Why Only One Runner-up at Bb. Pilipinas Gold 2013?

Bb. Pilipinas 2013 winners – L-R Pia Wurtzback (Runner-up), Cindy Miranda (Tourism), Ariella Arida (Universe), Bea Santiago (International) and Mutya Datul (Supranational). IF THERE WAS A 2ND RU, WHO SHOULD IT HAVE BEEN?

When Dawn Zulueta mentioned in one of her spiels that there were 4 Crowns and not just 3 to be given out (Universe, International, Tourism and Supranational – a new title), I went bananas and posted the news on my Facebook and Twitter accounts.

So after that, I was expecting 4 winners and 2 Runners-up to be announced. But when the video regarding the prizes was shown, I realized that there would only be one Runner-up and that the Supranational Philippines crown will get the same prizes as as the Runner-up. In other words, pag-dating sa prizes, magka-level lang ang Runner-up and Supranational winner.

Para sa akin, parang bitin to have just one Runner-up. And bakit mas mababa ang prize level ng Supranational crown sa mga ibang crown? Especially since Supranational (for me) is a bigger pageant than the Tourism Queen International pageant?!!

Anyway, my question for you is this: if there was a 2nd Runner up announced, who would you want it to be?

Imelda Schweighart? Maybe Grace Apuad or Charmaine Elima? Then there’s Rhea Nakpil, Ellore Noelle Punzalan or Camille Nazar? Mariel de Leon? Merry Joyce Respicio or perhaps Parul Shah?

Whom would you prefer and why? Leave your answers in my comments section! Thanks much :)

Queens at the Red Carpet and Backstage at Bb. Pilipinas Gold 2013!

Here are individual shots of the beauty queens that I saw at the Red Carpet cocktails and backstage during the historic Bb. Pilipinas 50th anniversary beauty pageant. There are Queens in photos #4, #5 and #10 that I failed to identify…  I can’t seem to remember their names (senior moment?) If you know them, please leave a comment below.

I just want to take this moment to thank all of you who love and support our Filipina beauty queens. Thanks for the wild applause during the Queens Parade! The final set of queens from the 60s and 70s got the loudest applause but not as loud as the thunderous welcome Gloria Diaz received when she came out!

BTW, this is not a complete collection of Queens who paraded on stage during Bb. Pilipinas Gold but they are the ones that I saw and had the opportunity to photograph that night. The funniest thing was that I was SO busy taking photos of the Queens that I completely forgot to take a photo of myself so I had to ‘borrow’ OPMB Worldwide‘s Red Carpet shot of me.  To OPMB Worldwide, I cropped it so it would fit in my collage format, I hope it’s okay…

Disappointed with Kris TV’s Interview of Janine Tugonon and Boyfriend Jaypee Santos

Two or three days ago my daughter told me about the interview that Miss Universe 2012 1st Runner-up Janine Tugonon had on Kris TV where she casually talked about trouble brewing between her and boyfriend Jaypee Santos. The daughter claimed that the worst part was that Jaypee was there right beside her during the entire interview.

I ignored my baby thinking she was just overreacting. But then a guy friend messaged this to me just now:

i dont like janine anymore. she broke off with her bf and she is kinda happy abt it pa. wats worse is she is making kwento abt this new guy with the ex bf beside her. nanaliligaw yung lead singer ng the script sa kanya. that is so below the belt for a guy. bf mo ako tapos katabi kita you tell the WHOLE world abt this new guy as if i dont exist.

So I decided to have a look at the video myself and this is what I thought:

Shame on Kris TV for taking advantage of Janine and Jaypee. The TV show was obviously prepared to ‘make bulgar‘ the story with photos of Janine and the other guy.

Shame on the hosts  for the way they handled the interview. No value for relationships.

How I wish Janine Tugonon just kept the details to herself. Some things are meant to be private.

Poor Jaypee… to have to stand there and be treated that way.

Here’s the video below but let me warn you, it’s one of the most uncomfortably inane interviews I have ever seen. It broke my heart to see Jaypee trying to smile bravely during the whole thing. :(

Thank you very much to the Slimmers’ World family for inviting me to help judge at the Long Gown competition of Miss Bikini Philippines 2013. I am very proud of how Slimmers’ World has been able to develop its beauty pageant into a respected name. This is the 6th pageant and so far, they have been producing awesome winners like Angelee Claudette delos Reyes (2011) and Abbygale Monderin (2012).

I am so sorely tempted to tell you who my favorite candidates are, but when I’m judging, I keep my thoughts to myself. But what I can tell you is that there are many beauties in this batch that are world-class!

***note: There were 35 contestants but 2 backed-out so certain numbers are skipped, FYI!

I was looking forward to seeing the candidates of this year’s Slimmers’ World Miss Bikini Philippines pageant because they always find bikini-worthy beauties. And I certainly wasn’t disappointed! They had lots of beauties that looked great not just in their bikinis but also in their evening gowns.

Since I was part of the judging committee in the Long Gown Competition, I will refrain from telling you who my favorites are. However, I do have one favorite to win the crown. And I also have four other favorites that I felt stood out among this batch of contestants.

Let’s see if my bets will make it on coronation night, April 25, 2013 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena… 7 pm!

Thanks to Slimmers’ World for inviting me to help judge the Long Gown Competition!!!

Hooray! It’s Miss Philippines Earth season, time to get to know some environmentally-friendly beauties. The Press Presentation of the MPE 2013 contestants was hotter than a Sauna but I braved the sun at the poolside of F1 Hotel at Bonifacio Global City as I clicked away with my camera, taking photos of all the lovelies who paraded before us in their Ricky Abad bikinis.

This is an interesting batch for Miss Earth – so many fresh faces and raw beauties, a few local beauty queens as well as a few polished pageant veterans. Did I see any winners? I definitely did. There are a few girls here that are worthy of the MPE 2013 crown and sash!

Let me show you my best photos of all the 48 candidates of Miss Philippines Earth 2013. Names in red are my TOP favorites, those in green are my next favorites :)

ABQ Picks Top 3 Winners for Darling of the Press Award at Miss Philippines Earth 2013

$

Voting for the most photogenic girl or the darling of the press is one of the hardest things I face as a blogger. What makes is hard is that you usually have about an hour to make your choice. In my early days of blogging, I’d get so confused and just not vote. But things have changed, I’m now sharper and faster when making my choices.

This year at the Miss Philippines Earth 2013 Press Presentation my choices for Darling of the Press were Olongapo, Muntinglupa and Nagcarlan. And all three ended up winning!

Angelee delos Reyes of Olongapo won the Gold, Ferina de Paz of Muntinglupa got Silver and Kimverlyn Suiza of Nagcarlan won Bronze.

Why did I vote for them? Well, let’s start with Kimverlyn Suiza (Nagcarlan). Her beauty is really unique and she stands out in crowd of beautiful women. Also, she sort of resembles Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1989 Sarah Jane Paez whose classic beauty sticks to your mind like a barnacle.

Ferina de Paz (Munitnglupa) was an obvious choice for the press because, as you can see below, she photographs well. But in person she is just as strikingly pretty! I love her feminine appeal and she seems so natural, not stiff at all or fakey-fakey, when walking on stage and smiling at the photogs. This is her second time to join Miss Philippines Earth – her first time was in 2010 but she had to back out of the beauty pageant due to health reasons. If you click here and scroll down to Contestant #29, you’ll see my photo of her when she joined in 2010. Might I say that Ferina de Paz has leveled up? She no longer looks like a sweet baby girl. She’s woooman, hear her roar!

Darling of the Press Gold Medal winner Angelee delos Reyes was my top choice because out of all the contestants she was the most polished and most pageant-ready. If she had to represent the Philippines in any international pageant tomorrow, I would send this girl. Her body is hotter than our weather. Her smile can charm an anaconda. She moves like a tiger. She is charming as a kitten. And what a pretty face! I first met her when she won Slimmer’s World Miss Bikini Philippines 2011 (read my interview with her here). Then I saw  Angelee delos Reyes again at the Bb. Pilipinas 2012 beauty pageant where she was a favorite of mine. She won the Best in Long Gown and finished in the Top 12.

Now I’m left wondering… are these going to be the same three faces we’ll see wearing crowns on the finals of Miss Philippines Earth 2013? Hmmm… let’s see just how sharp we are this year!

Darlings of the Press - Winner - Olongapo (middle), Silver - Muntinglupa (left) and Bronze - Nagcarlan

Introducing: The 18 Contestants in Mrs. Philippines Globe 2013!!!

Yes! Our Mrs pageants are getting glitzier!

The Mrs Philippines Globe organization invited me to the Sofitel Hotel in Manila to meet and greet the 18 contestants they have in this year’s beauty pageant.

One of these women of beauty and substance will be taking over the crown and scepter from last year’s queen, Joyce Agsaway, a wife, Mom and hotelier. Joyce made the Philippines proud when she won the top special award – Face of the Year – at the Mrs Globe pageant last year in California, USA. Click here to see my ‘chika’ date with Joyce Agsaway!

The one thing I love about Mrs Pageants is that the competition is extremely friendly. It seems like becoming wives and moms gives women a deeper sense of value – they value themselves and the things they do more than when they were younger. Many of the contestants in this batch said that they were just happy to be standing in front of the Press folk and being part of Mrs. Philippines Globe 2013 is already a dream come true.

The other thing I love is that these women all have great achievements in their lives as career-women and mothers!

Well, I guess it’s time to meet the 18 moms and wives who comprise Mrs. Philippines Globe Batch 2013! Here they are:

ABQ Tries Out a new Skin Clinic: Dermalosophy in Ortigas Center!

$

Last week was an extremely busy week for the blogging beauty queen so I was feeling tired and my skin was SHOWING IT! But I had one more big event to attend: The KBP Golden Dove Awards. My former co-host Jordan Escusa was a nominee – so I HAD to look good!

Suddenly, I remembered that I had an open invitation from former Mutya ng Pilipinas beauty Jane Umali (2nd Runner-up 1989) to try out Dermalosophy, a skin clinic that she manages. It’s located on the ground floor of the Eton Cyberpod Corinthian on Ortigas. Right across Robinson’s Galleria on Meralco Ave.

So I checked out Dermalosophy and got to meet the lady dermatologist that owns it – Dr. Shae Raymundo. After consulting with her, she suggested a quick facial followed up by a Diamond Peel. The peel would be perfect for 2 reasons: it would brighten up my tired-looking skin and I could put on make-up right after because the peel did not require downtime. Yahoooo!

So here’s the result of my facial and Diamond Peel under the able hands of Dr. Shae Raymundo.

Miss Tourism World Philippines is on it’s 2nd year and it’s exciting to see this pageant grow! For those of you who are not familiar with MTWP, they hold an annual search for beautiful Filipinas who can truly embody the nation’s tourism motto: It’s more fun in the Philippines!

Last year, I had the honor of being a  judge during the pre-pageant and long gown competition. This year, I might be judging again, but this time, on coronation night on May 17, 2013 at the AFP Theatre, Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City. Thewinner of the Miss Tourism World Philippines 2013 title will represent the Philippines in the Miss Tourism World 2013 in Equatorial Guinea in Central South Africa in October 2013.

(How I envy the winner! Going to Equatorial Guinea in Central South Africa sounds like a major, major adventure for any beuaty queen!)

Below are some of last year’s winners:

MTWP 2012 Mindanao Lea Laano (left), MTWP rep to Best Model of the World 2012 Joy Gangan and MTWP Visayas 2012 Elizabeth Alindogan

MTWP 2012 Mindanao Lea Laano (left), MTWP rep to Best Model of the World 2012 Joy Gangan (middle) and MTWP Visayas 2012 Elizabeth Alindogan

Joy Marie Gangan (in the middle above) is the pride and joy of Miss Tourism World Philippines. As last year’s special awardee (she won the Best Model title) she earned the right to represent the Philippines in the Best Model of the World 2012 which was held in Istanbul, Turkey. And Joy Marie Gangan came back home with the Best Asia Model 2012 title besting all the other contestants from same continent.

It was sad though not to see last year’s main winner, Meryl Angeline King. She was reportedly dethroned, albeit quietly. I heard talk from insiders that she broke certain agreements with MTWP when she attempted to join Bb. Pilipinas 2012. Unfortunately for Meryl, she didn’t make it as a candidate in Bb. Pilipinas. If this story is true, I hope Meryl finds her way back into the good graces of MTWP and learns a lessons from it all…

And now, lets take a look at the 32 girls who hope to win the Miss Tourism World Philippines 2013 title:

(Names are not yet complete, there were some last minute changes in the line-up of the girls and it affected their numbering. I’ll complete the names as soon as MTWP sends me the correct list of contestants. Thanks for understanding!)

Ferina de Paz of Muntinglupa says bye-bye again to Miss Philippines Earth…

Just got back home from a fun party night at F1 Hotel in Bonifacio Global City with the contestants of Miss Philippines Earth 2013. (I promise to post photos tomorrow!) Unfortunately, one of my favorite contestants, Ferina de Paz of Muntinglupa was conspicuously absent; some of the girls told me she had some other commitment and couldn’t make it. But someone else whispered to me that she had backed-out. My eyes popped out and I thought, “it can’t be possible. Ferina Paz can’t back out again!”

She had joined Miss Philippines Earth in 2010 (she was contestant #29) but had to give up half-way through, reportedly because of health issues. What was the reason this time?

I tracked down Miss Philippines Earth founder Lorraine Schuck to see if it was true: did Ferina de Paz really back out? Lorraine confirmed the bad news but I said – don’t the girls have to sign a contract that they just can’t back out? Apparently, Ferina de Paz had a valid reason so MPE had to let her go. I tried my best to squeeze out the details from Lorraine but she just said, “I’ll tell you one day, maybe after the pageant is done.”

Hmmm…  I wonder what on EARTH happened to Ferina de Paz?!!! And I chose her as one of my three favorites in the Darling of the Press 2013 voting. I checked out her Facebook and nothing seems to be amiss. Her most current photos are from the Miss Philippines Earth 2013 pageant with not one whisper of her backing out.  I really believed she had a chance at the Top 5 and maybe even winning the crown. I hope she’s alright…

One of the fun things about beauty pageants are the cocktail parties!!! Miss Philippines Earth 2013 just had a “Fun Moments with the Earth” cocktail party at the poolside of the F1 Hotel in Bonifacio Global City. To the lovely Lorraine Schuck, thanks for inviting me! Here are photos taken with my fantastic HTC 8x Windows 8 phone which features a great 8 megapixel camera with an ultra wide-angle lens….

Beautiful contestants in white, gold and silver filled the poolside with their gorgeous figures and welcoming smiles. Here are some of my favorite girls; aren’t they just gorgeous?

When I walked in the first people I saw were Miss Earth founder Lorraine Schuck and Michelle Bautista (Miss Photogenic Mutya ng Pilipinas 1986). They were with the Czech Republic’s Ambassador to the Philippines, His Excellency Josef Rychtar. I quickly congratulated him because the reigning Miss Earth 2012, Tereza Fajksova is from the Czech Republic.

Ambassador Rychtar was wonderful company! He shared a funny story: Some 4 years ago his embassy received a call from the Miss Earth organizers. They needed a translator for the Czech Republic’s contestant that year. The Ambassador offered his services since he spoke Czech as well as Russian. He ended up serving as translator for 14 contestants from his region. The Miss Earth group ended up inviting him to be a judge that year and they have maintained a close relationship ever since!

I was deLIGHTed to find out that the husband of my dear friend Michelle Bautista was the supplier of the gorgeous solar lamps (brand name “TANGLAW”) that were being brandished by all the contestants of Miss Philippines Earth 2013 during the cocktail presentation! Michelle’s hubby, businessman Noel Tanada was busy taking footage of the event. The whole solar lamp thing goes hand in hand with the environmental focus of Miss Philippines’ Earth.

Here are some shots of the Miss Philippines Earth 2013 contestants modeling Tanglaw solar lamps and torches:

Another fantastic surprise was bumping into Mike and Seline Magpayo, the organizers of my pageant – Miss Young Philippines 1981!!! They are like my second mom and dad. Seline looked ravishing while Mike was his old debonair self. The last time I saw them was maybe some 20 years ago so it was a fantastic reunion…

OMG! Seline and Mike Magpayo - they were the organizers of my Miss Young Philippines beauty pageant in 1981... haven't seen them in ages! They look AWESOME!

I also had the opportunity to chat with one of the judges during the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 beauty pageant – Italy’s Ambassador to the Philippines, His Excellency Massimo Roscigno. It turns out that his sexy and gorgeous wife Agnes was my schoolmate at Benedictine Abbey School in Muntinglupa!

Anywhoo… Ambassador Roscigno was the judge who asked Bb. Pilipinas 2013 contestant #34 Grace Apuad what her greatest contribution to her community would be. IMHO, Grace had one of the better answers among the semi-finalists; she said her greatest contribution would be inspiring the youth by modeling her life as an independent woman who finished school even without the help of her parents. The good Ambassador agreed with me that Grace Apuad gave a good answer.

Ambassador Roscigno also shared all these delicious tidbits about what went on during the judging process, however, I am bound by secrecy so I can’t tell you what he said, argh! But the one thing I can tell you is that 3 of the Top 5 in Bb. Pilipinas 2013 were his personal choices. The Ambassador indeed has a keen eye for beauty – he knows how to pick them well, just look at his fabulous wife Agnes!

Another good friend I bumped into was Amelia Joy dela Cruz who is Miss Southeast Asia 1993 (she was also winner of Mutya ng Pilipinas Charm in 1990 and a Bb. Pilipinas 1st Runner-up in the late 80s). Amelia is now a bag designer!

It was a lovely evening indeed with the Miss Philippines Earth 2013 contestant. I also had a blast sharing stories with old and new friends. Hoping you enjoyed some of the things I shared here! Don’t forget, Miss Philippines Earth 2013 coronation night is happening on Sunday, May 19, 2013, 7pm at the SM MOA Arena… see you there!

Mom, the Wind Beneath my Bb. Pilipinas Crown!

Me at age 5 (I think) with my Mom (isn't she just gorgeous). We were on a boat going to Sangley Point...

Toddler-me with my Mom (isn’t she just gorgeous?). We were on a boat going to Sangley Point…

Every time I run into friends who know me from my beauty queen days, they never fail to ask me, “How’s your Mom?”

Mom was my shadow then, but unlike regular shadows, she was feisty and talked a lot; anyone who met her would never forget her. Delia F. Burton is her name and she has been based in Honolulu for the past decade, far, faaar away from me. How I miss her so much!!!

Happy Mother’s Day Mom, I love you forever!!!

I never really wanted to become a beauty queen. That was the last thing on my mind when I was a teenager. I was boyish and walked like the famous movie pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow. Climbing trees and racing with boys was my idea of fun! Even when I got my first period (which depressed me, by the way), I still kept my rough and tough ways. My dream was to work in the world of men and become a top surgeon or an officer in the US Army just like my Dad, Col. Charles V. Burton. I even harbored dreams of becoming an Astronaut.

But Mom, she had other ideas. Somehow she saw showbiz potential in me and made sure to cultivate it by sending me to ballet, hula and modern jazz classes. Although I never got far with dance classes in terms of becoming professional, the classes taught me how to move gracefully so I could automatically switch between my gangly swagger and my graceful walk depending on what the situation called for.

MEETING MY FIRST MOVIE MOGUL: MANAY ICHU OF SAMPAGUITA FILMS

But my foray into showbiz didn’t really start until the early 80s when Sampaguita Films launched a huge campaign in search of actors for the movie Batch ’81. I was barely 13 years old when Mom sent in my photos – one whole body shot and a close-up (styling by Reggie Regalado). Amazingly, we received a callback from Sampaguita Films for an audition!

So we drove to the place which was located near Ortigas Avenue on one of the side streets; it turned out to be this huge piece of property that looked more like a garden or a forest. That’s where I met “Manay Ichu” or Marichu Vera-Perez Maceda, the daughter of Jose “Doc” Perez, owner of Sampaguita Films.

Her first reaction to me: “Oh, you’re really… YOUNG!”

If I remember correctly, this is one of the photos Mom sent to Sampaguita. Styling was by Reggie Regalado.

If I remember correctly, this is one of the photos Mom sent to Sampaguita. Styling was by Reggie Regalado.

I certainly was very young at the time. On the cusp of womanhood. Not ready to surrender my Jackstones and Chinese Garter and yet excited at the prospect of doing things that only the gown-ups did.

The audition turned out to be a disaster, although I don’t think I realized it then. The scene required me to rush down a grand flight of steps (inside the big mansion of Sampaguita Films) and then have a semi-dramatic discussion with my co-auditionee Charlie Ysmael (who eventually became a TV newscaster for RPN9). But I was only 13 or 14, with NO experience in acting whatsoever and no idea about college frats and violent hazing, which the movie Batch ’81 was all about. In the end, Manay Ichu felt that I was… well… too young for the film but she wanted to ‘save’ me for perhaps a future project.

To this day, I maintain that my audition was terrible but Mom… she tells a different story. In her eyes, I was fabulous and beautiful and should have won a Famas Award for it! It was that kind of faith – the one that could see my potential even if others and I couldn’t see it – that eventually propelled me to win Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1985.

But I am rushing ahead of myself. Let me backtrack a bit…

MEETING MOTHER LILY OF REGAL FILMS

After Sampaguita Films, I tried auditioning for Eat Bulaga (I don’t remember what for, but the audition was held at Horseshoe Drive in Quezon City). Nothing came out of that. Mom, who was getting bolder and bolder as the days went by, decided one day to just show up at the house of Mother Lily Monteverde, the famous owner of Regal Films. And guess what! We got an audience with her! Mom’s persistence paid off and it seemed like Mother Lily liked me enough to introduce me to some of the directors and actors in her fold.

After a couple meetings, Mother Lily offered us a 10-film contract starting with, “Bata pa si ‘Sabel,” a coming-of-age movie about a young girl with two boys in her life . But Mom had a major, major problem with it – I had to do kissing scenes and bed scenes; something she did not agree with. Mom stepped on the brakes and the movie went to Snookie Serna who starred across Albert Martinez and the late Joel Alano who tragically died at age 21 because of a heart attack (of all things!)

That girl on the Hammock (Snooky Serna) would've been me if I had signed that Regal Films contract!

Photo above from this site!

But Mother Lily was serious about me. Serious enough to include me in a few press releases and in one of Regal Films’ promotional tours. I was introduced as an up-and-coming Regal Baby. So even if there was a stalemate between Mom and Mother Lily, it looked like my movie career was underway.

Or so I thought.

My ‘career’ took an unexpected twist at the presscon of movie “Blue Jeans” which starred Dina Bonnevie. Mom and I were there on invitation of Mother Lily and after the presentation, one of the press people in attendance told her this, “Your daughter looks more like a beauty queen than an actress, you should bring her to Renee Salud.”

That encounter opened a whole new level of excitement in my Mom who suddenly realized that maybe this was what she was looking for! So she got the phone number of Renee and the following day called to set an appointment…

MEETING MAMA RENEE

The Renee Salud Design shop on E. Rodriguez Blvd was small but busy. Mom and I were quietly asked to sit in the receiving room to wait and meet this “Mama Renee” character. There were two mannequins in the store window wearing Filipiniana-inspired outfits and I could hear sewing machines starting and stopping in the backroom.

After a 15 minute wait, in swept Mama Renee Salud – who turned out to be, indeed, a character. Flamboyant does not even begin to describe him! His hands never stopped moving and neither did his mouth. Renee flipped back and forth between gushing over me and telling me that I needed to lose weight and get a tan. It seemed like he had already taken me into his fold, even before Mom had a chance to say yes.

Funny as it seemed, that meeting proved to be pivotal in my life. Little did I know that stepping into his shop would alter my entire future.

MISS YOUNG PHILIPPINES 1981

Mama Renee did not wait long. In a few months, he sent me on my first pageant experience. I was just 14 years old when I was accepted as one of 10 contestants in the Miss Young Philippines 1981 beauty pageant that was held at the Peninsula Hotel in Makati. And because I was very boyish to the point of brutishness, I did not really know how to mingle with the other contestants and ended up treating them all like boys. I would push them, pull their hair or tease them mercilessly. My behavior (which was innocent playfulness on my part) was misunderstood and resulted in a bull-session the night before coronation.

Basically, they ganged up on me. At least that’s how it felt the time. I felt so hurt by the things they said about me but I hid my feelings and pretended that I was okay. We ended the bull-session with my promise to change. Now that I’m little older, I’ve come to realize that the 9 girls just wanted me to change for the better. They wanted me to become more ‘lady-like’.

Me and my court of beauties - Miss Young Philippines batch 1981!

Me and my court of beauties – Miss Young Philippines batch 1981!

The following night I ended up winning the crown. Honestly, I didn’t know I would win but I did want to win so badly mostly because I am, by nature, very competitive and take all kinds of games, even Patintero, very seriously. So there I was on stage, overjoyed, and at that moment of my victory, I forgot all my promises to change.

In the meantime, my Mom was over the moon! She had been secretly visiting Baclaran Church, praying and walking on her knees til they bled; it was her way of gaining favor with God to make me win. Thankfully, we now both know that the whole ‘penance’ thing was unnecessary; God favors those whom He shall. But I still will never forget the sight of the open wounds on her knees and what they meant to her at the time.

Me with my Mom...

CONFESSION OF A BEAUTY QUEEN #1: I WAS UNDER-AGED

I might as well confess it now and come clean. I WAS under-aged when I won.

The manager of my 1st-Runner up sued and the issue was all over the newspapers. Some reports even said I was stripped of my title but I continued on with my duties as Miss Young Philippines 1981 and went on to represent the Philippines in the Miss Young International 1981 beauty pageant where I placed as a semi-finalist.

My 1st Runner-up Lily Andrews on the left...

My 1st Runner-up Lily Andrews on the left…

Well, I guess now is the best time to say sorry to pageant fans and to all my co-contestants specially my 1st Runner-up Lily Andrews. If I could turn the clock back and do it all over again, I would have not joined and would have waited until I reached the right age.  I realize that now. But its water under the bridge. All I can do is offer this confession and say that I’m sorry.

NEXT STOP: BB PILIPINAS 1985

Mama Renee wasn’t done with me yet. He said that the Miss Young Philippines was just the first step. The main event was the Bb. Pilipinas beauty pageant and the goal was either the Universe or the International title. Training for the Bb. Pilipinas involved doing lots of fashion shows and going to lots of parties. I continued dancing

With Pitoy Moreno Model Lito Gruet. We were the first models of Maria Clara Sangria!

With Pitoy Moreno Model Lito Gruet. We were the first models of Maria Clara Sangria!

(Filipiniana Dance) for the Manila Metropolitan Theater, better known as “The Met” and often worked as a background villager/dancer for Zarzuelas and other musicals presentations at the historical venue. Dancing helped me be graceful and control my severe stage fright.

At one point, I was invited by Pitoy Moreno to become a fashion model for Malacanang Palace. My batch of models included Bessie Badilla, Ana Francisco, Crispy Santamaria (daughter of Pianist Ingrid Santamaria), Roi Vinzon (the actor), Lito Gruet, the late Chat Silayan and Melanie Marquez who was THE favorite of Madame Imelda Marcos.

We basically had one fashion show presentation – it was the guests who changed. Every top foreign dignitary who would visit the Marcoses in the Philippines would be feted with our show. At the end of the program, Imelda Marcos would take the microphone and sing “Feelings” and/or “Dahil Sa ‘Yo” to her guest. The most memorable shows we did were for Indira Gandhi at the PICC and for the foreign actors and directors who came to Philippines for the 1st Manila International Film Fest in 1982. The main show, which was held in Intramuros, was grand and fabulous! The most famous guests to the MIFF that I remember were actors Franco Nero, Ben Kingsley and George Hamilton.

Take note that all throughout my career, Mom was with me. At every rehearsal, show, TV guesting and party, she was by my side, acting like the quintessential stage mom, keeping one eye on her daughter and ten eyes on the wolves. We had an inside joke that Mom was like my bulldog; nobody could get near me when she was around. While I chafed at her constant presence (having her around made it hard to make friends), I knew it was for the best. I was so young and gullible but with my spitfire Mom, no one could mess around with me.

Mom was always by my side! Even in newspaper articles, aahaha!

Mom was always by my side! Even in newspaper articles, aahaha!

RUNNING AWAY FROM HOME AND THE CROWN

When I won Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1985...

When I won Bb. Pilipinas Universe 1985…

When I turned 18, Mom and I had a big fight – she wanted me to put college on hold so I could join Bb. Pilipinas. I tried to bargain – could I finish two years of college and THEN join the pageant? The answer was no. I tried running away from home but Mom found me within days (such was her network) and I was forced to join the pageant. I had no choice but to join it. But even if I was unhappy to be there, I went for the win, giving it my all. As I said, I am competitive by nature and hate to lose. I went home on coronation night with the Bb. Pilipinas 1985 crown on my head and my face splashed on all the newspapers the next day.

My career was made. As far as Mom and Mama Renee were concerned, I had arrived.

CONFESSIONS OF A BEAUTY QUEEN #2: I WAS NOT A FILIPINO CITIZEN

Alas, my second victory proved to be another problematic one! But since there were no complainants, it did not make it into the news. The problem was, I was a US Citizen and the requirement for Miss Universe was that contestants had to be citizens of the country they were representing. I ended up competing in Miami, Florida anyway. Miss Puerto Rico, Deborah Carthy Deu won while my best friend, Miss USA Laura Martinez Herring (who is now a Hollywood actress) entered the Top 10. I do not know if my citizenship affected my chances at the crown but I left the stage broken-hearted, wishing I had done better.

Im on the far right... this was taken during the Miss Universe 1985 competition...

Im on the far right… this was taken during the Miss Universe 1985 competition…

I do have a consolation. A highly respected pageant website included me in their list (made in 2002) of 50 Most Beautiful Non-Finalists in Miss Universe. When I discovered that list, I couldn’t help but smile til my lips met the back of my head. There were people who still cared about me. (Does anyone have the link to that list? Please leave it in the comments section, I can’t seem to find the site…)

CONFESSION OF A BEAUTY QUEEN #3: BITTERNESS AT MOM

A few months after the Miss Universe pageant I rebelled against my parents and left home again. I wanted to lead my life the way I wanted to. And so I did. I escaped from Mom’s authority and enjoyed my freedom but it came at quite a price. My career, which started so well, never really took off and then started to wane.

Here are the reasons why I messed up:

Me w Direk Johnny Manahan who was my director on Chika Chika Chicks! This photo was taken during the rehearsals for the Queens Parade during Bb. Pilipinas Gold!

Me w Direk Johnny Manahan who was my director on Chika Chika Chicks! This photo was taken during the rehearsals for the Queens Parade during Bb. Pilipinas Gold!

First, I didn’t know how to manage myself as a talent. Example – In the 80s, when I got a permanent slot on Chika Chika Chicks (the sitcom that used to be called Chicks to Chicks which also starred beauty queens Lorraine Schuck and Bong Dimayacyac) I would come to work late; like two hours late. My reason? Since the main stars were always late, I could be late too.

The nerve of me, huh?

Second, I made lots of choices based on emotions and not wisdom. I only did what I felt like doing. So instead of investing in my career, I just enjoyed my money, spent time with friends, went to parties and just had a good time, all the time.

Third, I still had trouble getting along with people. And I couldn’t handle criticism from directors and choreographers. I took things too personally and felt defeated by their correction of me even if outside I looked confident. I expected praise because anything less meant I wasn’t good enough. I held myself to an impossible standard at every fashion show or TV job instead of turning them into learning experiences.

All three made a recipe for disaster. While no real disaster happened, NOTHING was happening to my career, which is I guess, some kind of a disaster anyway. My career was going nowhere. I was floating like a jellyfish in a cold ocean with not a single muscle to move me in the right direction. I began to unjustly blame Mom for bringing me into the world of showbiz and grew very bitter.

It took more than 15 years and the preaching of one pastor before I understood how bitterness, and the resulting unforgiveness I had for her, were dragging me down. I forget who the Pastor was, but he was from Victory Christian Fellowship in Pasig. The teaching was centered on the Parable of the Unforgiving Servant in Matthew 18:21-35. He outlined its symptoms and then prescribed the pill of forgiveness. I cried because I suddenly realized that I was a pitiable victim of bitterness.

It was then that I regretted leaving Mom. If I had not left home, my career would have blossomed, for sure! Mom was a such great manager. But God is wonderful because he used the bad that I did and turned it into a lesson for me to learn. I cannot complain with the blessings I have today, in spite of the bad behavior I had in the past.

Mom posing next to her collection my beauty queen photos and memorabilia...

Mom posing next to her collection my beauty queen photos and memorabilia…

So I took action. I sat down with my journal and wrote down two names – my Mom’s and another person whom I just could not forgive. I sat there and prayed saying: “I cannot forgive you on my own strength but I can forgive you through Jesus Christ.”

And then I enumerated the reasons why I was hurt by them and forgave them for each one. I also wrote down a goal: Not to say anything bad about them. In my Mom’s case, I also decided that each time someone asked me about her, I would say at least one good thing about her. I prayed the prayer everyday and stayed faithful to my goal. In a few weeks, I could feel the seed of forgiveness planted in my heart, growing tendrils of peace, giving me life and releasing me from the burden of bitterness.

RECONCILIATION WITH MOM

Although things are not perfect between Mom and I (we still argue and fight sometimes), it is now easy to say, “I love you!” Those words were SO INCREDIBLY hard to say to her during my years of bitterness. In fact, I never said them for a loooong time and neither did Mom. But I clearly remember the first time I said those words again, as an adult – it was in the back of an airport bus that had just picked us up from our plane and was taking us to the Ninoy Aquino International Terminal. A strong feeling of love suddenly gripped me and I just had to lean over and hug her and say, “I love you, Mom!” She hugged me back so tightly saying that she loved me too. My tears would not stop flowing.  At the time, I didn’t know where that feeling came from but now I believe God’s Spirit had something to do with it. That day is definitely up there in my list of “Best Days in My Life.”

Me with Mom, just bumming around on a remote island near Iloilo. We were in town because of a fashion show…

Years after this, I was asked to share my testimony at church and I talked about my old bitterness against Mom. In the middle of that testimony, I blurted this out without thinking: “Mom was right. I was not meant to be a doctor. I was meant to be a beauty queen. Besides, there are so many doctors out there, pero iilan lang ang Bb. Pilipinas winners!”

(To all you wonderful Doctors reading this, please don’t ban me from your clinics, I can’t live without you, aahaha!)

So to my Mom, on Mother’s Day, I am thankful that YOU are my Mom!

Without your pushing and prodding, I would not be enjoying the beauty queen life I have today! So, for all the heartaches I caused you, I ask for your forgiveness…

I was recently asked why I never joined any of the pageants for married women and moms since I still ‘have what it takes’ daw and I suddenly realized that it was because you aren’t here to be the wind beneath my wings. How could I join any pageant without you behind me? It just wouldn’t be the same. I know I am a grown woman but I still look to you for strength. Up to now, you are my Top Model because you are an outrageously crazy, terribly brave, amazingly tough and wonderfully beautiful woman!

Always remember that the crown that I wear truly belongs to you. I love you!

Happy Mother's Day Mom! I love you!!!

My Movie Ticket… Star Trek Into Darkness!

Science Fiction and Out-of-this-World PIZZA! What a rollicking duo :) My husband and I had so much fun at the launch of Pizza Hut’s new Cheeseburger Pizza at the premiere of “Star Trek: Into Darkness”. It was the perfect date for foodies like us who also happen to be TREKKERS!

Thank you to the Gateway Cinema folk and Pizza Hut for the invite!

Ron with the new, delectable Cheeseburger Pizza from Pizza Hut!

Ron with the new, delectable Cheeseburger Pizza from Pizza Hut!

First, a review of the Cheeseburger Pizza from Ron, my Hubby:

Pizza Hut’s new Cheeseburger Pizza is very malaman and very tasty. And I still can’t figure out if it tastes more like  a Cheeseburger or a Pizza. The shape is out-of-this-world – a spangled crust and little burger patties going all around. It sort of looks like a sunstar to me. The good thing is, one or two slices, busog na ako, so I don’t overeat. I had one  slice before entering the theatre to watch Star Trek: Into Darkness and one slice while watching. Just right for my appetite…

And now a review of Star Trek: Into Darkness from ABQ:

I'm a Trekker (not a Trekkie, LOL!)

I’m a Trekker (not a Trekkie, LOL!)

I rarely cry at movies, specially sci-fi ones but this takes the cake (or pizza.) At the peak of the movie (which is the heart-wrenching scene between Capt. Kirk and Spock) I found myself sobbing like a baby. I’ve watched all the Star Trek movies and the Original Series and have a keen sense of Star Trek history and thus the tears. I know Spock, Captain Kirk, Bones, Uhura, Sulu, Chekov, Scotty (even Nurse Chapel and Yeoman Rand) and they’re like family. Knowing the past indeed gives you a better appreciation of the present!

(In case you don’t like crying at the movies, don’t worry, there are lots of crazy fun moments that had me laughing in my seat. But I won’t tell you if it ends happy or sad. You just have find out for yourself!)

For non-Trekkers: Although you don’t HAVE to watch any of the Star Trek movies and original episodes to enjoy the movie, I strongly suggest you try watching the 2nd Star Trek movie, “Wrath of Khan” before watching “Into Darkness”.  You can also watch the 3rd film, “The Search for Spock” for an ever deeper sense of the series. But if that’s not possible, just GO into the darkness and watch the movie!

Live long and prosper!

MISS TOURISM WORLD PHILIPINES 2013 WINNER: AIYANA MIKIEWICZ

Brand-new queen Aiyana Mickiewicz being crowned by last year's Miss Tourism World Philippines, Meryl Angeline King...

Brand-new queen Aiyana Mickiewicz being crowned by last year’s Miss Tourism World Philippines, Meryl Angeline King…

Winning Miss Tourism World Philippines 2013 must be sweet vindication for Aiyana Mikiewicz after a failed bid for a crown in the Bb. Pilipinas 2013 beauty pageant earlier this year. She did not make the cut into Binibini’s Top 15 and neither did she win any special award.

(Correction from reader Ned who dropped me a note in the comments section: “I think Aiyana won Miss Jag at Binibining Pilipinas 2013, though it was awarded to her on a separate event and not during the actual Bb. Pilipinas coronation night.”  He’s right, Aiyana did get recognition from Jag but not during coronation night to the dismay of her fans! Read about it in this post from Norman who authors one of my favorite pageant blogs…)

But Aiyana Mikiewicz didn’t spend too much time licking her wounds; she quickly went on the rebound and  joined the Miss Tourism World Philippines 2013 – a serendipitous move because if Bb. Pilipinas was like night for Aiyana, the Miss Tourism World Philipinas was like day. The 5’6″ mestiza not only won the main crown, she also took off with 5 (yes FIVE) special awards!

Aiyana Mikiewicz was crowned by out-going queen Meryl Angeline King.

Aiyana will now go into intense training for the Miss Tourism World 2013 beauty pageant which will be held in June 2013 (next month already!) October 2013 in Equatorial Guinea, a tiny country along the western coast of Central Africa and the only Spanish-speaking nation in the continent.

The Miss Tourism World Philippines 2013 coronation took place on May 17, 2013 at the AFP Theater in Camp Aguinaldo, Quezon City. It will be rebroadcast on GMA News TV on June 2, 2013 at 10 pm.

The 2nd title went to contestant #29 Sherry Rose Guanga – she won the Bride of the World Philippines 2013 and will carry the Philippines sash in the Bride of the World 2013 beauty pageant in Singapore in September 2013. The Bride of the World franchise is Singaporean and focuses on the beauty and values of the traditional bride. It’s a great platform for wedding gown designers since the contestants compete in white gowns.

Elle Hollman (in Ochre) wins Model fo the World Philippines 2013. Joy Gangan (in black) is the outgoing queen…

The 3rd title, Model of the World, went to one of my favorites – Elle Hollman, a dark Fil-am beauty who had the best catwalk among all the contestants! She replaces Joy Marie Gangan who took home the Best Asia Model award in the Model of the World 2012 held last year in Istanbul, Turkey. Will Elle Hollman be able to match or outdo Joy Gangan’s performance when she competes in Macau this September (2013)? I say her chances are high. Elle moves like she was born for the catwalk – fierce and yet fun!

The Runners-up of Miss Tourism World Philippines 2013 are:

Luzon – #15 Jeriza Saulog (at one point she fell forward on her hands and knees but she got up totally unaffected by the fall. We all clapped for her because she was so calm and collected. A true beauty queen!)

Visayas – #31 Ramona Yamat (a crowd-favorite, this pretty young thing was one of my picks and I was hoping to see her win the Bride of the World Philippines title. I didn’t like her styling though and thought her make-up should have been more natural rather than high-fashion.)

Mindanao – #24 Cristlet Rose Gerona (we saw her first at the Miss Philippines Earth 2012 where she won Miss Photogenic!)

NCR – #16 Czarina Rose Rosales (she was one of my favorites! How I wish she won one of the crowns! But I guess this is not her year. Hoping she joins another pageant or joins MTWP again…)

My choice for the MPE 2013 crown - Olongapo's Angelee delos Reyes

My choice for the MPE 2013 crown – Olongapo’s Angelee delos Reyes

The coronation night of Miss Philippines Earth 2013 is tomorrow night, Sunday May 19, 2013 at the SM Arena next to Mall of Asia and here is my list of favorites:

I only have one girl picked out for the crown – Angelee Claudett delos Reyes of Olongapo, one of the most charming pageant veterans I have ever seen! It was easy to make my choice because out of all the contestants, I find her to be the most polished one. She has already competed in international pageants, always placing in the semi-finals. She is best known as the winner of Slimmer’s World Miss Bikini Philippines 2012; Angelee Claudett delos Reyes also won Best in Long Gown at the Bb. Pilipinas 2012 beauty pageant.

This also happens to be her second shot at the Miss Earth title. She joined in 2009 (Sandra Seifert’s year) where she won Best in Talent.

Angelee Claudett delos Reyes’ International Achievements:

Continental Queen of Asia in the Supermodel International 2012

Miss Internet Popularity and semi-finalist in the Miss Bikini International 2011

There is one girl though who could grab the crown from Angelee Claudett delos Reyes and that happens to be her best friend Kimverlyn Suiza of Nagcarlan (altho I find her official headshot for Miss Philippines Earth 2013 to be horrible. It just didn’t do justice to her Maria Clara type of beauty.)

So, Top 1 is Angelee Claudett delos Reyes of Olongapo.

Top 2 is Kimverlyn Suiza of Nagcarlan

I normally avoid late night partying because I hate cigarette smoke and need my beauty sleep. But I just had to attend Angelee Claudett delos Reyes’ Victory Party at Palladium in New World Hotel Makati to celebrate her winning Miss Philippines Earth 2013. I had so much emotional investment in this Olongapo beauty (she was my main choice for the MPE 2013 crown) so I had to go!

Here are a few photos from the party… Enjoy!
