with English. However, I agree with what last year’s Miss Supranational Philippines Elaine Kay Moll (in photo above) said to me at the party – Mutya has content! She just struggles with expressing it.

Most true, I say, specially since Mutya was able to handle all the questions from the press but she did answer mostly in Pilipino.

Now it's Mutya Datul's turn to address the guests at her sendoff and answer questions from the Press...

Now it’s Mutya Datul’s turn to address the guests at her sendoff and answer questions from the Press…

Mutya admitted to me that she used to be so afraid of talking in public, She would be so nervous that she wouldn’t hear her own words. But after training under Dale Carnegie and ESSA (Entrepreneurship School of Asia), she’s no longer tongue-tied in front of people. She can now hear herself and organize her thoughts.

Here are more photos of the beauty queens together…

There’s the beautiful Shamcey Supsup at the very left end of the row. She looked soooo slim, maybe even slimmer than her competition weight! But boy she looked awesome and radiated her beauty like the sun. I guess all brides-to-be will glow just like her! She’s tying the knot I hear by year end.

Mutya Datul... prim and proper...

Mutya Datul… prim and proper…

Mutya Datul, who is naturally thin, says that she always thought that being thin was enough to be competitive in a pageant but realized she was wrong.  Trainer-to-the-beauty-queens John Jay Cuay said that she needed to build some muscle and get toned. After working with John in the gym for a few months, she has developed betters abs, toned shoulders and her waistline, which was 23 inches, is now down to 22 inches. Mutya says she is so happy with the results!

Boy would I kill for a 22 inch waistline!

When Mutya Datul spoke to the guests at the send-off party, the very first words out of her mouth were wordsof gratitude to Madame Stella Marquez Araneta for giving her such a wonderful opportunity and for trusting her to represent the Philippines abroad. You could really hear the sincerity in Mutya’s voice as she offered her thanks to SMA.

Some info on Mutya: Full name is Mutya Johanna Datul. This 21-year old beauty hails from Santa Maria, Isabela and is proud to call herself a ‘probinsyana’. Although she comes from a poor family, she is very resourceful and driven. She would join beauty pageants in Isabela (and win most of them) to get extra funds for her schooling and medical expenses of her Mom. Her first national pageant was Mutya ng Pilipinas 2012 where she entered the Top 10. Her second national pageant was Bb. Pilipinas 2013 where she finally struck gold winning the Miss Supranational Philippines title. After she is done with the world of pageants she hopes to enter the world of showbiz and become an actress and celebrity.

Mutya Datul demonstrates her ‘malikot’ na Salagubang Walk

If previous Bb. Pilipinas beauty queens Shamcey Supsup had the Tsunami Walk and Janine Tugonon, the Cobra Walk, Mutya Datul, our Miss Supranational Philippines 2013 has her own signature walk which she has dubbed: The Salagubang (Beetle). Mutya demonstrated the walk in the video below taken during her send-off at the Gloria Maris Banquet Hall (formerly the Gateway Suites) in Gateway Mall, Cubao.

Mutya describes her Salagubang Walk as like flying but with sexy half-pivots. She says that she was inspired to name her walk after the Philippine beetle because they are native to her town, Santa Maria in Isabela. Mutya adds that the Salagubang can be ‘malikot’ specially when you catch them and play with them. And they might look scary but are actually a lot of fun.

I think she should have named it the Salaginto walk since she won during Bb. Pilipinas GOLD! Anywhoo… at the end of her demo, she had the audience clapping and cheering!

But honestly, what do you think? Will Mutya Datul’s walk fly in Miss Supranational 2013 or does it bug the heck out of you?

All opinions are welcome, pro and con and in between, but please deliver them respectfully! Mwaahhhh…

So many pageant fans have pinned their hopes on this beauty from Isabela, Mutya Datul, that she will be the first Filipina to win the Miss Supranational beauty pageant. This year, it will be held on Minsk, Belarus with coronation on September 6, 2013.

Will she win the crown? Read ABQ’s Rappler article on Mutya Datul by clicking HERE.

ABQ had the honor of being on the panel of screening judges and helped select the official candidates of Miss World Philippines 2013 this year. Reigning Miss World Philippines Queenierich Rehman will crown her successor on August 18, 2013 at Solaire. The pageant will be aired in a delayed telecast over GMA 7 on the same day at 10pm.

Pageant followers are going berserk over this year’s edition of Miss World Philippines 2013 with its perfect recipe for a thrilling competition: one favored candidate with four possible challengers right behind her tail, all hungry for the crown. Shades of a Manny Pacquio bout but with an enemy in every corner of the ring.

Megan Lynne Young

Megan Lynne Young

The Favored: Megan Lynn Young – Contestant #20 – 23 yo

After two years of rumors that the actress-celebrity would be competing in a major beauty pageant, the Fil-Am bombshell is finally in the battle. She was supposed to be an official candidate in Bb. Pilipinas 2013 but due to a sexy photo spread, was rejected. Not to be deterred, Megan tried out months later for Miss World Philippines and was welcomed with open arms.

Why should Megan win? She is pageant-ready. You see, the winner of MWP will only have about 2 weeks or so to train for the big event – the Miss World 2013 pageant in Indonesia. She will have to contend with 133 other nations for the international crown so the Philippines NEEDS a pageant-ready winner. And Megan’s got the package. From body to brains, she is all beautiful.

The downside to a Megan victory.

Perhaps we are so star-struck with Megan’s beauty, her being a famous celebrity in the Philippines. But in the eyes of international judges in Indonesia, she won’t have that edge. She’ll be just as unknown as the next contestant. Will she REALLY stand out? To ensure that we’re not blinded by her fame, we should have a sharp panel of judges, mostly foreign dignitaries, who won’t know her from Adam.

With or without that extra gloss of fame, Megan Lynn Young can’t afford to sit pretty counting daisies. She’s got several challengers who can overtake her in a flash.

Janicel Lubina

Janicel Lubina

Challenger #1 -The Cinderella Girl: Janicel Lubina – Contestant #10 – 18 yo

When Julia Morley, wife of the founder of the Miss World beauty pageant (she’s also the Chairman now) visited the Philippines earlier this year, she said that she wanted girls from the poorest regions of the Philippines to have equal opportunity in MWP (Miss World Philippines). She was hoping to see a girl with a Cinderella story and Janicel Lubina fits that picture to a tee.

Janicel grew up impoverished in Puerto Princesa City on the island of Palawan. Her Mom, a kasambahay and her Dad, a gasoline boy could never afford much, only food on the table for her and her siblings. Her tall frame and tanned skin earned her the nickname “tikbalang” among her friends and classmates. But poverty and hurtful names could not stop her from achieving her dreams. The “tikbalang” became a teen queen when she won Mutya ng Palawan last year. She has collected two more titles since then: Miss Scuba Philippines 2012 and Slimmer’s World Miss Bikini Philippines 2013.

Janicel Lubina’s Cinderella story, combined with her stunning bikini-worthy body, captivating catwalk and striking face, makes her a formidable opponent.

The downside? Communication skills. Janicel’s biggest challenge will be interviews with the judges and the Q&A portion. While she is a fast learner and is excellent at memorizing answers, we need a Miss World Philippines who can think on her toes and communicate her message as naturally as possible.

*****

Bianca Paz

Bianca Paz

Challenger #2 – The Insider: Bianca Paz – Contestant #19 – 24 yo

Maria Paula Bianca Paz is a repeater in Miss World Philippines, but she’s not just any repeater. She also happens to be the 3rd Princess (3rd Runner-up) in MWP 2011. As a result, she’s got solid relationships with all the top honchos in the MWP organization and the former queens. When she walked into the screening room, it felt more like a reunion than a scrutiny; everyone was gushing over her ‘new and improved’ figure asking what her diet and exercise regimen were. At the end of her screening she declared, “I’m back to win that crown!”

At age 24, this could very well be her final bid for a national crown. Her first attempt was in 2009 when she joined Bb. Pilipinas. She left the stage unplaced. The year later, she was sent to China to represent the Philippines in the Asian Supermodel search where she garnered the Miss Photogenic special award. In 2011, she tried Bb. Pilipinas one more time, but the organization took her off its list of official candidates without saying why but it is generally believed that Bianca was removed due to a sexy calendar spread. That same year, Bianca was vindicated after joining MWP and placing 3rd Princess.

Now she’s back for that elusive MWP crown but does she deserve it? If she does win, Bianca Paz would be a great representative and needs little or no training at all. From the talk to the walk, this shapely babe should be able to shine in Indonesia.

*****

Patricia Ejercitado

Patricia Ejercitado

Challenger #3 – The Barbie Doll – Patricia Lae Ejercitado – 24 yo

Out of all the challengers (and contestants) Patricia Lae Ejercitado is the most doll-like. She is so near-perfect that you will want to tear off her arm or leg just to see if she’s real. But she is real enough and has been doing the pageant circuit for a few years now. In 2009 she participated in Century Tuna’s Superbods contest and was the People’s Choice winner. In 2010 she made an attempt for a Bb. Pilipinas title but walked off stage unplaced. Her second try in the same pageant in 2012 was more successful; she landed in the Top 12 circle. Now, she’s gunning for the Miss World Philippines 2013 crown but would she be the right choice?

That would be a big YES. After all her pageant experience, this licensed interior designer is ready to compete abroad. She is stunning on stage and gorgeous up close. Aside from her doll-like qualities, her next best asset would be her beautiful mahogany skin, the one thing that marks her as truly Pinay. She also has that competitive South American vibe that would leave her competitors quaking in their heels. And, based on the few Q&A videos of Patricia online, we can trust her to do well enough in interviews. The only thing she would need to improve on is to sound more natural when speaking.

*****

Zahra Bianca Saldua

Zahra Bianca Saldua

Challenger #4 – The Muslim Beauty – Zahra Bianca Saldua – 21 yo

Out of all the pageant newbies in MWP this year, Zahra Saldua is by far, the strongest one. Fresh with a very pretty face, her one big edge is her upbringing as a Muslim. During her audition for MWP, she entered the screening room in her bikini but covered in a sarong. We asked her to remove it but she declined saying that she was Muslim and was uncomfortable with exposing so much skin. Then she explained that she had no plans of joining pageants until she heard that the winner of Miss World Philippines wouldn’t have to wear a bikini when she competes in Miss World 2013 in Indonesia. The pageant removed the bikini contest due to that nation’s conservative Muslim beliefs. This will be the first time that Miss World will not have a swimsuit competition; instead, they will have a Balinese Beach Fabric contest.

Being Muslim, Zahra knows the culture well and should be able to impress Indonesian organizers and judges. If that doesn’t work, she has her sharp communication skills to depend on, being a PTV4 news anchor, a radio jock, courtside reporter, event host and singer.

One more asset? She fits the Miss World theme of “Beauty with a Purpose.” Visit her Facebook and you will see it dotted with posts asking people to help out the foundation she is affiliated with – the Muslim Sisters Bridging Society. The groups is involved in feeding programs for poor children, fund raising for indigent patients in need of surgery and blood donation drives. Zahra herself has donated blood on occasion.

The only downside to a Zahra Saldua election is her inexperience in modeling. Gone are the days when beauty and brains were enough to win a crown. You need a catwalk that leaves skid marks on the ramp and posing skills that can burn the lenses off a camera. The winner of this pageant will only have two weeks to train for Indonesia. So the question is, can Zahra wing it in such a short time?

*****

Other contestants to watch!

There are several girls in MWP 2013 who may pull a fast one on coronation night; lets go through the possibilities.

KC Cajandig

KC Cajandig

#1 Henna Kaizzelle Nicole “KC” Cajandig – 21 yo

KC had one of the most elegant walks in Bb. Pilipinas Gold 2013 where she was a replacement candidate for disqualified contestant. In MWP she still is the best when it comes to walking like a queen. Her past achievements include being a runner-up in Supermodel of the World Philippines 2009 and a candidate in Bb. Pilipinas 2013. This General Santos City native has been modeling since age 13.

This Makati girl is well-spoken and one of the younger contestants in MWP 2013. She joined Bb. Pilipinas 2012 but was unplaced. In July 2013 she competed in Miss Makati and won the title.

Karla Patricia Alas

Karla Patricia Alas

#6 Karla Patricia Alas – 21 yo

This pretty Registered Nurse from Las Pinas was a candidate in this year’s Miss Philippines Earth beauty pageant but she was unplaced. She’s improved since that pageant with a glossier look and sleeker walk.

*****************************************************************************************

Ma. Paula Estenso

Ma. Paula Estenso

#13 Paula Estenso – 21 yo

#18 Omarie Linn Osuna – 20 yo

This business graduate from Columban College is the reigning Bb. Olongapo and one of the prettiest faces in MWP 2013. She is fresh out of her braces and had her cute corkscrew locks straightened for a more competitive look.

*****************************************************************************************

Jennyline Malpaya

Jennyline Malpaya

#21 Jennyline Carla Malpaya – 22 yo

This Ilocana rose is a stand out on stage with her tiny waistline and subtle curves that will make your eyes pop out. Her list of titles is also eye-catching: Saniata Ty Ilocos World 2013, Miss University of the East 2011, La Bulaquena Miss Earth 2011 and Miss Lions Clubs Visayas 2012.

*****************************************************************************************

Ria Rabajante

Ria Rabajante

#23 Ria Rabajante – 23 yo

Ria Rabajante has the hottest catwalk in MWP 2013! Even in Bb. Pilipinas Gold 2013 she sizzled on stage but unfortunately did not place. Many say that this Pasiguena from Albay, Bicol has a strong Miriam Quiambao vibe. Visit her blog at riarabajante.tumblr.com

*****************************************************************************************

Zandra Flores

Zandra Flores

#24 Zandra Flores – 24 yo

Zandra is fresh from a good showing at the Mutya ng Pilipinas 2013 where she entered the Top 10 and won 2 key awards: Press Favorite and Miss Photogenic. She also did battle in Bb. Pilipinas Gold 2012 but unfortunately did not win. One of Zandra’s most interesting achievements is being the model on one of the book covers of teen fiction author Alison Goodman where she portrayed a teenage Samurai warrior.

ABQ’s Best Photos of Megan Young on MWP 2013 Coronation Night!!!

Here is a collection of photos that my husband Ron Titular took during the coronation night of Miss World Philippines 2013. We were all expecting Megan Young to win but that didn’t take the fun out of pageant. She had a few tough challengers but she still captured the hearts of the judges. Congratulations to Megan Young and to the Miss World Philippines organization headed by National Pageant Director Cory Quirino!

Click here to read my Megan article for Rappler. It’s about why she won and her chances of winning at Miss World when she represents the country there in September.

Megan Young during last minute rehearsals before the pageant…

MEGAN’S FALL

This photo of Megan Young was actually taken during last-minute rehearsals at 6:30pm, right before showtime. Megan had actually fallen during rehearsals the day before and had hurt her back. Her heel somehow shot thru one of the joins between the stage’s wood paneling. It happened while she was going down a short flight of stairs. In spite of the fall, Megan reportedly wanted to keep rehearsing but the in-house medical staff at Solaire Resort and Casino told her to rest so she just sat down with an ice pack on her back and watched the rest of practice.

Unfortunately, some people started rumors that it was all pretense but ABQ believes Megan Young is not the type to fake something like this just to get some extra rest. However, such talk can’t be prevented during any competition. It’s all part of the rivalry and actually makes things more interesting, don’t you think?

Megan Young wins her first special award – Best in Fashion Runway

OSMOSIS, BABY!

After the opening number at Miss World Philippines 2013, Megan Young is the first contestant called out to receive a special award – The Best in Fashion Runway.  Megan Young is that rare Filipina beauty who can move between the worlds of showbiz, modelling and beauty pageants. That’s what I call Osmosis, baby!

WHO IS MEGAN YOUNG?

From ABQ Correspodent Ronald Villamor: Megan Lynne Young was born on February 27, 1990 in Alexandria, Virginia,U.S.A. She holds dual citizenship, Filipino-American. She entered local show business via GMA7′s reality show “Starstruck” Season 2 and made it to the Top 6 and eventually became a GMA Artist Center talent.  After Kapuso,  Megan followed her younger sibling, Lauren Young to rival station ABS-CBN 2 and was of Star Magic Circle Batch 13. She was also a celebrity housemate and “The Princess of Charm” in the reality show, ”Pinoy Big Brother: Celebrity Edition 2″. In 2009, she became one of four VJs chosen by Channel (V) during it’s relaunch.

Newly-crowned MISS WORLD Philippines 2013 Megan Young is the second Actress-turned-Beauty Queen since Sharmaine “Ruffa derived from Europa” Rama Gutierrez represented our nation, Philippines in Miss World twenty years ago. Ruffa finished 3rd in that global contest!

As the new Miss World Philippines 2013 titleholder, Megan Young returns to her first home – GMA 7 as the winner of the pageant recieves a one year management contract.

Megan Young looking beachworthy in her sporty FILA Bikini!

BYE-BYE BIKINI!

This stunning photo of Megan was taken by my hubby Ron T. during the swimsuit competition at Miss World Philippines 2013.

What I really like best about Megan Young’s physique is the way her waistline curves in high but gently from the ribcage then suddenly flares out (but not too much) at her hips. Her model-like shoulders add to the overall look. Thanks to trainer John Jay Cuay who helped this girl get pageant-fit.

Unfortunately for bikini fans, they won’t be seeing Megan in a two-piece at the Miss World 2013. The pageant has scrapped the Beach Body competition and instead will have a Best in Sarong contest. The international pageant is being held in conservative Indonesia where the Muslim faith is not tolerant of showing off too much skin. Bye-bye bikini!

ABQ <3 FILA !!!

The swimsuit competition continues with the girls parading in their FILA swimwear. FILA is not really known for sponsoring beauty pageant bikinis so it was a pleasant surprise for ABQ to see our 25 Miss World Philippines 2013 contestants wearing stylish but sporty FILA swimwear. I am a total fan of FILA and love their sneakers but now, I’ll be checking out their swimwear as well! Thanks to FILA boss Butch Albert for being a part of the success of Miss World Philippines 2013!

Megan Young.. elegant in her long gown by Eric delos Santos

MEGAN IN ERIC DELOS SANTOS

I actually had the honor of seeing this gown four days before coronation night when I went to Eric delos Santos’ shop to fit the gown I was going to wear at Miss World Philippines 2013. They were not yet done with the beading and filigree work at the time but they showed it to me and I knew she was going to look like a queen wearing it. I was bursting with excitement to tell someone about the gown but knowing just how important secrecy is, I kept my mouth shut and told no one, not even my hubby, about what I saw.

SONY DSC

Megan Young’s stunning profile

BACK IS BEAUTIFUL!

Even from the back, Megan is indeed a sight to behold. Her profile here shows us why she deserved/deserves to win the Miss World Philippines 2013 crown. I wonder if Eric delos Santos will be dressing her up when she competes in Miss World? My guess is she will most likely wear gowns from different designers. But the most important gown will be the one she wears during the main competition. From what I know, the MWP group will meet and deliberate with their most trusted fashion consultants on what Megan should wear in Indonesia.

SONY DSC

Megan Young (right) with Ria Rabajante in the foreground. Although Ria did not make it into the Top 13, she remains one of my favorite girls…

MEGAN YOUNG: A LOSS FOR BB. PILIPINAS?

Some have commented on this blog that Megan is a big loss for Bb. Pilipinas – the pageant actually turned her away when she screened earlier this year. The reason being a photo spread for Rogue Magazine where she went topless. HOWEVER, nothing delicate was seen because she had her chest covered.  But I tend to agree with others who say that it isn’t really a loss for Bb. Pilipinas because Megan Young fits the Miss World mold perfectly. It’s almost like as if God took out his Miss World cookie-cutter and used that to create her.

SONY DSC

Megan Young picks up more special awards at Miss World Philippines 2013

THE MEGAN YOUNG SHOW?

After the Long Gown Competition, they gave out a third set of special awards and by this time, the audience kept saying #20 (Megan’s number) expecting her to win every special award. I laughed and told my hubby that it looks like this is the Megan Young Show and even Megan herself looked a bit embarrassed at being called back to receive yet another award.

In the third break she got the Miss World Laguna award, Miss Revlon, Miss Figlia, Miss Bench Body and Miss Olay. Her total medal haul was 8 special awards. None of them though were the key awards – Best in Long Gown (Bianca Paz won this), Best in Swimsuit (won by Janicel Lubina) or Miss Photogenic (also won by Janicel). No matter, the important thing is the CROWN.

SONY DSC

A light moment with Megan Young during the final Q&A portion with hosts Carla Abellana (left) and KC Montero (right)…

MEGAN KNEW SHE WAS GOING TO WIN!!!

The First Q&A Session.  During Miss World Philippines 2013, there were two Q&A sessions. During the first one, all Top 13 candidates were asked mostly light-hearted questions. I really loved it that the questions were video questions sent in from people all over the world. Megan’s questions was from Ashra of Hong Kong – “What is your favorite hobby?”

Megan answered: “Well I know I may not look like it but I’m a real avid video gamer… I love playing games.. Im an online gamer. I’m a beauty queen but I love my tech stuff.. so there you go.

NOTICE that Megan said – “I’m a beauty queen,” even if she was still only a Top 13 finalist at this point. One can argue that all contestants who make it into the finals are beauty queens but the purists will say that only the winners with titles can call themselves that. For me, I think that Megan was already thinking like a queen before she won the crown and her answer was a reflection of her thinking.

The Second Q&A Session. The photo above was taken during the 2nd Q&A session AFTER they had chosen the Top 5. This time, the question which was a video questions from last year’s Miss World Wen Xia Yu (of China) was more serious:

“Why do you want to be Miss World Philippines?”

In a slightly tremorous but firm voice, Megan answered, “A Miss World Philippines is selfless, and to be selfless, you need the heart. If I become Miss World Philippines, I will pour my heart and my soul into helping others which is what Miss World is: beauty in giving.”

TOP 5 FINALISTS!

On Sunday, hours before the pageant took place, I posted my Miss World Philippines 2013 predictions and got 4 out of 5 right – My Top 5 were Megan (check), Janicel Lubina (check), Bianca Paz (check), Zahra Bianca Saldua (check) and Patricia Ejercitado. Too bad Pat didn’t make it, although she was in the Top 13. The girl who made it into the Top 5 instead of Pat was Omarie Osuna, an Olongapo beauty queen that I liked as well…

Me with Pat Ejercitado, one of my favorite beauties!

Me with Pat Ejercitado, one of my favorite beauties!

TA-TA FOR NOW, PAT!

I saw Pat afterwards and had some photos taken with her. I asked if she was going to join again but she said it was unlikely because at 24 going on 25 yo, she’s ‘overaged’ or at least is going to be. But she didn’t seem too sad about it just a little wistful. I asked what she was going to do and she said, “I’ll focus on Interior Design.” Perhaps when she’s older she can join one of the Mrs pageants for Moms and wives… i still haven’t given up on this girl!

THE LAST 3 STANDING

After Omarie Osuna was announced 4th Princess and Bianca Paz 3rd Princess, these three beauties above were that last 3 girls standing.

Just a word on Bianca – I’m grateful that she won 3rd Princess and Best in Long Gown which is basically the same awards she won when she joined MWP two years ago. But I am sad that she didn’t achieve what she set out to do and that’s win the MWP 2013 crown.

THE BLUE GIRL OR THE WHITE GIRL?

My guess was that Janicel and Megan would be the last two girls standing. While I am a fan of Janicel (I love her lifestory on how she overcame poverty and is now providing for her brothers and parents), in my heart I know that Megan Young is the rightful queen in this game of thrones.

Finally, the winner is announced and it’s Megan Young! The audience expected her to win but that expectation didn’t dampen their cheering when she was proclaimed Miss World Philippines 2013. Not only was Megan Young the most beautiful an gracious, she was also the best choice, IMHO, in terms of strategy. A marriage between Megan and MWP is far more strategic because she can bring the gloss of her celebrity to the pageant franchise (MWP needs more fame) while MWP can give her that rare and coveted ‘royalty status’ of being a national beauty queen. Theirs is a symbiotic relationship with exponential powers very much like the strategic royal weddings in the old days.

“1000% READY!”

When ABQ/Sash Factor correspondent Raymond Golez interviewed Megan Young after her victory, she told him that she was 1000% ready. (That’s right, there are 3 zeroes there!) Although she was considered a top contender in MWP 2013, she said she didn’t want to put pressure on herself “pero ayaw din naman niya mag-relax lang.” Her victory is somewhat to be a “dream come true” for the “sangkabekihan” or the gay pageant community. (All ABQ can say to that is LOL times 1000%!)

QUEEN OF GAMES

I am pleased that our new queen Megan Young is a gamer. I too am a closet gamer because most people don’t get it when they find out that a 46 year-old beauty queen enjoys computer games, most specially RPGs. In fact, I’m a Final Fantasy fan. But I also enjoy the arcade-type games like Mario and adventure games like Zelda. But I do stay away from the violent formats. I also love word games and puzzles – my phone is packed with game apps that exercise the brain! Hoping that Megan’s love for gaming will show that not all gamers are geeky-looking…

Megan Young flashes a toothy smile at Cory Quirino, Director of Miss World Philippines…

BEAUTY, BRAIN, BODY AND FAME!

Megan Young has the complete package — beauty, body, brains and all the good things that come with fame BUT minus the bad attitude. On the first day of screening at SM Mall of Asia, one of the judges, Mr. World Philippines 2012 Andrew Wolff of the Philippines Volcanoes, brought up her celebrity status. Megan made it clear that she was willing to work as hard as the next girl and did not expect special treatment.

It seems like she lived up to those words, simply because MWP would never let a brattinella, no matter how beautiful, win. After getting to know Cory over the 3 years she has led the MWP franchise, I can see how much she values good character.

TYPHOON MEGAN

While Typhoon Maring was raging outside, Typhoon Megan was storming inside the ballroom of Solaire! Not only did she win the Miss World Philippines 2013 crown, she also took home 8 special awards and gave hope to the thousands of Pinoy beauty pageant fans that we now have a queen who has everything it takes to win the Miss World crown. Our country has never won that international pageant. The closest we have come is First Princess (1st Runner-up) when Evangeline Pascual (1973) and Gwendoline Ruais (2011) competed in their respective years. Ruffa Gutierrez was Second Princess in 1993, twenty years ago, to be exact.

LATE START FOR MWP 2013

Many pageant fans had criticized Miss World Philippines for starting the search so late this year. The winner will only have two weeks to prepare before she flies to represent the Philippines in Miss World. But Cory Quirino said the elections got in the way as well as the search for a new TV station to partner with. But in spite of the late start for MWP 2013, Cory was able to reel in a scintillating batch of contestants this year and with a dash of her famous ‘Cory Magic’ she found Megan Young, a queen worthy of the crown.

THE QUEEN OCCUPIES HER THRONE

I hate to burst anyone’s bubble but I have to admit that I kind of don’t like this throne. Okay, I admit it, I REALLY hate it. But with Megan sitting on it, I’m kind of beginning to like it now. But hoping they scrap the chair next year. It feels too old school.

Megan Young promises to give her heart and soul as she begins her reign as Miss World Philippines 2013

QUEEN OF HEARTS… AND SOUL!

“Why do you want to be Miss World Philippines?”

A Miss World Philippines is selfless, and to be selfless, you need the heart. If I become Miss World Philippines, I will pour my heart and my soul into helping others which is what Miss World is: beauty in giving.” – Megan Young, Miss World Philippines 2013

MEGAN YOUNG WITH MISS YOUNG…

Sorry, I couldn’t help that joke. To those who may not know (and I guess that means most of you) I was Miss YOUNG Philippines in 1981 so that’s one connection I have with Megan YOUNG, vague as it sounds, hahaha! Another connection – when I came up to congratulate her and take photos, she said that she reads my blog. WOW! What a thrill to hear that from our new queen! And third, we’re both wearing Eric delos Santos gowns. :) Love it!

ABQ Author Joyce Burton Titular with Direk Fritz Ynfante at the Anti-Pork Barrel Rally on August 26, 2013 @Luneta, Roxas Blvd, Manila

ABQ had the distinct pleasure of running into Direk Fritz Ynfante at the Anti-Pork rally at Luneta yesterday, Aug 26, 2013. Fritz Ynfante was the director of the tv production of my Bb Pilipinas beauty pageant in 1985. He has retired in recent years but comes out of the woodwork every now and then to do projects.

Right now, he is deeply involved in training our Bb. Pilipinas girls in the art of communication… so naturally, our chat drifted to Mutya Datul who is in the middle of competing in Miss Supranational 2013 in Minsk, Belarus.

The first thing Fritz said about Mutya Datul is that she’s a winner and predicts she’ll win the crown or at least make it into the Top 5. He adds, “Mutya has a perfect face and is so beautiful to look at! It was a pleasure training her because she is humble and really tries her best.”

Direk Fritz has always been sharp at predicting winners. When I chatted with him last year during the send-off of Janine Tugonon to Miss Universe 2012 (he was involved in training her too) he said that her detractors would regret saying that she was just a clapper. And sure enough, Direk was quite right! Janine placed 2nd in Miss Universe last year.

Back to Mutya Datul, Direk Fritz’s only concern about her is her difficulty in expressing herself in English. Thankfully, English isn’t the main language in Belarus so she should do fine. And with Fritz’s training I’m sure Mutya learned more than just a few things about handling questions and speaking in public. In fact, she handled the press quite deftly during her send-off. Click here to read more about that and click here to see a video on her signature “Salagubang” walk.

The Miss Supranational 2013 will be crowned on September 6, 2013! Show your support for Mutya Datul by voting for her here!

Mutya Datul Wins Personality Award at Miss Supranational 2013!

Sa tutoo lang si Mutya (2nd from left) ang pinakamaganda sa apat na special award winners. Diba?

Woke up to some great news! No, not about Napoles’ surrender (although that was a good thing), but about Filipina Mutya Datul winning a special award at the pre-pageant fashion show of Miss Supranational 2013 – she grabbed the Miss Personality sash by a hairline over Miss Myanmar!

I’ve always said that one of Mutya Datul’s greatest strengths is her ability to captivate you while she negotiates the catwalk. There’s this Bayanihan-dancer aura she exudes, an air of hospitality that says, “Welcome, I’m so glad to see you!” Miss Personality certainly fits her…

So while ABQ is overjoyed with the news, we’re not too surprised that Mutya Datul has caught the attention of judges as early as now. She is one of the strongest Pinay queens of 2013. And we hope this special award is a step closer for the Philippines to win the Miss Supranational 2013 Crown which will be given on the evening of Sept. 6, 2013 in Minsk, Belarus.

Three other contestants won special awards alongside Mutya Datul and they are:
Miss Supranational Elegance – Sweden
Miss Supranational Top Model – Moldova
Miss Supranational Photogenic – Puerto Rico

Indonesian Hardliners Step Up Opposition VS Miss World Beauty Pageant

$

Security is going to be a huge concern when the Miss World 2013 beauty pageant kicks off in Indonesia this September.

Just yesterday, a human rights commissioner released a statement saying Indonesia should protect its youth from being “poisoned” by foreign influences.

Commissioner Manegar Nasution of the National Human Rights Commission says, “We should not put women’s bodies on display like a storefront, as if they are nothing but a commercial product.”

This even after the Miss World organization scrapped the Bikini Beauty fast track and instead opted for a traditional sarong competition.

Religious hardliners in Indonesia have been successful at getting events such as Lady Gaga’s 2012 concert cancelled. Will they be successful at forcing Miss World to relocate? It seems unlikely with the pageant starting on September 8, 2013, which is a little over a week from this posting.

ABQ can’t help but worry about the safety of contestants specially our own representative, Miss World Philippines Megan Young.

Oddly enough, bikini-clad tourists are a common sight on Bali where most of the pageant will be held. It has never been a problem with island locals.

With increasing rhetoric from hardliners, Bali police are securing the island and contestants by deploying a thousand officers. Will that be enough to keep everyone safe? Even more worrisome, the coronation on September 28 won’t be held on Bali; it will be held in a venue on the outskirts of Jakarta where hardliners have a strong presence.

But pageant lovers do have one defender. Bali Governor I Made Mangku Pastika has stepped up saying, “organizers have already committed to dropping the bikini contest this year. They have also committed to obeying the ethics, morals and norms here. There is no reason to stop it.”

Governor Pastika adds that he is looking forward to the worldwide tv coverage and tourism boost with contestants and their parties from 131 countries arriving plus over 5,000 journalists who will attend.

My question is this: should international pageants stop holding its contests in nations where the girls’ safety could be compromised?

Megan Young Gets Totally Emo at her Send-off!

Miss World Philippines 2013 Megan Young gets emo at her send-off...

Miss World Philippines 2013 Megan Young gets emo at her send-off…

An emotional Megan Young faced the press this evening at her official send-off party to the Miss World 2013 beauty pageant. What set her off in tears was news about a personal email sent by Julia Morley, founder of Miss World, to local franchise holder Cory Quirino. The email congratulated Cory for “a very lovely Miss World Philippines.” Julia’s note added, “I look forward to seeing her at Miss World.”

When Cory announced this to the press, Megan couldn’t hold back the tears. It took her some 10 minutes to regain her composure but the audience didn’t seem to be disturbed. It was an unexpected, endearing moment and we were all ready for Megan until she was ok to talk.

Di dapat ako umiyak kasi nagpapaka-strong ako,” she blurted out at one point in between apologies for her emotional outburst. “But with a letter from Julia, I’m so encouraged!”

Our Miss World Philippines 2013 arrived a bit late at C2 in Greenhills, the venue of her send-off party. She was delayed due to a doctor’s visit  to treat congestion and a sore throat. The Fil-Am beauty queen is going thru an intensive 2-week training with wardrobe fittings while squeezing in numerous TV shows and the hectic schedule is taking its toll on her health. But in spite of that Megan Young was very loquacious and wouldn’t stop rambling. “Madaldal ako,” she confirmed. “And I’m emo talaga. I don’t care if people say ang arte ko but I have real emotions.”

When asked what was her priority as she trains for Miss World 2013, Megan Young said, “I’ll be upfront with you. I was never really a sporty person but as I grew up I got active. I’m working really hard now on my fitness and focusing on physical strength.” The international beauty pageant, which will be held in September has a Sports Track where the candidates compete in sporty activities. “I am up to the challenge and ready to do pushups and situps!”

Meantime, fans can help Megan win the Multimedia Award by visiting the official Miss World Philippines Facebook and commenting on everything she posts. IT experts from the UK will be judging the Facebook pages of all the contestants and the one they deem the best will be catapulted into the semi-finals. Okay… not that Megan needs the help but lots of followers greeting her online will give her that extra-confidence!

Later in the evening her princesses finally arrived – Zahra Bianca Saldua (2nd Princess) and Janicel Lubina (1st Princess). Unfortunately, Omarie Osuna (4th Princess) who is from Olongapo and not used to Metro Manila got lost and ended up going back home. Bianca Paz (3rd Princess) was at a commitment she couldn’t back out of.

When i finally found time to corner Megan, I asked her more about her not-so-beauty-queen-like hobby of gaming. That interview is coming up in my next post!

Meanwhile, mark this date on your calendar – September 28, 2013! GMA7 will be airing the Miss World 2013 beauty pageant starting at 10pm Manila time. You better be watching because “eto na ‘un!” Typhoon Megan will storm Bali and Jakarta and bring home the first ever Miss World crown for the Philippines!

Miss World 2013 Threatened by Cancellation?

$
0
0

Will Wenxia Yu crown her successor in Indonesia?

The protest against Miss World 2013 in Indonesia heats up with a religious affairs leader calling for its cancellation days before the international pageant kicks off on Sept. 8.

According to this story from Rappler, Minister Suryadharma said, “the Indonesian Ulema Council has expressed strong opposition to Miss World because it doesn’t fit with Islamic teachings that say Muslim women should cover immodest parts of their bodies.”

The official statement comes even after the Miss World organization agreed months ago to scrap the Bikini competition in deference to Islamic faith.

Just yesterday an Indonesian human rights commissioner lambasted the pageant because it “put women’s bodies on display.”

While local organizers have stood their ground saying the pageant will go on as scheduled, ABQ can’t help but ask: Will the protests get louder?

Will the contestants be safe in the middle of such opposition?

And could this be a repeat of Miss World 2002 which was forced to move to London from Nigeria because of Muslims rioting against the pageant?

That rioting was deadly enough to leave an official death count of 215.

Of course, the circumstances were different in Nigeria. Read here to find out more. But Indonesian radicals have, in the past, mustered enough outrage to force the cancellation of events like Lady Gaga’s concert in 2012. The singer is known to wear outlandish and revealing costumes, the kind offensive to Islamic beliefs.

The Philippine representative to Miss World 2013, Megan Young

The Philippine representative to Miss World 2013, Megan Young

AND, inasmuch as I hate to say this, lets not forget the Bali Bombings.

So, right now the biggest concern is the safety of people. If the protests reach dangerous levels, ABQ has a few suggestions:

1) Limit the entire pageant to Bali (which is primarily Hindu) and cancel all Jakarta events. There is a strong har-line presence in the area of the coronation venue which is located in the outskirts of Jakarta.

2) Move the pageant to London like in 2002.

3) OR move it to a nearby pageant-crazy nation like Thailand or… better yet, the Philippines!!!!!

We have seen the leadership of Miss World Philippines Director Cory Quirino and she has political will. MWP was able to organize this year’s pageant in the span of two to three weeks. In spite of the fans’ howl of protest against the lateness of this year’s MWP, complainers are now few with the pageant successfully attracting high-caliber beauties and crowning one of the strongest-ever queens to come out of the Philippines – Megan Young.
So, the Philippines, IMHO, would be the best fallback for Miss World in case things get too hairy in Indonesia.
What do you think?

The Games Megan Plays…

ABQ interviews Megan Young on gaming...

ABQ interviews Megan Young on gaming…

When Megan Young admitted that she was a gamer during the first Q&A round at the Miss World Philippines 2013 beauty pageant, I got really excited. Just like her (and President PNoy) I totally enjoy computer games but don’t talk about it much because when you say you are a gamer, people tend to judge you as childish or irresponsible or outright strange. But the truth is there are many gamers out there who are not childish, completely responsible and quite normal.

I got a chance to ask Megan about her gaming life at her Miss World 2013 send-off at C2 in Greenhills. Here’s the transcript of our chat:

MEGAN: I love that you’re asking something.. so different from the usual questions that I keep answering over and over again. (LAUGHS)

ABQ: I figured you’d say that. Well, thank you for coming out and saying that you are a beauty queen who loves gaming!

MEGAN: I loooove, LOVE gaming!

ABQ: Ok describe yourself… what kind of a gamer are you?

Megan says she's an RPG kind of girl...

Megan says she’s an RPG kind of girl…

MEGAN: I think I’m an RPG-kind-of-girl. I really love RPG (Role-Playing) games but I did grow up with my Super Mario… and… basta ako Mario girl talaga and Pokémon… as in hands down!

ABQ: Did you ever get into the cards of Pokémon?

MEGAN: Yes, I collected the cards I even traded them with my classmates and played the game, the actual game!

ABQ: Any other card games you got into?

MEGAN: It was really Pokemon. I didn’t do Magic (the Gathering). That’s not my type. I’m not uh… I’m not the parang, L.O.L., League of Legends type… that’s not my thing although I did play Ragnarok in High School.

ABQ: Ragnarok. Which is the MMORPG. (Massively multiplayer online role-playing game)

MEGAN: Yes, I was very addicted to that. It came to the point that my Mom got so mad because I wasn’t studying because I was playing my online game and… I had to stop my gaming for a while because of school of course… talagang I stopped gaming because of school.

ABQ: So in games like Ragnarok where you can create your own character and be somebody else… do you pattern your character after yourself? Like do you choose a girl who’s cute? Or do you choose a guy who’s like a warrior or a… you know, what kind of characters do you use?

MEGAN: Well I love the girl characters because they’re really cute. My character in Ragnarok was an assassin, a girl. And I loved poking at the Poring because it was just so cute, even if it was so weak, I would just go at it. (Click here to see what a Poring monster looks like!)

Megan Young enjoys a light moment with her 1st Princess Janicel Lubina (left) and 2nd princess Zahra Bianca Saldua (right)

ABQ: First game you ever played that you can’t forget?

MEGAN: It would have to be Super Mario Brothers. And we had that NES console pa… and I was… so little… oh wait, no no sorry, scratch that, that was my first game console but I can remember when I was in kindergarten we would have a computer class and it was on these old Macintosh computers and they were just… it was our first computer class of course so they were teaching us, “ok this is how you, you know, use a computer.”

MEGAN: And…. there were like these math games and they had like images of like frogs running and you had to choose na parang… if they match and stuff like that. And that was the first game I will never forget because I guess the image just captured me and that’s what drew me to like video games like… like the logic part of it that you could do this or you do that and what would happen if you (made) this decision. It draws me that logic part of video games is what really draws me to it.

ABQ: Your favorite RPG?

MEGAN: Fable! It’s a game on the Xbox. And… it’s set in the medieval times. You choose a character, boy or girl, of course I choose a girl. And the decisions that you make… its something from everyday life… you’re character becomes… good or evil… corrupt or noble…

ABQ: Depending on the choices you make.

MEGAN Yes..

ABQ: What about Final Fantasy, did you like that?

MEGAN Actually, you know what, I’ve never played Final Fantasy! And it sucks because I heard its such a great RPG. But I guess I was just too stuck on the other games. I was playing Fable and Assasin’s Creed at one time and I just couldn’t let go of the two to get into Final Fantasy. I think my brother was the one that played Final Fantasy.

Is being a beauty queen like an RPG for Megan Young

“I’m just setting myself up to be Miss World!”

ABQ: Now that you’re a beauty queen, does it feel like an RPG to you?

MEGAN: (Laughs) Actually you know what? Now that I think about it, it kinda does because there is… I don’t wanna say its a game to me because it’s totally NOT a game. But there’s always strategy and logistics wherever you go and… ok let’s just say that I’m the character and I’m choosing which hairstyle to do, which kind of make-up to do, which outfit will go (with) the occasion. In a way it’s kinda like SIMs. You know, you dress up your character, you make them go thru everyday life with the personality that you choose… with… you know… the job that they choose… the people that they meet, that they want to marry and have kids with you know. Just like that. I’m just setting myself up (to be) Miss World. (laughs)

ABQ: Are you brining any games to Indonesia or are you going to be more focused on getting that crown?

MEGAN: Well I really can’t be without my games so I’m going to bring my IPad with me.

ABQ: What are you playing now?

MEGAN: Um.. there’s this fun game called… “Dumb Ways to Die“… um… there’s “Zombies Ate My Neighbors”… and oh what’s that other game? I forget. But those are the two games that I’ve been playing the most. “Dumb Ways to Die” is so fun, it’s so addicting!

ABQ: I gotta play that. So how do you balance your life as an actress and now a beauty queen with your passion for gaming?

MEGAN: I’m actually kinda sad because I haven’t been able to play my games cause I lost my charger to my IPad so it’s just been running in a corner. So hopefully before I leave for Indonesia I’ll be able to get a charger so I can play my games while I’m waiting.

ABQ: But you are able to balance your life.

MEGAN: Of course, you know, I mean my life isn’t focused just on games. It’s a hobby of mine but… you know, I have to put my priorites straight. It’s… before it would be school, work and then my games. But now you know, its just… sideline nalang. Games, games pag may time.

ABQ: So,are you ready to get that Miss World Crown?

MEGAN: I am definitely 1000% ready for that!

ABQ: Thank you very much, Miss World Philippines 2013 Megan Young!!!
